Great interview and video clips with Trevor Laws, DT, Notre Dame. I will be honest, I barely knew this kid until the Senior Bowl. But the more I read and the more I see, I really think he warrants consideration with the #25 pick. Anyway, if you want to get a better feel for Trevor, the man, and the player, check out this NFLN video right here.
UPDATE-- Here is the link to write up on Laws done by Field Gulls, they seem to have been on this bandwagon even before yours truly. Glad I am not the only one who has seen the light!
Trevor Laws is my favorite player in this draft and I agree, he's one of those guys that you like a little more, every time you find out something about him.
ReplyDeleteThe good news is that because of his size, I don't think they would have to spend the 25th pick on him, he should be there for the second round pick.

ReplyDeleteSeahawks taking a long look at.....
Just once I want the Hawks to trade up and get someone exciting...Rashard Mendenhall. Incredible speed, incredible strength, this man is a freak.
ReplyDeleteI think most teams are pretty skeptical about trading up for any RB, because 1st round RB's have about the same success rate as late round running backs. How pissed would you be now if the Hawks had some how jumped up and got "can't miss" Reggie Bush?
ReplyDeleteSorry but I don't think Laws is physically gifted enough for the first round and he's probably not this years Lofa. But I understand your thinking we need another dt and after Dorsey and Ellis theres not too much left.
ReplyDeleteMike--Reggie Bush is a runt, and anyone with any sense knew he wouldnt make it as a 20-carry a game back. He's a change of pace back who needs to learn to run deeper routes and how to pass block to even come close to living up to his hype.
ReplyDeleteMendenhall has the size and frame to carry the rock 30 times a game, and is inhumanly fast. He may turn out to be a bust, but I doubt it. He will be the second back drafted, probably in the top 10 of the first round. Him and McFadden are as close to a sure thing as there is.
Just my opinion. I was wrong about Elroy Harris, Michael Black, and Marquis Weeks (I thought they all were gonna make it), but I was right about Sanders and Smith and Corey Dillon. I guess I'm right only about half the time...
-SlaveToTheBusinessman
Just like I said...Its a 50/50 proposition, so why trade up? And I think a lot of people thought Reggie Bush was going to be good, its easy to say "anybody with any sense would have known" now, but before that draft, I think most of us would have taken him.
ReplyDeleteJust by watching the video I can tell right off that Laws is not a TR CHARACTER GUY. He is too cocky for TR's liking. Can anyone say Jeremy Stevens? I know that he is a major talent and could do wonders for any team he plays for but I just don't see TR picking up this guy. Let's face it. With the quality players already on this team; as far as character is concerned, it will only do detriment to the team to draft this overconfident, conceited individual.
ReplyDeleteI would have to say I would have taken Bush over Mario Williams. But if I'd had the first pick that year, Id have traded down.
ReplyDeleteMy 50% would get me fired from even the Raiders, which is why I'm a fan not a scout.
I still wanna see mendenhall in a hawk uniform...
-SlaveToTheBusinessman
he is way to small for a DT. i personally think we take pat simms in the second.
ReplyDeleteI'm not willing to give up what it would cost to trade up for a guy like Mendenhall (after already signing a 26 year old Jones). It would cost at least a 1 and 2 to move up 10-12 spots and I don't think it would be worth it to grab one RB (granted, he's a stud) when we could have a DT and DE with those other two picks instead.
ReplyDeletebk
this post is about Laws. Why are you guys talking about reggie bush and RB's when this whole thing is about DT's and one in particular. sheesh you guys seems as though this is an open discussion type of forum.
ReplyDeleteI love Laws, would love to see him in Hawks blue.
ReplyDeleteLaws is no Mendenhall. Implied but not stated. Ok Dirtyhawk?
ReplyDeleteI would rather have Simms if we must pick a defensive player. Although if I know Ruskell, he's gonna pick another CB or a WR just to freak everyone out...I like a couple of the CB's, and Trufant is being a bitch, and Sweed looks like a nice Moss/Jurevicious combo...
-SlaveToTheBusinessman
hawkfaninOklahoma how is he too small?
ReplyDeleteHe's basically the same height as Glenn Dorsey and Sedrick Ellis, the top 2 D Tackles in the draft?
I can just picture him next to Mebane creating havoc. High energy, didn't seem too cocky to me, confident in his abilities. 112 tackles at DT, that's just silly. He's a monster, I don’t know if he’s worth a 1st rounder but I wouldn't be disappointed with this pick.
