I love waking up to news like this! Marcus Trufant, according to profootballtalk.com, has reached a long term agreement to remain a Seattle Seahawk. The deal is 6yrs 50.2 million. Marcus is receiving 20 million in guarantees and essentially 28 million over the first three years.
Well, obviously, Marcus blinked. And I think he should be commended for it. When Lofa reached his long term agreement, I commented that Marcus would have to figure out whether he was a Seahawk or 10 mil a year CB. Well, he chose Seahawk, and probably in no small part because of the team spirit shown recently by not only Lofa, but Kerney, Grant, Terrill, and Babs. This is going to be a heck of D next year and probably moving forward.
You can see the deal averages pretty close to 8.3 per year. With the first three years paying out 28 million, that is a little more than nine per year. So my guess is that the salaries are pretty fair and Tru got him self a nice chunk of change up front. It will be hard for me to get the info, unless someone reports it, the NFLPA recently changed their website and currently it showing people who have signed elsewhere as Hawks, so who knows if it will have base salaries again. Either way this appears to be a better deal than any of the other recent ones signed by corners.
Oh yeah, and the best news, this is all just in time to sign Olindo Mare, who is in town today. Let the Mare watch begin(god please no).
This is GREAT news Michael. I had just checked your website, and it had nothing new since yesterday, but then rotoworld.com almost blew me away.
ReplyDeleteWow, I am so very impressed by our FO, do they ever know how to get things done.
What does the deal seem like to you? Did we get a back-loaded deal? Is it a good deal?
It seems like to me we are paying in the ballpark of 9 mil. per year. Sounds right, seeing how much CB's are being paid these days, I would say we got got some love from Trufant. What, did he sucker-up to Tatupu and take his advice?
Anyways, I really want to hear what you have to say about it, Rotoworld didn't explain it very simply so as to know how the salary broke down.
I suppose this opens up more salary space tho.
GREAT NEWS! Keeping Lock and Tru. Getting JJ, Wahle, Jeb and Duck. And then on top of all that extending 51.
ReplyDeleteThis is quietly looking like a great offseason for a team that was already almost there. Flying under the radar to the superbowl!
How is Tru worth 28 million guaranteed and Tatupu only worth 16million guaranteed?!
ReplyDeleteIf I'm Tatupu, Im not to pleased with either Tru or Ruskell.
But it kicks ass if you're a Hawks fan! We signed em both! HA! Eat youre heart out Giants and Packers! we're gonna eat your lunch for the next 5 years!

I am sure Lofa says good for Marcus. He placed value on other things above money. Marcus wanted to get the money. Tom Brady has a much smaller deal than a lot of qbs he is way better than, but I am sure he doesn't care. He has a supermodel and a bunch of rings they don't. I wouldn't play the Lofa vs Marcus angle up, I am sure it is no biggie.
ReplyDeletewow - awesome news! just trying to run the numbers: guaranteed bonus of 3.33M/year + roughly 5M/year in salary for the first 4 years + the 3M bonus in year 3 (to get to 28M in year 3, and 34M in year 4)? i must be missing something - these cap hits seem too high...
ReplyDeleteMS, any word on the cap numbers of this deal?

oops - just read the 2nd half of this post about base salaries...

Tru, You da man!
ReplyDeleteTakes pressure off drafting a CB and means we can address other positions. Very nice.

