Trufant: Trade Bait??

According to this report from Newsday, if the Giants can't get their mitts on DeAngelo Hall, they will turn their trade eye towards the Seahawks Marcus Trufant.

I have seen this idea championed by several fans. I am not sure the Hawks would even consider it. The real question is what would be the cost. Obviously, he could be had via poison pill for two first rounders because he is the franchise player. A trade would seem to suggest something less.

It seems more likely that the Giants would get Hall, considering he is actually being shopped and Marcus isn't, but if that doesn't stop Newsday from writing it, it doesn't stop me from posting it. Discuss....

  1. sure...just send over Brandon Jacobs...

Seriously though, they have the last pick in the draft, and we'll get a solid position at our #25 pick - possibly even Mendenhall/Stewart. I don't think they could offer us anything - quality CB's are too rare in the league right now.

  2. I made a post discussing that the Seahawks have to at least franchise Tru because he is a commodity and could possibly be traded if a long term deal isn't going to happen. If a team out there thinks he is worth 9-10 million a year, than they'll give up some serious picks to aquire him. I'd love to keep him, but I feel he is a top 10-15 corner, not top 5.

  3. So even if we got jacobs, a bit injury prone himself and there first rounder would you feel good going into the season with jennings wilson babs as the top three.

  4. They can have Tru, just send us all their draft picks. lol

I would not be comfortable with what we have on the team after Tru, that said everyone has a price, are the Giants willing to give it?

  5. This blog could be the best thing that has happened on the internet in quite some time.

Truf and DeAngelo are pretty comparable players. You could plug DeAngelo in here right now and not lose a step. Yeah, DeAngelo has been known to have a bad attitude, but this team is lacking attitude in the worst way. Also, If I was playing shuffle board on the Titanic while it was sinking, I would probably have a bad attitude as well.

What are his contract demands? that would be the make or break imo. If he wants less than Truf, I would be interested in the Giants No. 1 this year and maybe a 2nd next year. Davis and Mendenhall? Are you kidding me?

  6. Maybe I don't understand the Franchise tag correctly, but doesn't Tru being tag mean a team should/have to give up 2 first rounders to get him?

What is this talk about the 32nd pick and a high 2nd rounder next year? NOt even close to worth it.

2 first rounders is worth it, but not the 32nd pick and a 2nd rounder next year.

We could get the two 1st rounders and trade one for Hall and the other and a 3rd this year to get Stewart/Mendenhall and a Fred Davis or OT or DT.

  7. I think a team can negotiate a deal and doesn't necessarily have to require two 1st round picks if they trade a Franchised player. One example that comes to mind is when Buffalo Franchised Peerless Price (how the mighty have fallen) several years back and traded him to Atlanta for just one 1st round pick.

  8. Michael, yes Tru was brought up in the article, "But another source familiar with the Giants' situation said Friday night that Trufant was not in their sights." If they are serious in their pursuit of a high end CB I don't know why they would consider TRU over Asanti Samuel? The cap hit from the contract would likely be comparable and Assanti wouldn't require a trade. Besides, the Giants have a solid CB core!

  9. This is a long shot at happening at best. But i agree, i've been waiting for a site like this my whole life lol! Love it!!!

  10. My thought when I saw the entire franchising Trufant thing was that Ruskell was setting up the situation where somebody would make him (Trufant) an offer, and we would snag 2 1st rounders. Now if it was say Dallas instead of NYG, they own #22 and #28 this year, and we would get both. Anybody else would give up their pick this year and next. I do not think that I have a problem with this. Trufant has been pretty ordinary until suddenly during his "contract" year he is in the Pro-Bowl. Seattle plays a variation of the "Tampa-2" defense, and that is not as dependent on CB's to deepcover, which is one of the reasons our CB's tend to be the guys that do a lot more of the tackling. If somebody wants to give us 2 1st rounders for him, God bless you and here ya go..

  11. How many times have you seen somebody give up two number one's for a franchised player?

    Name them all.

A franchising team can made any kind of trade involving a player they've franchised. The franchise tag allows them to control any movement by that player, rather than giving the leverage to the player.

In the case of Dallas, where a corner is one of the top three priorities, Jerry Jones would more likely use them to snag Darren McFadden from Pork U for which Mr. Jones has an affinity.

Few teams have been as lucky as the Seahawks in getting an all-pro and superbowl mvp for a first round draft choice ... hey, wait a minute, lucky?

So, let's see, the Hawks give up a first rounder for Branch. Now they give up first rounder Trufant, for the last pick in the first round?

They might dangle Trufant just because they don't want to get into a situation where they have to franchise him a second time, as the Hawks have faced previously.

It depends on how much they really believe last year was a breakout year ... as opposed to a decent year in his contract year after three years when he regressed from his rookie season.

And after dumping a bundle into smurfs Jennings and Wilson at that position you see just how much the Hawks have invested in the position, with questionable results.

