Draft Not As Deep As We May Have Originally Thought.

Here is an interesting article written by Pat Kirwan over at NFL.COM. I thought it poses some interesting questions on something I know will get a good discussion going...the draft.

Kirwan argues that the three positions that are running a little low on talent are Safety, Guard, and Tight End.

By his count, there are a whole lot of teams who need these positions. He has an interesting take on Fred Davis (wonder if that is why I liked this piece??)..
Personally, I like USC's Fred Davis in the first round, and if teams like Buffalo, Carolina and Seattle pass in the first round, he will be gone by the time they all select in the second round.
However, I think the case can be made that the Hawks also need a young safety and boy would we like another mauler in the mold of that other guy we once had whose name shall remain unspoken.

So how do you rank em'? If we take one, we miss out on the top talent at the other two positions mentioned. And if you want a different position, like say a DT, Does that make sense if G/S/TE are really weak positions? Lots of interesting positions on this I would imagine.

Another way to think about it is that maybe, this gives the Hawks good leverage. Say Albert is available at #25, or somebody really wants Phillips? It just may be easier to get out of #25 that previously thought. The hard part would be passing on those players. END

  1. That was a good read. My hope is that RB will determine how we draft. If who Rusk may like in the 1st is gone, it makes for tough decisions. TE in 1st possibly a 'reach pick', but a run on them in early 2nd could have us miss out on the talent level we're after. Would Tim wait until round 3 for TE? Maybe we like Davis or Keller enough to take is 1st. I somehow doubt it.

Trade down for 2 seconds I could see from player's avail. standpoint, but hard to make sense of trade or financial considerations.

What complicates it is that if we miss a 1st round RB, the next good one would come in round 2 (J.Charles, C.Johnson, others) - along with the available good TE.

Of course, I'm no GM. Ruskell may have an entirely different agenda than mine. I simply yearn for fresh blood at RB and TE.

  2. Hamlin is overrated. Safety is not a issue right now. We have actual worries to fix and that is not one of them.

    Hamlin is overrated.

  3. Where was Hamlin mentioned? I think the "mauler" that he was indirectly referring to was Hutchinson.

  4. You may have me there. Apparently I confused a Probowl safety for a now potential need in the draft. I am just getting tired of rhetoric about Hutch.

    Bring back Skansi and Largent!!

    Oh wait, they retired.

  9. Raible, number 83 baby! I remember him returning a blocked punt for a TD vs. San Fran in a pre-season game.

  10. Wouldn't Hamlin be the 'mauled?

  11. Whether I'm correct or not, I read that as Kenny Easley also. And upon later reflection, I thought it could have been Hutchinson.

  12. I personally believe there is a difference in the TE position and the G and S positions in this year's draft because at both G and S there's one top guy that is a rare talent (even that is questionable with Phillips), but at TE there are none of those players. I think the idea that the TE class is deep is actually somewhat accurate in that there is not much difference beween the top five or six TE's. Would I really want to pay a round one pick for F. Davis or Keller or a 2nd for Bennett or K. Davis (maybe for Cottam b/c I think he is a perfect fit for the Hawks)? Will there be that much of a difference between them and a Finley or Stevens in the third, fourth or even 5th? I doubt it.