I bet we will get numbers when the Seahawk Beat Reporters get to work
ReplyDeleteFirst time I found breaking news not on your website, keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteMare? I thought you were for him Michael?
ReplyDeleteI think he would be an Ok backup kicker, and a great guy to keep for kick-offs, like I think you mentioned. Maybe I am just reading your comment wrong.
GO HAWKS! Another great day at the office.
Even i sleep sometimes. It is pretty rare that Seahawk news breaks at 5 am PST
ReplyDeleteI put that in there for the readers who are opposed to Mare. I just want a kicker who can make kicks. I am holding judgment until the season on any new kicker we have. If it is Mare, he better be good. If it is a rookie he better be good. Because the rest of this team is gearing up for a run to Tampa!
ReplyDeleteSorry i forgot about the time difference, i live in stealer country and i hate it
ReplyDeleteI hope were signing Mare as a backup linebacker because the guy definitely isn't a kicker anymore.
ReplyDeleteI lived in Altoona growing up. It was terrible! I was a Penguins fan!
ReplyDeleteI would hope that he is going to make about 875k in base the first year with about an 8.5 mil roster bonus. It would be nice to get the guareneed money out of the way early.
ReplyDeleteI think Mare is going to sign with us. If Denver didn't give him a deal then we most likely will. Kicker is a must for us now. I think that we sign him to a vet minimum with a little bonus with the notion that he is going to be a Mentor to a young draft pick. Mare has been in the league for a while now and nows what it takes to be a solid kicker. Lastly, if he ends up reinventing himself after last years disaster with New Orleans then even better for us. I still tend to think that if we do sign him he will mostly be used to groom the draft pick.
ReplyDeleteWhat does it matter that Tom Brady has a supermodel, huh???
ReplyDeleteHey, Mybe Mare just needs to be on a team that can get the ball within the 30yrd line. I hope we can get an undrafted free agent Kicker and have him turn out like Brown or better. Either way this offseason has been the best I have seen in a while. Here we come Tampa.....
ReplyDeleteFrank Hughes has it up and posted at Seahawks Insider. I'm starting to believe it now with multiple sources. This is great news.
ReplyDeleteChristopher, DC
You guys forget that Tom Brady has an has a baby with another woman other than his "SUPERMODEL" girlfriend...his money stack is getting smaller everyday that kid is alive...until it is 18 yrs old. Just one word for brady....Raincoat.
ReplyDeleteI hope we draft little Brady when he is 18! Dynasty!
ReplyDeleteon another note, I just tried to book a hotel room for the Superbowl in Tampa, and the Marriots are charging 10K per room. Most places won't let you book it yet. freaking extortionists!!
This is great news!
ReplyDeleteSo, what does this mean? I was pretty sure they'd take a DB on the first day of the draft and while they still may go for BPA, I think it allows them to focus on D-line, TE and O-line, not necessarily in that order.
If they could get Tubby back (big "if " for a big man) and draft some quality depth, this D will rock. Which is a good thing, given who they will be playing this year.
Good things in store!
I think that now Tru is locked up it is in our best interest to trade up for 2 early 2nd rounders unless J Stew drops. Get a TE and a DT/DE and look to RB in the 3rd. Trade Mo for a 5th and pick up a CB/OT in the 4th and 5th. Use our 6th for a kicker and project picks from there on out. Chances are Laws could fall to the 34th pick and have our choice at Davis/Carlson/Keller at 37. Choice and possibly even Forte could be available in the 3rd. Barton at OT in 4th as mike mentioned and I'm sure TR has his eyes on a CB that will drop to the 5th.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone think if they cant trade down in the first they take the best DT at that time to make this Defense complete. Go for TE in #2 and Rb in #3 (Rice or Smith)
ReplyDeleteAwesome News! This offseason is shaping up very nicely. I hope Trufant is as good next year as he was this year.
ReplyDeleteIf those rookie WR's are as good as TR thinks they are, and Tubbs comes back, TR is looking like a great chess player.
Pardon me for my thickheadedness...but what does this do for the salary cap issue? Does this clear up some room for some new signings?
ReplyDeleteI'll be interested to hear someone analyze the monetary effects of this signing once the contract details become available.
TMann
Tmann, this defintely lowers his cap hit for this year, thus freeing up some money. I wouldn't expect them to go after anybody but a kicker. They will probably use this space, but Aleanders space to start locking up the large number of free agents for next year, like Leroy and Rocky.
ReplyDeleteI remember reading that Mare was playing injured the entire year last year, which resulted in the 10 or 17 kicking.
ReplyDeleteHe was saying how he hoped to throw out last year due to the injury. So, how good was he before that?
Wonder if we'll finally hear something about cutting Shaun when April comes around (as reported by a few people).
ReplyDeleteThat's one story it'd be nice to put to bed.
TNT is saying he'll get 10 mill guarenteed this year seven the next year and in both of these years his base salary will be 1 million dollars. In year three he'll get a three mill bonus and base of like 5.7 mill.
ReplyDeletethis is huge for the salary cap, too bad Brown and Hack wont be there celebrating our Super Bowl win in Tampa
GO HAWKS
Seahawkpeenz
Lofa had a bargain basement price for '08.
ReplyDeleteTru had a huge cap hit in '08.
For starters, that's where the Tru contract is better/bigger than Tatupu's.
bk
AWESOME news. Trufant, you made the right decision. This totally makes my day.
ReplyDeleteIs a Leroy Hill signing totally unfeasible? I'm feeling greedy.
