If You Have to Pay Top Dollar....

...Might as well get what you pay for. This is just an interesting debate point that has been in my mind since yesterday, so I thought I would see what all of you thought.

With the Raiders trading so much, and spending so much, to get DeAngelo Hall, they may repeal the franchise tag on Nnamdi Asomugha. The only had 6 mil in cap space before this deal, allegedly.

In my mind, he is a top flight shut down corner. He literally takes away one side of the field. He was thrown at only a ridiculous 19 times last year (approx figure).

Things would change if he hits the market. One, someone with skill to match the top money becomes available and it puts the Hawks in an interesting position. They could repeal the franchise tag on Trufant and put two corners on the market when most of the money is gone and use the space to go hard after Nnamdi. Also, they could start negotiating with him to force Tru to either sign his tender or do a long term deal. The third thing they could do is go hard after Asomugha and hope they get a deal done before Trufant figures out what happened, and then repeal his tender.

If Ruskell believes that Marcus will never agree to a deal in the lesser tier range, this may be a smart play. Ruskell would actually be getting a corner with the skill to match what Marcus thinks he is worth. I would think this is a possibility, rather paying more than he is comfortable for Trufant. I like Marcus a lot, but if Al Davis repeals the franchise tag off of Asomugha, he may create a new source of leverage for the Hawks.

  1. Wow, this could be one of the best things to happen to the hawks this off-season!! I would love to have Asomugha in a hawk jersey. I would love to have them both, but at least having the leverage would be amazing. Once again, great scouting Michael. Lovin the write-ups.

  2. Nice find. Keep up the good work, Michael.

Much like ponying up the cash to reward good play like we did with Alexander, I think Tru deserves a good, but not great deal. We knew Shaun would not play out that contract when it was signed. I think it helps players' morale and motivation to play at a higher level.

Although too much loyalty can be shown to players (C.Gray?), it's loyalty that can be what causes a player to want to stay with our team rather than bolt for greener pastures or warmer climates. Our climate can prevent us from landing FAs like Dielman last year, who complained of the rain...

Asomugha would be a fine replacement, but I think we need to work hard to keep Tru.

There are times we need to overpay players to come here (see: climate), while teams like Oakland overpay because the are not winning.

  3. Asomugha...a seahawk...you guys are dreaming.

I have a feeling tru will sign soon.

  4. This also could work backwards for the Hawks. If Asomugha gets paid it could make Tru want more money and not willing to negotiate down. Then we have to hope for the Lance Briggs syndrome and hope he resigns next year, but it is a different situation because everybody wants a good corner.

  5. He won't be a 'Hawk. I wish he would and I'd certainly rather have him than Trufant. I don't care if Tru is a better person, he's not a shutdown CB. Besides, it's not like Asomugha is a criminal (or is he?).

Maybe we can send the Raiders our 2nd round pick for him and then trade Trufant and receive a 2nd rounder. That would be nice and probably the only possible scenario in which he could end up a Seahawk.

  7. For me I agree with Clark Judge that it is hard to make sense out of anything the raiders are doing.

    http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/10709486 it is

It appears Al Davis has went mad and is paying double what the market rate is according to some GM's (see article above)

It is tough trying to figure out what is going to happen next in a mad house, but it is interesting conjecture I suppose.

  11. sorry the end of the video is not so PC and I personally hate the term they use, but before it goes to the baseball song, it is good

  12. Trufant, back on his natural side another year and tagged, he will be motivated to show the world that he IS a shutdown corner, (although that may not be the case), and we can expect a great year from him, as he's looking for his next big payday. It's nice to think the Hawks at least have a corner that most QBs at least have to think twice in throwing at him.

  14. I'm a little worried that this whole situation could hurt the Hawks more than help them. First off, if Al Davis trades for Hall and signs him to a new contract, it could be worth more than Sanuel's, considering how he has been dishing out money this off-season. If the Raiders then revoke the tag on Asomugha, I could see him demanding even more money than Hall on the open market. Assuming there is a team willing and able to give him what he wants at this point in FA, I worry that this whole situation could drive up the market value of cornerbacks and make it harder to get a deal done with Tru.

  15. They have got to get rid of Tru and his contract. Take a pick or a player for him. We need the money to get Lofa and Eddie signed. Tru is overrated.

  16. Yeah the whole reason we are having a problem with Trufant's contract was the overpaid clements deal then the overpaid samuel deal that inflated the market. Corners via the draft are looking better and better just because their free agent contracts are so high.

  18. When one person pays out the azz it is overpaying, when two do it, it sets the market. Guards would be a good example.

  19. They should get what ever they can for Tru and let him go. It's Shaun all over again, play over the top for the big contract and then get over paid and not play hard, or care ever again. If they don't see that writing on the wall, they should be run out of town on a rail...You don't pay a guy who had one great season that kind of money, I don't care how good 'He' thinks he is...

  20. I would argue that Trufant is a much different type of personality than Shaun

  21. I would argue that Tru has definitely had more than one good year. Every year since he was drafted he has played solid and consistent, but just didn't put up big INT numbers. Last year he made more plays and got the stats, taking the step from solid corner to great one. He isn't a shut-down corner, but he fits great in our defensive system and always has. I do think that $9 mil per year is a little high for his services, but it's not completely unreasonable. It's less that Samuel, and I would argue that Samuel is a little overrated...one of those "right place at the right time" kind of guys, who has always had good players around him and has had coaches that have put him in a position to make plays. To be honest, I prefer Tru's all-around, consistent play to Samuel's big numbers.

Here is an excert from Frank Hughes at TNT regarding Tru: "...I asked Ruskell if it behooves the Hawks to let him get paid the franchise tag number this year and prove to them that he is indeed a consistent Pro Bowl corner, rather than paying him off a season that could have been a fluke. Ruskell said no, they know that Trufant is a very good corner, last year was not a fluke, but, again, in their evaluation of the position, he is a second-tier corner, not the shutdown corner."

After the '06 season came to a close, I also recall Holmegren commmenting that Tru was the most solid and consistent player on defense that year. All I have heard from the coaches regarding Tru has been very positive throughout his career. I think the team would be well-served to pay him a little less than a shut-down corner and lock him up. I really doubt we'll see his production decline after signing a large contract. If anything, I see him turning the corner and becoming a pro-bowler for years to come. And besides, he's a local boy and I just can't imagine him wearing any other uniform. It just wouldn't be right.

  22. Just b/c Hutch helped set the market for guards, doesn't mean he wasn't worth it.

He was worth all $7 million (except it's not us giving it to him) whereas Tru does not seem to be worth all $9.5 million of his tender.

Timmy overpays for a guy like Dion Grant, and yet people are mad at Tru for wanting to get overpaid. Tru and Grant are good, but one is overpaid and one wants to be overpaid.

  25. Interesting idea Mike. I wonder if Asomouga would want to play here? I think there could be a chance that we could land him, but I doubt the FO would go for it. I think they like Trufant, but I think there is a slightly different element that hasn't been touched upon.
If the Raiders lift the tag, it wouldn't be for a couple days, maybe a week or two. In that time I think the negotiating with Trufant will go one of two ways; either really bad, or they will work out a deal. If the contract talks start taking a turn for the worse, then we could go after Asomouga if the talks look like they are really not going to go anywhere. A back-up plan.
