Charting The Defensive Personnel

Hey Folks. In case you have been napping, or just haven't quite put it all together yet, it appears that Tim Ruskell and the Seahawks have put together quite a formidable defense. Not only that, but they are locking up the key cogs for years to come.

I thought that maybe it would be informative to chart this out, so that we could look at maybe what could still be done, say....in the upcoming draft.

To see the chart and discuss.....

As you can see in the chart, not only is this a really good defense, but it is young and will be around for quite a while. To begin, lets look at age.

While age does not effect all positions equally, the four clear spots of note here are Patrick Kerney, Brian Russel, Deon Grant and Julian Peterson. Each player declines at their own rate. Two of those guys are pro bowlers. The other two are safeties. This supports my theory that the team should be looking at a young safety in this draft. Grooming them now would be a smart move. Also, arguably, Kerney and Peterson are the two best pass rushers, albiet from different spots. Since the team needs a reserve linebacker anyway, look for a young guy who could fit the JP mold to be drafted as well. Kerney, who has crazy methods for keeping himself feeling good, is likely to end his career here, signed till 2012 and already 31, the oldest member of this unit. Getting depth behind him can be done now, but the same could be said about adding a QB behind the 32 yr old Hasselbeck, and I am not ready to do that yet.

The other spot of note is DT. The team is going to have Rocky Bernard be a free agent after this year. Also, he will be 29. Being that the one area this defense has struggled is stopping the run against mammoth offensive lines, it would make sense to get a DT too. If you try to fill Rocky's mold, it will be important to get a disrupter. As reader S.T.T.B.M. pointed out earlier, Bernard's game is more about wreaking havoc and allowing others to collect the stats. This could be hard to find. I think it is important the team take one early, but you all know I a have a man crush on a certain DT from a roman catholic school near Chicago. He would fit the mold, but I am sure a number of players do.

I think the most important thing to note, is that overall, the Defense averages 26.3 years of age, and average being signed for 3 more years. This is one way to keep a "Superbowl Window" open. By the way, that is a concept I believe in about as much as Santa Claus. By planning and drafting smart, and then locking up guys like Lofa and Marcus, this team could become the Atlanta Braves of the NFL. Lets just hope they get a few more world championships out of it.

  1. the best thing we can do for our defense is get the running game going. that's priority one.

  2. i agree shams, if we can get a top notch RB or guard in the first i don't know how we could pass it up.

  4. Next year our running game will be solid. Tim Ruskell gave us a young and motivated every-down RB in Jones, and a bruiser 3rd down back in Duckett. I like these signings and think we will see immediate change for the better.

As far as I'm concerned, we have the best defense in the league...Every one of them are playmakers, with the ability to change an entire game at any second...I'm still giddy over the Tatupu and Trufant deals. WOO-HOO!!!

    GO HAWKS!

  6. Mike, do you know where there is a link to the press conference for the Tru signing? Love the signing and kinda wanted to watch the press conference.

Totally agree shams. Would also like to see a DT taken only because of Tubbs inability to stay healthy.

  7. Yep... need to add a stud DT & DE , then we'll be extrememly formidable

  8. This defense is awesome and a major feather in the cap of Ruskell.

Seriously, Brian Russell is the only starter that isn't above average at his position, and even Russell isn't bad.

I agree with some of the other posters. This could EASILY be the leagues best defense in 2008, I know I'll jinx it, but just imagine if Tubbs is healthy in 2009!?!?

  9. Mike,
I noticed that you have Babs listed as the Dime back, and Wilson as the Nickel. Do you see Wilson taking over as the Nickel back this year, with Babs seeing a more limited role?

  10. Tom- I put them that way, because I believe it is the wish of the front office. I think they would like Babs to be more of a swing guy, who backs up both s/cb. Wilson was a 2nd round pick, so I think the least they expect out of him is as the nickel back.

  11. Haven't seen the press conference video posted yet. If I do, I will link it.

  12. Thanks, Mike. That makes perfect sense. Babs is a valuable swing man, and hopefully Wilson will show some improvement over last season. He looked like a pretty smart player in college, and he's got great speed.

  13. I have a gut feeling that Jennings is going to have a break-out year. He's surrounded by smart players in the secondary, and has a great coaching staff. I think he's learned a lot and will take it to the next level.

  14. It looks as though the question marks are:

    Bernard
    Tapp
    Tubbs (always a question mark)

Tapp is just 23. He could become the next M.Sinclair, if he continues to develop. Will we let him walk like Phillip Daniels?

Bernard is a disruptive force (see: bodyslamming QBs) and key element. What does his future look like? His contract is up after this year, according to Mike's chart.

Tubbs. Time will tell. So will 'games played'.

  15. The chart sheds light that we are becoming potentially thin at DT and DE.

Likely, we draft each of those positions and hopefully still land one of our favorite TEs in round 1 or 2.

  16. Tubbs' deal is up after this year too. Although he might consider signing back with us for cheap considering we have paid him to rehab for 3 out of the 4 season he has been here.

  17. IMO the defense is decent but not formidable. They get pushed around too much on the road. Hopefully an improved running game will help but I still think they need to upgrade the DL.

  19. I have a crush on the defense, period. Let's face it, I'd like a jersey, but it would mean changing my clothes every quarter at the least.

What is a girl to do?

  20. I am with you Strategerie, I have Lofa, Leroy, Marcus, Tapp, and Cortez Kennedy. Any chance he can come back and play DT for us this year?? That would be sweeeeeeeeeet!!!

  21. Excellent post, Michael.. It's nice to see it broken down like that..

My fear, albeit a small fear, is that Tubbs has the breakout season we have all been hoping for and then parlays it into a big contract somewhere else..

When I say big contract, I don't mean Sapp or Haynesworth money, but more like the DJ Hackett situation - more than we are willing to spend, and for exactly the same reasons..

Would I take a huge season from Tubbs and run the risk of him leaving? Absolutely.. His knees will never be the same and his number of productive years remaining are greatly outweighed by the risk of retaining him.. We should take whatever we can get from him this season and then just pray he feels he owes us something..

  22. I love this defense.

I See one of these safeties on the roster next year.

    Kenny Phillips, Miami
    DaJuan Morgan, NC State
    Thomas Decoud, Cal
    Jonathan Hefney, Tennessee
    Dominique Barber, Minnesota
    Jamar Adams, Michigan
    Craig Steltz, LSU
    Jamie Silva, Boston College
    Darrien Williams, Oklahoma
    Marcus Griffin, Texas

  23. Michael, I tried to buy a defensive jersey late last year and was cruelly rebuffed. In other words, there were none to be had in the area! Julian Peterson and I have the same birthday, so maybe I should start with his, huh?

Of course, all best-dressed Seahawks fans can't possibly be seen without the cool green gloves and shoes, either.
