Frank Hughes has checked in with the Josh Brown situation over at Seahawks Insider. It doesn't sound particularly good if you are a Josh Brown fan. It may be time to start looking at kickers available in the draft. It is hard for a team with so many quality players on both sides of the ball to pay a player who is on the field for about 8 plays a game top dollar. That said, a lot of teams who need kickers may have the same opinion and therefore Brown could come back after finding out there is no pot of gold for him. I know Holmgren will not be terribly pleased if Brown leaves, although he was the one who let Lindell go and drafted Brown.
If I had to guess, I say he ends up in New Orleans. They had a lot of problems with Mare, and Sean Payton was the OC on those recent Cowboy's teams that literally lost games because of awful kicking. (including the 05' game at Qwest!)
UPDATE (10:42am)- NFL Draft Scout's #2 Kicker is a guy out of St. Xavier named Shane Longest. How can you not love a kicker with the last name Longest. The puns would be never ending. Siragusa would have field day!
Who do they have as #1?
ReplyDeleteI would like to see the Hawks resign Brown. But--
Garrett Hartley of OU has a stronger leg--is accurate on the long kicks; has been making pressure kicks since he was a third game freshman four years ago.
Hartley seems to be able to kick the ball out of the end zone at will--no TD runbacks on those kicks.

ReplyDeleteI would miss Josh Brown. I love the fact that we have one of the only kickers in NFL history who can TACKLE.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I like Brown, we shouldn't pay 2.5 million for him. We can get a good kicker for far less in the draft in the later rounds if necessary, one who will likely be of similar quality as Josh, who, while a good field goal kicker, is not one of the better kickoff kickers.
ReplyDeleteSo while I really enjoy his personality and his consistency on field goals, I think he is replaceable, and certainly is not so dominant a kicker as to deserver 2.5 million a year. He's no Vinateri, and even Vineteri is getting paid too much, given his limited range and age, he's on the downside of his career at this point.
Brown improved on kickoffs this past year, rated 7th in the league, but was still frustratingly inconsistent, often getting one into the endzone, then the next barely inside the 20 yard line. Most of the time the returners were catching them outside of the 10 yard line, not good when you want to stop the returner inside the 20. If we can keep him, great, but if he goes, I know we can find a good kicker in the draft.

If it comes down to paying him the most in the league, let him go. The Seahawks have a history of finding guys to fill that position well. Draft a guy in the late rounds and let him compete against a vet in camp. I love Brown though, so it is tough for me to say this.
ReplyDeleteWho's to say the only options are sign him for 2.5 or let him go?
ReplyDeletePut an offer on the table that the team thinks is fair compensation. Tell Josh the offer stands. Let him go and test the waters. If he gets a better offer good for him. If he doesn't he comes back with a better understanding of what the league thinks he's worth.
The only risk is if some team is desperate enough to think he's worth 2.5.
I'd really like to see him stay. Watching him tackle Hester was just awesome!
ReplyDeleteI am all for keeping him if he does not cost a gang of money. That tackle was amazing! I am a Brown fan, but in this age of football you got to be able to part ways with players you like.
ReplyDeleteIf you cut Alexander (post June) then you save $2+ in cap room. Just about the amount of money it would take to sign Brown.
ReplyDeleteAnd then get hit with nearly 5 million of dead money next year. Just when Lofa and Hill's contracts are up. Face it folks, Shaun will be here next year.
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice to sign JB, but it sounds like he is asking for top kicker dollars. I like JB, but Adam V he is not. My guess is he will test the market and may still sign with us.
