I posted what I thought was a brilliant topic that at the time didn't garner much discussion. That was before the readership ballooned to its current state. So now with this article from the Sporting News, written by Profootballtalk blogmaster Mike Florio, which states that the CBA appears on the edge of being terminated.
I thought I would post the link to this previous post and see if there was more discussion. So read this here, and then come back to this thread and discuss, but only if you want to.
off topic, but does the live blog thing not work on firefox or something? I can't send anything, and a copy of the image of the chat window flashes about half way up the real chat window and it is absurdly annoying. Soooo...i'm having issues
ReplyDeleteWes, are you
ReplyDeleteusing firefoxs safe mode browser? That could be it
Ending salary cap: good for Seahawks, much worse for NFL.
ReplyDeleteI would hate to see the NFL turn into what baseball has become.
Mike - Is there any way to disable that intermittent "typing noise" that comes from your website? It is mucho annoying. I haven't heard it before today.
ReplyDeleteThanks!

Ending the salary cap is a terrible idea. I love the parity it's established--seeing perennial underdogs like the Browns and Lions suddenly resurgent and dangerous tells me that it's working like it should. The level playing field provided by the cap ensures that even teams owned by tiny organizations like the Packers can compete with teams backed by billionaires with deep pockets Removing the cap effectively allows wealthy owners to buy themselves Super Bowl rings.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that some sort of minimum salary scale should be instituted for rookies chosen through the draft (there's no reason a guy like JaMarcus Russell should land a contract that obscene without ever having played a single snap of pro ball), but I like the cap and hope it's here to stay.
I didnt comment before because I try to ignore the pending train-wreck if no agreement is reached.
ReplyDeleteNo cap would be a freaking disaster. So is a continually increasing cap. This is only good for players. Pretty soon tickets to cheap seats will be $100 each and qb's will make $20 mill a year. Disgusting.
Were I commish, I would install a yearly per player cap as well, probably $5 mill max per player. If the Vets dont like it, they can play in the CFL for less, and the NFL can start over with rookies and no greedy players union.
At some point, there wont be enough people with the money to attend games, and then the NFL will sink like a lead balloon.
Its allready putrid listening to guys explain why they want to hold out when they are under contract for $7 mill a year, telling us they have to "feed thier family". Thats one hungry family that can't live on $7 million bucks!
I gave up on baseball after the last players strike. I dont want to lose NFL too.

Wes-- Were you able to figure it out?? I use firefox and it worked fine for me?
ReplyDeletePauly, it may have been the live blog? that is the only thing I can think that would have changed. I haven't heard the noise
Looks like Crump is not going to Carolina! http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/bucky_brooks/02/22/notes/index.html
ReplyDeleteI concur with the general consensus. Although it MAY be advantageous to the Seahawks in the short term, the long-term ramifications for the NFL would be catastrophic. As other posters have suggested, think about baseball. Every season on Opening Day you already know who will be the major players at season's end. The beauty of Football, on the other hand, is first game of the season is gloriously filled with hope and possibility. ANYTHING can happen in football! And does! (Just look at the Super Bowl!)
ReplyDeletemy feeling is they need to set rookie limits on contracts 3-4 at a by the round limit. 1st round 2 mil., 2nd 1.5 ect. it is ridiculous to pay 60 mil. to someone that ends up sucking swamp water. bozworth! then put a player cap of lets say 7-8 mil. then set the team cap at 125 mil.
ReplyDeleteHow about we go 2 years without a cap and we win a superbowl in that time span and then go back to a cap?
ReplyDeleteJust kidding..sorta.