ReplyDeleteYung Hawk
laws be tall but he be not hefty. i take dumps that weigh more.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if he's too small at 6' and half an inch, but at 280 he's a bit light. Terrill is currently the only sub-300lb DT on the roster and he's listed at 295.
ReplyDeleteMebane and Tapp are both listed at 6'1". I'd like to see a bit more height on the d-line.
Scout.com has him listed as the 8th best DT in the draft; I don't know if he's worth a 1st round pick but I would be happy to give him a go. Definitely seems like high-motor material.
Since it is a little slow right now, how about something else to discuss. I know this might not be the popular choice here but how about drafting Owen Schmitt-FB W.Virginia in the 4th or 5th round. If we are really trying to improve our running game, a young stud FB would help!! Look what Mack did here, Neal did for LT and so on. I would love to see this guy at Quest blowing up LB's as J. Jones is running into the secondary!! God I can't wait for the season to start again.
ReplyDeleteThanks Michael for this site, it is by far the best.
Jeff
the ND website has him listed at 296, Dorsey is listed at 299.
ReplyDeleteIs weight/height etc. aren't a big deal, Laws is an exceptional talent.
joey c., good call on Laws' height. Everyone called him short so I had never checked, but it turns out he's a just a bit taller than Ellis. Laws measured in at 6006 and Ellis was 6004 at the combine.
ReplyDeletedirtyhawk, I'm curious about why you think that video shows a character concern. I see a confident young guy who's not lying when he says he's one of the best tackles this year.
I think Owen Shmitt is a badass mutha@#$~! I would love to see the Hawks land him, one way or another. Im not sure if the dude can block in the NFL, but he runs like the white Christian Okoye, and he bent 15 facemasks in college. Thats good enough for me!
ReplyDeleteWherever that dude lands, I will be rooting for him.
-SlaveToTheBusinessman
I think the scout.com stats are taken from the combine, and for what it's worth they have Dorsey listed at 313.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he's a great talent - you don't start at ND and not be a talent. I just wonder if he's a good fit here. I agree that height doesn't define the position, but the bulk does matter. And even at 280, he's carrying some pudge, from looking at the video.
I know the hawks d is built for speed, but the dt position needs to be bulky enough to hold up blocks and allow the rest of the defense to do their thing.
Its probably all moot; TR will end up taking a WR, QB and LB the first day anyway...
Does anyone think the Hawks should be looking more at DEs than DTs? That seems like more of a need to me.
At least he didn't talk about himself in the third person all the time like Koren Robinson did and Fred Smoot when they came out. That was arrogant and they were punks. I don't get that sense from laws.
ReplyDelete-PaulySINM
LoneStarHawk, my comment on his weight was actually directed at anonymous who said he's taken dumps bigger than Laws, I was just trying to show him that weight isn't a huge issue.
ReplyDeleteYour weight numbers are probably correct, team websites aren't very accurate.
Knowing where we are at with Trufant, and assuming they will still be far apart on draft day, can Ruskell afford to not take a CB in the first?
ReplyDeleteOr do we just keep franchising Trufant every year? That is going to get spendy and other teams are going to pay big bucks for Trufant on the open market.
-PaulySINM
joey c. laws is labled a tweener not big enough for DT not fast enough for a DE. that bis the scouting report not my opinion.
ReplyDeletepersonally i like dre moore better
taller bigger and faster. pat simms is also very good, and not one of them is a first round pick.
i show on all the boards stewart falling to us in the first and i hope that is our pick.
"weight isn't a huge issue"
ReplyDeleteNow, that's funny.
No worries; we're just talking hypothetically around here.
And I agree, a decent CB has to be factored in. Who knows where, though.
I should probably restate that. Obviously it's an issue, if you're a DT and you weigh 210 you're probably gonna have a tough time against NFL guards, no matter how good you are.
ReplyDeleteMy point is/was that Laws should not be heavily downgraded because of his weight. He put up good numbers for 3 years at a quality football program (minus 2007, but Laws was still good) and he did it against quality competition.
So what if he's a little underweight? Vernon Davis might be the most physically gifted player in the NFL and he's been awful for 2 seasons. On the flip side Wes Welker probably wouldn't get drafted if he was in this years class, yet the guy had a huge year for the Pats (and yes I realize Tom Brady helps.)
