A possible suitor? Take a look at Seattle. Shaun Alexander could be cut, Mike Holmgren's going into his final year, and the Seahawks have a history of using poison pills to pursue restricted free agents (i.e. Nate Burleson.)
The first- and third-round pricetag might be prohibitive. The first-round tender might not be. The Seahawks are slotted 25th in the first round. Some think they'd take a running back, like Oregon's Jonathan Stewart, in that spot. Considering that, signing Barber and forking over the 25th pick wouldn't seem crazy.
At first, this seems silly to me. Why give up or 1st pick and a huge deal? However I must say, last year, watching Shaun made me dream of back like Barber. He truly is the anti Shaun. This is as tough a cookie as you can find. I think that a backfield of Barber and Weaver would bring the hardhats back in vogue at Qwest field.
So tell me what you think? Why take a chance that one of the rookie backs (Stewart or Mendenhall) falls? Just go get that position sewed up. I have to admit, from what I have read about Solari, he dreams of backs like this at night, but who knows, at this time of year, its all rumor.

Barber would be a stud in our offense, I'd do it in a second. Going into the offseason, I was thinking how it would be amazing to have him in our backfield, just didn't think it was a possibility. Now that it might be feasible, I hope it's something we explore.
ReplyDeleteHe's only 24. There's little to no risk involved. More risk if you roll the dice and hope you get one of the top 3 RBs in the draft, and who's to say they'll be as effective in the NFL as Barber.
My only concern would be the dollars.
I hate when we give up 1st round draft picks because it makes draft day a bust for a few hours until the 2nd round rolls around BUT!!......I would gladly not see the Seahawks draft in the 1st round if it means we have Barber wearing Seahawk blue! I hope this rumor comes to fruition.

I think I would really, really like this. Though it would make the draft less fun, why should we have to sit there praying one of the Rbs falls to us? And who says they are going to be better than Barber anyway? He would be very, very fun to watch in Seahawk blue.

ReplyDeletewould it be possible to make this a draft day deal? we can wait and see who is on the board and if it is not to our liking we then make the deal for MB3. he has not had all the carries for the boys, so the wear and tear on his body has been limited. that being said a young rookie back is nice on the cap and draft is way more interesting with a first round pick. if getting MB3 means dumping Shaun then do it, any thing not to see him lay down behind the line to avoid hits.

ReplyDeleteI don't think its a great move for the Hawks to do this. It would cost them a lot- draft pick and cap money. If we do this deal, we'll become a cap challenged team the next couple of years and end up sort of like the Ravens and 49ers did. Would it be worth it for a Superbowl? Probably...but nothing else would do.

ReplyDeleteThe Barbarian is great, but he wants BIG BIG money, which the Hawks just dont have. Same with Turner. These guys know they are one injury away from unemployment, they are gonna be sure and lock up the largest contract they can this year.
I think we'll be fine without him, as long as we draft a decent RB and the line blocks. Even SA at his wimpiest can run when theres a hole to run through...and Mo and Weaver are gonna get more carries...they will look better with a new line too.
Its gonna be ok guys, we dont need a star RB next year.

ReplyDeleteI hear what you guys are saying about passing on Barber. I'm usually the last guy that wants to spend big money on a FA RB (or any high-priced FA at that), especially since decent backs seem to be a dime-a-dozen.
ReplyDeleteI think Barber's different though. He changes the entire mindset of an offense. People on the same side of the ball as him want to go to battle for that crazed bastard when he starts running. You think the line would be a bit more inspired when the RB they're blocking for cracks some LB in the helmet and sends him flying to the fake turf? I think so, and I think that's exactly why Hutchinson wanted to leave in the first place. He was sick of blocking for some over-priced prissy RB that was playing for his next big contract. He'd change the entire attitude of our offense, like what Kerney, Lofa, and JP have done to the defense.
Barber's not the same kind of back that we're used to. He's a game changer. The Cowboys offense was different when he was in and JJ was on the bench. I think our offense would be way different with him too, more of an instant impact than anyone in the draft would be able to provide.
I think it is a long shot to get him. If he does end up in Seattle, I would be STOKED!

Mike...can you tell me what picks we have or direct me to a site that breaks down each teams draft order? I doubt the 'Boys would give up Barber for only a first rounder. Seems he has more value than that.
ReplyDeleteWell, mark they signed him to a first round tender. That means that if we want to come and steal him away the Cowboys either match or get a 1st rounder and nothing. It's not a trade it's compensation for us signing a RFA.
ReplyDeletedallas (I mean Jones) really REALLY wants McFadden. They are willing to dump Barber for another 1st round pick so they can trade several picks in order to get thier hands on Mcfadden. They know if they dont move up to at least number 2, the Raiders will take him.
ReplyDeleteThe Cowboys got Barber in the 4th round. With such a deep class of RBs in this draft why couldn't the hawks find a RB of the same ability in the 2nd round and save the 1st round for something else? People have been saying draft has the deepest class of OTs in 25 years, I think it would be better to use the 1st round pick on Walter Jones future replacement when you can get a pro bowl LT so late in the first round this year.

Turner has more explosion, as evidenced by all the long runs he's had in his career. He's very good b/w the tackles but MBIII has no peers in running hard. I don't want to give up money AND picks though. Turner is "FREE" (insert joke about how much he's going to make in FA).
