Home Town Discount

John Clayton just posted an article about Marcus Trufant's signing titled Trufant Gives Seattle Hometown Discount.

I thought that this is an interesting topic. Why? Because the Hawks seem to be darn effective at getting players to agree to these deals. By my count there have been four deals that could be counted as hometown discounts this offseason.

Mike Wahle...took very little money, has ties to Bainbridge Island
Sean Locklear...good young tackles usually get more than 12 mil guaranteed.
Lofa Tatupu....No need to test the market, he loves it in Seattle
Marcus Trufant....took less than every other corner who signed, local guy.

Is Leroy Hill next? The days of free agents leaving and then bashing the organization ala Chike Okeafor are long gone. This is the benefit of having a successful, and well run franchise. I will go out on a limb and say the only other team that is keeping their own, for less, as well or better is New England. For those who argue that Ruskell alienates the players and upsets them with his negotiating style, this is pretty solid evidence to the contrary.

Also, Congratulations Marcus....Enjoy your honeymoon big guy! Come back safe! END

  1. Mike, do you think Rocky is going to be worth resigning? I think he will want Tommy Kelly money and he has been productive in the pass rush, I think he has been somewhat of a liability in the run game. In our system, most of the sacks come from the outside, Hill, Peterson and Kerney. Do you think the Hawks will opt to save the money and go for more of a run stuffer to go with Mebane?

  2. Frank Hughes over at the Insider made a good point that with Washington state having no state income tax Trufant's take home money is roughly equal to that of Dangelo Hall and Nate Clements who are paying 9.8% of their paycheck to Governor Terminator. Looks like the Hawks may be emphasizing this benefit to players/agents as they attempt to compare other salaries around the league.

  3. Evan,
I would think that the Hawks will offer Rocky a contract, but if he wants Tommy Kelly money, he'll probably have to sign somewhere else to get it. Even though he is not as good against the run as he is against the pass, it would make sense to keep a good pass rushing DT in the starting lineup to complement Mebane. With two big run-stuffing D-Tackles, we lose some of that speed and quickness that the Hawks like in their defensive linemen, and our pass rushing would suffer a little. I think in today's game there different kinds of DTs that teams look for, and the Hawks would prefer to have a solid "pass-rush DT" in addition to good run stuffers. That's just my 2 cents, anyway, I could be off in my analysis.

  4. Oh, and congrats to Tru and the FO. This is huge. The D should be even better next year, especially with Ruskell working his draft magic and filling up the roster with some young talent. Can you say, "TOP TEN D"?

  5. Hey Guys, remember after 05' I think, Rocky was a free agent and expeceted to get big money, but go no offers instead, that is why he resigned here on the cheap. I don't think he is as valuable to other teams as he is the Seahawks and they will probably give him another fair and resonable deal that will allow him to be a Hawk till he is close to retiring. Another home town discount deal too probably.

  6. One of my delivery drivers at work told me that he heard on 99.9 the rock today that Hasselbeck was in a car accident. Not real serious but he might have a bum leg.... if I hear anything else I will post a comment about it.....

  7. I guess it was a listener who called in after he was in the accident with Matt. Appearently he and Matt were trying to merge into the same lane and he put Matt into the wall. Both vehicles were towed away and Matt left the scene in an ambulance.....

  10. for all you lawyers in the House.....We are having a debate at work. If Marcus signs Thursday and gets married on Saturday does his wife get half of his signing bonus should they get divorced down the line?

    ReplyDelete
  11. It gets prorated over the term of their intended marriage unless she uses the franchise tag.

    ReplyDelete
  12. no she will not get anything automatically because WA is a no fault state when it comes to divorce.... I'm not a lawyer but I talked to a very good friend who is so it is accurate...

  15. what's this about Hasselbeck in a car accident???

    ReplyDelete
  16. somebody needs to call 99.9 and see what this is

  17. The press conference is at 1pm and I am not going to give it the extensive coverage the last one got. There is no suspense. It will be a lot of happy faces and sports cliches.

    ReplyDelete
  18. happy faces? sure, until they mention our Pro Bowl QB who just got in a car accident..

  19. The car accident has not been confirmed officially, I am trying to get some info out og KISW and I am checking the local hospitals...

  20. What do we do with the Cap Space we just got back?

My vote is take the SA hit this year instead of splitting it. Are there other free agents out there that we'd like to sign?

    Robert

  21. Clare Farnsworth is reporting the cap hit this year is 2.5 million. Saves us 7 million completely covers the SA cap hit when we release him.

    Robert

  22. I saw that. I can't figure out how the cap hit would be any less than 3 million with the reported numbers, but either way, we made the space for something, and I wouldn't expect anything more than a kicker to be signed.

Either they will take Shaun's hit all in one year, or they will use the space to create a higher cap number like they did last year with Pork Chop.

  23. Concerning the Hass situation (if its true), would you want to be standing there on the freeway waiting for a ride if you were a probowl athlete? hell no, take the free ride from the ambulance and meet your wife at the hospital. oh, and i guess its time for a new infiniti from infiniti of bellevue.

  24. Hasselbeck, car accident update:

After all of my calling and inquiries to local area hospitals...I found nothing. Either the call to KISW was a hoax or nobody is releasing any information about it. I think it was a hoax....If I hear any different I will post immediately.

  25. I think its unfair to put all the blame on the diminished sack totals on Bernards shoulders. He has played through injuries, and more importantly, Marshall has changed what he has Rocky do since picking up Petersen.

In '06, Marshall got stupid and stubborn, and most of the blitzes were Petersen...and last year he fixed the problem by blitzing by committee.

Rocky is being used more to stuff the run and create sack opportunities for others. Part of the blame goes to scheme, part to injuries, part to Rocky getting paid...

I wonder if he's even worth another 4 million dollar a year contract though...and Tommy Kelly and the Raiders belong in another dimension: they have no bearing on reality.

  26. Nice Mr. Snuggles. He better call that lady from the state farm insurance commercial too, they need to talk.

    ReplyDelete
  27. dirtyhawk, good work, but I doubt the hospitals would release any information.

    ReplyDelete
  28. They would at least tell me if he was admitted. Plus I was posing as his brother. All you need to know to get information like that is a birth date....

    ReplyDelete
  32. it was from somone I know in pasco. He heard it on am radio. No comfirmation on the station. Totally unrelated to my other source so I am starting to think it is true. I won't be confident in it until I hear it myself or read about it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. their sports station is kfld 870
they may be repeating bad info
    suggest calling them

    ReplyDelete

  36. kinda like the deion branch rumor some tard started on sehawk insider earlier this offseason. that idiot was worse--he deliberately lied, saying branch had bought a house in Indy and was secretly traded to the Dolts.

dirtyhawk, no worries. It was interesting while it lasted!