I show his weight at 304 on one draft site and 301 on another, so I am not sure where 280 came from, but it seems like they are understating it.
ReplyDeleteweight is a huge issue at DT along with strength and speed. law is 20lbs lighter,3inches shorter, slower and not as strong as moore.
ReplyDeletemike, saw 2 sites with him listed between 280-290.
ReplyDeleteHere is an awesome article on Laws courtesy of Fieldgulls.com.
ReplyDeletehttp://fieldgulls.com/story/2008/3/18/161657/486#commenttop
i guess the point i am trying to make is not one of the three i mentioned warrants better than a second round pick.
ReplyDeletenfl.com has the combine results at:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nfl.com/combine/players
and he is listed at 297. If the official combine numbers are used that gives you an apples to apples comparison with other DT on that day. One wold assume the players would be at their optimum weight for the combine. At least th combine wieghts would be unbiased I would think.
-PaulySINM
HawkfaninOK, you can most likely forget about Sims or Moore, because Sims quit the team for a while at one point and Moore is known for taking plays off and has a questionable work ethic at best. Those type of players don't do so hot in Seahawk locker room these days.
ReplyDeleteWow that was a good write up, cheers John Morgan!
ReplyDeleteI think I furnished the 280 from Scout.com
ReplyDeleteThat's on me.
Laws weighed 304 at his pro day. The link is right here.

And who ever takes dumps bigger than that, I have only one thing to say....OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI didn't think he was cocky at all - cocky would of been him saying he was the best tackle in the draft, no question. I don't see how he isn't a TR guy; especially if he is "undersized", this just makes him more motivated to work hard and succeed. Remind anyone of Kelly Jennings?
ReplyDeleteHe had 3 blocked kicks on a shitty defense with no other playmakers. I think he's the real deal, his game film is pretty impressive.
Plus his favorite band is Modest Mouse. Laws should be a Hawk :)
dre moore is fast enough to play DE thou and big enough to clog the middle. draft him to be a rotational guy for debth at DT and DE. if you could get him in the 3-4round it would be a value pick.
ReplyDeleteI like Trevor Laws a lot but only if we can trade down into the early 2nd round and pick him up.
ReplyDeleteA good alternative I think would be Carlton Powell out of Va-Tech.
-Coach B
While I had Laws as our second rounder in a another thread here yesterday, obviously some people are not aware of the difference between a DT and a DT and the DT's.
ReplyDeleteLaws is not a stopper or a plugger.
He is a decent sized guy with a lot of lateral speed as well as quickness.
He's more like Darby than anyone else we've had here recently, but with a bit more height.
It was my understanding that Laws interview with the Hawks went well.
He is a Ruskell kind of guy because he has consistently improved his game and is smart and is not an "I,I,I,I,I, guy" But, then again, his team was not exactly heaped in sweetness, strength, and superlatives.
I don't know where in the world Dirtyhawk came up with a comparison to Jeramy Stevens.
Why? How? When? Where? What?????
Because he's "cocky"? Wrong kind to compare Dirty.
Okie, Dre Moore will probably be gone earlier than you suspect because he is a natural NT, and there aren't a quality bunch of guys coming out for those running a 3-4.
We've already got 6 DT's on the roster, but it is possible we could select two in the draft, a plugger and a speed guy.
Laws as a first rounder?
No way.
Another reason I would like to trade down for an additional second or third
Yes to Owen Schmitt, but no way he lasts until our fourth round. He's at the top of my list as our third.
Dre Moore, Maryland
ReplyDeleteHeight: 6-4. Weight: 305.
Projected 40 Time: 4.82.
Combine 40 Time: 4.88.
Benchx225: 31. Vertical .
Projected Round: 1-2.
Dre Moore was the talk of the combine at defensive tackle, as his blazing 40 (4.88) was very impressive, considering his 305-pound frame. Thirty-one reps of 225 pounds wasn't too shabby either.
Moore played out of his mind against West Virginia. Steve Slaton simply couldn't run in Moore's direction, as the senior defensive tackle was in the Mountaineers' backfield the majority of the plays. He really improved his draft stock.
That 4.82 is not a misprint. Moore, who excels at stopping the run and getting to the quarterback, is a workout warrior. He'll bench 225 pounds at least 30 times. He has also notched a 34-inch vertical in the past. An expected, excellent combine may get Moore into the first round.
