Free Agent Rumors Starting

Unfortunately, I don't expect the Hawks to be on anything till at least the weekend, but I thought I would pass on some of the stuff leaking out early

-Asante Samuel may have an agreement with the Saints. He is using Dwight Freeny's 72 million dollar deal w/ 30 in guaranteed as a starting point. Ouch!

-Faneca might have a deal already done with the Jets, it is rumored he is getting 20 mil guaranteed

-The Dolphins are targeting G Justin Smiley

-The Niners are in on Justin Smith, Lance Briggs and Calvin Pace. Which begs the question, can any of those guys keep Alex Smith off his back or run a deep cut in? Did I miss something or did they have one of the worst offenses ever last year? Martz and Deshuan Foster can't add that much.

-Also, supposedly according to the St Pete Times, Crumpler was meeting with the Bucs yesterday. Good news we haven't heard anything yet? Probably, unless it is because his knee is a mess.

  1. I don't know about any of you but I am going crazy not hearing anything from Seattle. I heard from somewhere (i can't remember) that Josh Brown is wanting $400,000 more than what we are offering him. Dont' you think that is greed? As if millions is not enough.

  2. 400k is peanuts, Ruskell is being cheap again just like with the ice fisherman. still, brown isnt the best kicker in the nfl yet, so he shouldnt be paid like he is.

  3. Good point, Josh has not proven that he is the best kicker in the league, so why pay him like he is? He may be a great clutch kicker, but he's sure asking for a lot of money. Last year he showed gratitude for getting the 2 mil for being franchised, now all the sudden he's greedy...well, I suppose it's a bit of his agent's greed that's coming into play as well.

  4. btw - in many cases, Ruskell's cheapness is a good thing. it's better than over-paying for players, don't you think? Our cap would be in crisis if we payed everyone what they demanded. Football is a business, and you have to be economical about it. Look at what happened with Shaun. We threw a ton of money at one player and it didn't work out.

  5. I don't think Ruskell is cheap at all. Not sure where that notion came from. There are a lot of high priced guys on our team. If Ruskell was cheap then we wouldn't have the players we have.

  6. I think the person who used the word "cheap" (I am not that person), really meant something to the means of frugal/thrifty. The point was that you have to negotiate with players, because if you just give them what they want we would only have like 10 players.

  7. Wait a minute. I saw that the Redskins were interested in Hackett... Michael, I thought the Redskins were one of the teams that were almost or over the cap for this year?

  8. There is an article from the Washington Post that states that the Redskins have cleared around 6 mil in cap room by restructuring some contracts. They had to to that - they were OVER the cap previously.

I sill hope DJ stays. There are some good WRs out there besides him including: Stallworth, Berrian, and others. Maybe that will help us retain his services.

Mel Kiper has Mendenhall sliding to us in the first round after Arizona nabs J.Stewart a few picks earlier. He must be crazy.

  9. TNT is reporting that kevin bentley wont be back this year, he wants a chance to start and being behind lofa, JP, and leroy hill, he feels he wont be able to. I wish he would stay as he has been a very serviceable 4th backer and special teamer. My question is who fills that roll now, Niko or someone else?

  10. Misfit-

For our sake I hope Kiper isn't crazy and he does fall to us. He looks like he'll be a great back,
especially if he's wearing seahawk blue and green

  11. The Bears are going to take Mendenhall or Stewart, so by the time the hawks draft we'll have to settle for someone else. I'm beginning to think they should draft a big DT or OL or a CB in the first round, as the draft is loaded with rb's and TE's in the second and third rounds.

Ruskell is usually thrifty, he occasionally spends huge money when not necessary (Branch, SA, etc), and he has been known to be cheap-ass stingy (ice fisherman, Hamlin, Hackett, Brown, etc).

I sure hope his moves are the right ones this year...

  12. Ruskell did not want to give Shaun Alexander a contract, he was forced to. Bentley can easily start in Narleans and will do well. I see us spending 4rd pick on a LB because of JPs age and next year Hill and Lofa Tatupu are free agents. Kiper is a nutsack by the way, but if and big if that is, he is correct and we land one of the top 3 backs, oh sweet mama!

  13. Speaking of greed, here is a link to a more significant problem, one that is within the NFC west. I didn't know Fitzgerald's contract was going to be this huge:

Imagine having to work around a contract that size!

Contracts are the reason why its good to have a Gm separate from the Coach. That way HOlmgren isn't at all blamed for someone's contract issue.

As for LB, I think there is a young guy who can step up into Bentley's role....Perhaps Lawry or Herring?
