Because I probably won't be able to blog again tonight, unless Verizon works a miracle, here is little parting gift. I am sure this will stir the pot, so keep the comments civil, but I am curious to see what my readers think. Here is the article, Gregg Rosenthal of
rotoworld.com has
Shaun Alexander on the top of his list you soon to be released running backs. Have at it. If you want to know my opinion, it is
here. .
Im thinking the hawks will order him to take a paycut and have him around one more year. Not only is he in denial, he also delusional about his skills and what the team needs of an every down back. As much as I want to see him go, I believe a huge part of last season was shitty line play.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought would be to cut him. Period. My next thought is that we should tell him we don't have the money to keep him and offer him a HUGE paycut, telling him we jsut don't have the funds. If he didn't like that (which he wouldn't because he still thinks he is the best), we could then let him shop himself around and see if he could get anything better.
ReplyDeleteI, like the writer above me, would like to see him cut, but I also know that our line last year had very few holes for any runningback to run through.
Cutting Alexander this season, and designating him a post-June 1st cut results in something between 3 and 4 mil in cap gain for 2008 (and an equal amount of "dead" money in 2009) Frankly I think we can do a lot better than 700 yards and 4 or 5 TDs for 5.x million bucks (his actual salary for 2008)
ReplyDeleteBut what do I know..
We all gotta love the good old times of shawny scoring 2-3 times a game a Sweet Home Alabama playing on full blast throughout the stadium... good times, great oldies...once again just that great oldies...these times are in the past and people began to realize that this year.
ReplyDeleteShawnys good years are behind him and i agree that he has become complacent here in seattle. the only way to get him to try again could be to bring in a new rookie rb and see who ends up on top.
I do think that he is so brain dead that there is no way to convince him to take a paycut...at that point he would try to shop himself and come to the conclusion that we all have already...that he is no more.

Alexander is a waste of roster space and should have been gone two years ago. Cut him an don't shed a tear.
ReplyDeleteApparently the author of that article has never heard of Jerius Norwood. Falcons are the team most in need of back? Yeah right. If the Falcons don't want Norwood anymore then Ruskell should be burning up the phone lines to get him. That's one ex-Falcon I'd love to see in Seahawk blue.
There is no reason in the world SA will be a March cut.
ReplyDeleteHe leaves some intrigue in terms of who the Hawks will take in the draft if he is still on the team.
If he is cut, it will be post June 1. Total cost to the Hawks is about $125,000 (cap hit vs. salary)
according to Clayton, and I think he is closer on this guess than what the Hawks cap room is.
There is no advantage in cutting him now.
Also, if they decide to keep him, after the first frenzy of free agency they will have a good idea of what they can offer him ... and SA will have to look at the money available and take it or leave it.
I hate the Packers!
ReplyDeleteI loved Shawn in '05, dancing in my seat to SHA. I forgave '06 given his injury. I got excited at the Chicago playoff game when he looked good, ran hard, and scored. This year, he's just like a delicate flower. Yes, he had a terrible line but half of the season he looked like he was looking for a place to cop a squat, and then for someone to help him back up.
ReplyDeleteLike a bad marriage you have to know when to file. And the time is now.
Fingers crossed for the draft...
I doubt this team has the courage to cut Shawn this year. I see them keeping him for Holmy's last year and then Ruskell cutting him the next offseason. They will use a highish draft pick on an RB this April though.
ReplyDeleteJune 1st cut all the way!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't think he'll take a pay cut, and there is no way he's worth 5 mil. Draft and cut.
ReplyDeleteInteresting conversation. It's tough to say what the Hawks do with Shaun. I do believe he'll be here til June because of the cap and draft implications, but I don't know. Wondering if Cincy would be interested in trading Shaun for Rudi straight up. I'm not saying the Hawks look to him as the answer, but he can try out and then cut him during training camp, softening the cap hit. I still believe we take a RB in 1st or 2nd round.
ReplyDeleteHere's a FA running back that would work for the Seahawks for relatively cheap.
ReplyDelete6. Mewelde Moore, Vikings - This versatile pro has 4.9 yards-per-carry career average and is excellent in the passing and return game. He can do a little bit of everything, and seems to be a great fit for a West Coast scheme. I'm contractually obligated to mention he went to Tulane.
If the Hawks were to trade Shaun straight up, they loose the ability to spread out the cap hit. That is only for post June 1st cuts, or players labeled that way. Remember teams are now allowed to designate two players as June 1st Cuts, but cut them before that, say, like the day after the draft.
ReplyDeleteJune, 1st cut. No doubt in my mind.
ReplyDeleteThey couldn't even trade Shaun for a 2nd rounder after the 2004 season, and then he ran for 28 TDs in '05. Maybe they should try trading him for a 4th rounder, and when there are no takers, maybe he'll run for 35 TDs next year.
ReplyDeleteIf I understand correctly, cutting SA even after June 1 will only save the Hawks 125k, not even enough for a rookie signing bonus. It makes no sense to cut him THIS year. He gets one last chance, with a revamped line, to get 1,000 yards and average 4 + yards a carry...otherwise he is sure to be cut before the 09 season.
ReplyDeleteHawks are lucky, in that if we sign a good FB, we can split time with Weaver/SA/Mo at RB. This could work out pretty well. And, we have an upcoming draft LOADED with quality RB's. So, we get to draft a good RB (Ruskell is a draft Master), we get to see if SA has anything left in the tank, and we get SA to mentor the newby.
Sounds like a win-win situation.
