This according to the Atl Journal Constitution. According to his agent, they are in heavy negoitaions with the Hawks as we speak.
The deal should be completed by the weekend. We have been touting this signing on the site for several weeks. I for one am very happy and think it is a smart move. I will trade a kicker for a pro bowl tight end, any day. Even if he only has a few years in the tank.
What will be interesting to see is how much the deal is for. He was telling other teams 5 mil a year was what he wanted. However, as speculated here, it was the connection to Carlester, Ruskell, Mora, Kerney and probably the success of the Hawks that made the difference. I hope there is a discount involved, or maybe a shorter contract.
The other question is whether or not the Hawks will still look TE in the draft. Smart money is that they will, however it will probably be in a later round. This too is fine with me, as the position seems unusually deep this year.

oh hell yes.
ReplyDeleteExcellent work, Michael. You never cease to amaze us addicts!
ReplyDeleteAdios DJ!
ReplyDeleteSianara FA OL help!
Auf wiedersehen FA depth at DT!
Ciao Josh Brown (not that I care that much)!
Hopefully this thing's under $4M, or we're looking entirely at the draft for plugging holes.
I'm still not excited about this. He's old and injured. At least Pollard was just old and he almost singlehandedly cost us the GB game (the 2 TDs that should have been and the first down drop that killed a drive). Sure, others made mistakes, but he could have kept us in it by making pedestrian catches.
ReplyDeleteI understand the injury concerns, however he has obviously passed at least 3 physicals this week and the Hawks certainly wern't bidding against themselves..
ReplyDeleteand Stallz... Not true. Now that the Samuel deal is in, I bet the Hawks get a long term deal done to free up some money. Also, they already got free agent OL help in Wahle
And this shows once again that we can't believe anything Ruskell says...
ReplyDeleteWhatever it takes to make the Hawks better!
Amen, Mike. I am pretty excited about the Samuel deal, I think this will bring the two sides closer together and we just might see Tru as a Seahawk for years to come. I love it. I am also very excited about Wahle. I am pretty sure the guy can still play, and he has been very durable throughout his career. So far we've managed to bring in Wahle and keep Locklear for less than market value. If they can also bring in Crumpler under market value, I'd consider this an extremely economical off-season so far...not to mention that we've improved the o-line and kept our D intact. I'm just glad we're not signing oft-injured guys like Tommy Kelly to $50 mil deals...good job Raiders, you're headed in the right direction (just a little bit of sarcasm).

I hope the Hawks wont over pay...or this will be a bad move. Im guessing he has 2 good years left but not Pro Bowl years. Then again who knows...
ReplyDeleteSo i guess you have to look at it this way, do you want DJ, Brown or Crumpler...kinda hard to choose.
- Cut Ashworth, and resign Niko. please.
Mike Thanks for your hard work!
ReplyDeleteI think people who believe this means an end to our FA aren't really looking at everything. We have people on our roster who most likely won't be with us next year, that will free up space. We have contracts that we can renegotiate; Shaun. Look at what Ruskell said: he didn't plan on restructuring Shaun's contract, or cutting him. He also said that there was little to no chance we'd sign Crumpler. What do these statements prove, you can't trust Ruskell to be honest, you can trust him to be shrewd. He likes to keep things in house, because it is professional. If they have an opprotunity to get a player they want, they will find the money to sign him. Also, they can say they have no money because of Trufant, even if they plan on freeing up money later. The idea would be to put pressure on Trufant to sign the contract so that we would eventually have even more space.

Check out the footage of Crumpler at nfl.com from 2007.
ReplyDeleteHaven't had a TE that could do this in a while.

Mike,
ReplyDeleteI know you're a busy guy, but perhaps during the "slow time" after the draft when all this stuff is said and done, we/you could take a look at next year's situation and how things will pan out.
I believe we have a few very important players that become free agents after this season.
Here is next years breakdown on the top of my head. Cap room 40 mil, maybe more. Free agents to be....Lofa, Leroy, Rocky, Bobby, Frye, Heller, Morris, and maybe Marcus again. How is that. I will do more detail at some point, but maybe not until next year. I am a one year at time kinda guy, especially since this one has so much significance
ReplyDeleteThanks Mike... I'm worried about retaining Tatupu, Hill, Rocky... etc. There are a lot of good players up for FA next year.

The above link is a PI article regarding Crumpler. It indicates that he has not yet passed his physical (which is to take place today). Any idea what time it will be done?
What do these physicals entail? Will they do xrays and an MRI on his knee to make sure there aren't any lingering internal problems?
Crumpler, 30, followed offseason knee surgery with his second-least productive season (42 catches, 444 yards, 5 touchdowns) of his career.
ReplyDeleteSorry I did not complete the last post. How does Crumpler's 2007 season compare with that of Pollard?
ReplyDeletePollard had 28 receptions for 273 yards and 2 TDs.
ReplyDeleteObviously Crumpler's sounds better (almost double), but it all comes down to cost vs. benefit. I have the feeling we'll be paying him at LEAST double what we paid Pollard.
Of course, we're all getting ahead of ourselves, right? He hasn't signed YET.
Pollard's '07 Stats:
ReplyDelete28 rec, 273 yds, 9.8 avg, 2 TDs

ReplyDeleteAlso, we have to take into account that our WR corps is better than ATLs... so the TE might not get thrown at as much as Alge did in ATL.