Jennings improved, but will have to do better to justify his first round selection. Wilson will have to get uninjured and show some decent playing minutes.

CB for the Hawks remains a conundrum.

  12. Hawks got two number one's from Dallas for Joey Galloway.

  13. Hawks got 2 #1s for Rick Mirer from Chicago, 2 #1's from Dallas for Joey Galloway, it actually happens far more often than you might think.

  14. I've said it before, but I would rather have a guy like Alan Faneca and $2.5 million of cap space and the Giants first (or second) round pick than Trufant and his $9.5 million cap eating number.

I know corners don't grow on trees but we also know guards are important and this way we could have two great guards this upcoming season instead of the two terrible ones we had last season. We'd also have an extra pick for a DL or RB.

Ideally, I'd rather have Trufant signed to a more cap-friendly and longer term deal but it sounds like his agent is going to be an ass (we all would too).

  15. The 32nd pick is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Football outsiders did an interesting series of articles on the value of draft picks several years ago (sorry, can't find link). Every draft pick has risk because you don't know in advance which players will succeed. Because the higher picks get the higher contracts, the picks also have different monetary costs associated with them.

An analysis of the costs and risks showed that the best value was actually right near the beginning of the second round.

  16. Even Tru admitted his numbers improved due to our pass rush. I say take the 2 first round pks. 9 mil can really help a team. We can get a RB and a TE in the first round. Who knows maybe even a DB. Is it me or does anyone else think Tru is being a bit selfish?? YeeHaawks

  17. The draft is actually loaded with some relatively good CBs, if we realize we cannot sign Trufant, how about taking Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the second? Lets say rd. 1 we take Davis, Carlson, or Cottam. Rd.2 Rodgers-Chromartie. Rd.3 Forte or Tashard Choice. Rd.4 DT Man Eater of some sort. Ok I got carried away.

But I think Kelly Jennings played better you guys realized considering he was thrown at much more. Josh Wilson is a question because of injuries and being a number4 CB. Babs is solid, not fantastic. I think we might have tagged Trufant to gives an oppurtunity to take advantage of a draft loaded with RBs, CBs, DTs, and TEs (the truth the difference between TEs is not as great as at other positions). We are not a team that throws our rookies to the wolves, most work behind the scenes for their 1st year anyway

  18. What about Trufant to the Giants for Shockey and another player or draft pick?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Interesting thought, what do you guys think...

We trade Tru to New York and recive Boss and a 2nd rounder? We solve our TE situation with a young guy who won't make big bucks for years.

By solving TE, we also create a need at CB. However, we would now have an extra $9 million of cap space and an extra second round pick.

That extra pick would help Ruskell go after best available guys instead of going for needs right off the bat.

  21. What's kind of sad is that the guys at Seahawks Insider get paid for what they do. Maybe TNT should hire you...

  22. I agree you should apply for a job at TNT

  23. aburnhawkfan...please don't ever mention Shockey and the Seahawks in the same sentence ever again!

  24. Ruskell's philosophy has been to build a defense around a strong front seven. One of the results of this will be that the DB's will look relatively better than they really are. This can lead to good trade opportunities and I think this could definitely be one.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree with the reader who said Trufant is a top 15 corner, not a top 5 CB.

Seriously, Boss and a 2nd rounder for Trufant sounds like a deal that will make the Giants and Seahawks better (especially since the Hawks will get an extra $9.5 million in cap space).

Even though they won the SB, the Giants are still the second best team in their division. If any of us had a $1,000 to gamble... would we really bet the Giants could beat the Pats again or would we really bet that grand that the Giants will finish higher than the Cowpukes next season? Congrats to the Giants (seriously, I was rooting for them in the end) but they do not go into next season as the favorites in the NFC.

  26. someone said who gives up two first rounders for a player??? we did my friend

  27. I think Boss and a 2cd rounder from the Giants is too low (31 st pick in 2cd rd), maybe add a 4th rd also

    ReplyDelete
  28. 32nd pick in the 2nd round.
    They won the Super Bowl.
    Sounds like a good/fair deal.

  29. Are we seriously buying this? Maybe there is something I am missing, but Asante Samuel, who is after the $$$$, is an URFA. Why would the giants, pay 9.5mil/year, and give up draft picks? Samuels is at least as good as Trufant. Look at their line versus our line, Trufant was the benefactor of a good DL, and one of the best, if not the best trio of LB's.

  31. there is no way it makes sense to trade a player of Tru's ability to one of our biggest rivals in the NFC. It makes no sense to help them get better, unless it helps us a lot more.

    Not going to happen.

bobyk--youre nuts! (well, ok--I THINK you are). Give up on Faneca! Not happening, and another G that we dont need that much is NOT better than having a shut-down cornerback and a decent number 1 wr (hackett). In fact, Id rather resing Brown for 3 mill than sign Faneca for 7 and screw our cap completely.
