Hello, I have this info I wanted to pass along. I was going to include it in a post once i got Locklear's final numbers, but that may be a couple of days away.
Mike Wahle's signing bonus was only 3.5 million. He also has roster bonuses of 100k in 09' and 10'. The total contract is 5 years 20 million. The first year cap hit is only 2.7 million. Before Locks deal, this leaves the Hawks with more than 12 million in cap space. This info came from someone with access to the NFLPA database.
I said it at the time, had it been a big bonus, his agent would have bragged about it. To be honest, even i didn't expect it to be this low. I thought the contact would reach 25 million. Hawk fans will take it. Lets hope he can still play. Now we can keep our fingers crossed that one or two guys get signed before Friday.
Is that $12 million with or without Trufant's designation?
ReplyDeleteIf it's $12 million with Tru already included, I'd say we're sitting in decent shape.
With Trufant.... Without Locklear. That # comes from my own calculations. It is actually like 12.3.
ReplyDeleteThat's great, but does that mean he isn't viewed as highly? Also, I just saw more of Heath Benedict, and he looked even better. One more thing, the TE situation, yesterday with Davis and Carlson both having bad showings, I LOVED IT. One of them will be available for us in the 2nd round.

With Carlson's showing, he could possibly end up there with our 4th round pick.
ReplyDeleteThose number are excellent. Sounds like Wahle really wanted to be a part of a championship.
ReplyDeleteA TE nobody has talked about is Craig Stevens from Cal. 4.59 40, 27 reps (strongest amongst TE), 7.07 Cone drill. He is known as a great blocker who excels in combo blocks and picking up blitzing LBs.
ReplyDeleteFrom NFL.COM:
Positives: Prototype size for the position. ... Impressive blocker. ... Good strength and technique at the point of attack. ... Physical at the point. ... Has the athleticism and strength to make combo blocks, helping the offensive tackle seal the defensive end before releasing to block the incoming linebacker in space. ... Good release off the line of scrimmage, using a combination of agility and strength to get clear. ... Effective short- and mid-range target. ... Uses his size well to block the defender from the ball. ... Reliable hands. ... Fights for extra yardage. ...
Negatives: Lacks great burst off the snap. ... Isn't the elite athlete so en vogue at the position. ... Lacks the speed to challenge defenses down the seam and isn't a breakaway threat. ... Didn't develop into a featured component of the Cal offense.
My notes, Telford does not use the TE as a receiver but the lack of speed was a perception and the reality 4.59 is miles better than Carlson's 4.89
Also he is classic Ruskell character player
So would that at least give us a little more to tie up brown, I know hes just a kicker but the dude has helped us win a pretty good # of games
ReplyDeleteI love JB, but he is still just a kicker, and they are a dime a dozen.
ReplyDeleteSave that coin for something important, like a RB< TE< OL< DT CB<, you know, a skill position.
Don't ever give a kicker big money... They all suck under pressure. Ask Jim Kelly, or Payton...
andrew--wow, dude! nice analysis. I must have seen this kid play, but I dont remember...sounds like a later round steal.
ReplyDeleteSounds like the Hawks are a little sketched about Wahle's injury, and the rumors that he lost a lot of his strength and maybe built himself up bigger than his frame can handle.
Though it burns my butt, it shows that Ruskell does his homework. The wierd thing is how much money he gave Lock. I dont get it, it makes him one of the top RT in football. Almost 6 mill a year! Thats MONEY!
So that leaves the Hawks with 6-7 million left to sign our FA's and rookies. Not great. I thought we had 13 million, if you count the money from last years Pork Chop contract...

Lesthomas-- while the average on Locks deal is 6 per, I doubt the first year cap hit is that. Probably in the vicinity of 3 or 4 mil. Plus, as I have said many times, if they need to maneuver some room, they have plenty of ways to do it. The Skins just shaved over 20 million in cap space, the Hawks can create a few million with out endangering their future cap space
ReplyDeleteGreat deal for a player who admittedly said he wasn't healthy till the end of last year.
