Hackett Wants to be a Hawk

According to Adam Kaplan,Sirius NFL Radio peronality, in an interview he did with Doug Farrar or Seahawks.net and Football Outsiders, DJ Hackett's preference is to remain with the Hawks. His requirements for any team to sign him are that they are a winning organization and stability at quarterback. The Hawks would like him back too, they are just short on cap space and thus weary of overpaying a guy like Hack, who may, or may not, get a huge offer. Kaplan says that once the market is established, if the Hawks come within 10% of his best offer, there is a good chance he will return.

Clearly Hackett could be a Pro Bowler if he ever played a full season. Last year he actually had a serious injury. It is the years past that would worry me, when it seemed as if minor injuries took him out for substantial amounts of time. Also, no one will ever accuse DJ of being a quick healer. Lets see what he market bares.

  1. It'd be nice to have him, but at what cost?
It's so tough b/c there's always various injuries to worry about with him.

  2. I hope we dont lose him...Just think if he was able to stay healthy for a season?..Which could happen!..He would be well over a 1000 yards and close to 100 receptions...I really hope we find a way to keep him

  3. Man, it would suck to lose D.J....He is clutch and one of my favorite receivers....when healthy.

  4. My biggest concern is that DJ Hackett may be another DJack in the making when it comes to 'injuries'. The kid simply will not play hurt.

Back in his 2nd year with the team while fighting with Urban for the fifth and final WR spot on the roster Hackett sat out the entire 2nd half of training camp which led Homgren to make the comment 'the kid needs to learn the difference between being hurt and being injured'. Not exactly what you want to hear from the head coach when you are an un-proven young player.

He has all the talent in the world but does he have that 'it' factor that defines a great WR? Someone like Jerry Rice who, even as a 10 year vet, perenial pro-bowler, and sure bet hall of famer, still had the work ethic and the desire to play that would put everyone else to shame.

  5. I really hope he signs a 1 year deal --- just to prove to everyone that he can stay healthy and put up big numbers. Then our young WRs will be a year older (and Branch will be back) and it will not be as big of a deal if we lose him next off season.

  6. And we want Hackett to be a Hawk.

  7. Last year was the first year Hackett had a serious injury, and while he did miss time in each of the two previous years, let's remember that he was not counted on all that much in those two years (playing behind the likes of Juravicius, Jackson, Branch, Engram and the Burleson experiment was in full swing last year) allowing him to fully rest his injuries.

He is not becoming anything near D. Jackson. Jackson had a knee problem that he/the team never let heal when it was injured, then when they did the surgery rushed him back too fast and that was the beginning of the end.

How hard is it to give a cap friendly bonus and an incentive-ladden contract? The guy plays at pro bowl level when he is on the field. Ruskell should be able to make this happen - and the team needs it to happen. I keep seeing posts that talk about when Branch comes back next year. He will not be back next year. Most likely he does not even take the field, but if he does he will be limited (well, maybe not ... receivers don't really use their knees that much anyway). Without Hackett this team is looking at Burleson, Engram and Obamanu ... and that is if none of them get injured. The Seahawks need to cut Ashworth, restructure deals, whatever they need to do to make sure Hackett stays in the fold.

  8. Hackett was inactive the first 7 games of 2004, his rookie season, before being placed on IR on Nov 5th due to a hip injury. Played in 13 games in 2005, starting 3. Played in all 3 post season games but did not make a catch. Played in 14 games in 2006 with 5 starts, finished 3rd on the team with 45 catches and 2nd with 4 TD's. Injured ankle in WC game vs. Dallas and inactive in Div Playoff vs. Chicago. Missed 10 games in 2007 with high ankle sprain, weeks 2-7, 13-15. Played in both playoff games, great game in WC, non-existent in Div Playoff at Green Bay. Great talent but can't be counted on to be on the field. 1 yr contract if he accepts it, adios if he doesn't.

  9. Hog Heaven is acting as if it is a forgone conclusion that they will sign DJ Hackett. The Skins will defintely overpay and not think twice.

  11. I dont think that Zorn has an advantage bringing "his" guys over just because people dont think that he will be around after this year. I want Hack back, he has a chance to be great next year. We have to take that risk.

  12. IMO Hack has not produced year-round results (much like Branch) and is therefore not worth big bucks. Excellent to keep him at a reasonable cost if poss.

What about Branch's contract? Any chance to restructure and save cap space there?

  14. I dont want to spend allot of money on him either, but I dont think it will. Get it done bring him back dont over pay and all is right in the world!

  15. Given Branch's injury status, it would be great to have some consistency with Hack back on the team. Not sure what Bobby will do and counting on Burleson is still a bit scary. I was really impressed with his progress and confidence last year, but he wasn't the go to guy which allowed him to flourish a bit. If he doesn't run back kicks, then my fear is that his head may not always be in the game.

  16. joemc--thank god, someone finally rational on the D-Jack debate. Jackosn played hurt all the time, even playing on torn knee ligaments, and his willingness to push his recover and play hurt led to more serious injuries, and will shorten his career.

Which is one of the unspoken reasons why he was so bitter at Ruskell for giving Branch more money, when Jackson had scrificed so much and was outplaying Branch.

It made me sick to hear Jackson whining about money, but no one should say the dude wasnt willing to play hurt.

Hackett is needed here more than anywhere else, but I think several other teams can and will offer him more than the Hawks can afford.

The problem is we cannot afford to lose him. Bummer.
