More Tight End Talk

Pro Football Weekly has updated their Seahawks info with a little piece speculating a bit on the upcoming draft. The article says that the Hawks consider tight end the teams biggest need.

It also lists the team needs as O-Tackle, D-Tackle, and Running back. I am glad they didn't say WR, but I really think taking a tackle high would be a mistake.

Either way, it would appear they agree with most of us that the Hawks will take BPA in the first from one of those four positions. Also, it ever so subtly mentioned that the team would consider Dustin Keller a reach at that spot.

  1. I say that TE is still our biggest need. I do however, think we will end up picking up Stewart. I think Ruskell looks at the TE position in the draft and doesn't see an abundance of playable talent. RB is probably the first pick and if there is anyone left we go TE with the second pick or maybe DT and we let Putzier try to prove his worth and we mold some of the other TE's we have on the roster.

  2. So assuming that Jonathan Stewart and Fred Davis (or Dustin Keller from the article) are all available....

    Who to pick??

  3. I would say the Hawks pick Jonathan Stewart even if all three guys are available. TE is a tough position to draft, especially for the Hawks becasue they need a guy who can be a strong blocker and a guy thats fast enough to get virtical. After having a guy like Stevens that suffers from dropitis I think the TE's hands are a little more important to the team than his blocking abilities.

  4. I know I've jumped on the Keller bandwagon and believe that he would provide the biggest spark to this offense....

however I've been watching some tape on Davis and while I thought he was okay....I'm starting to truely see why he was the consensus #1 TE. Keller is awesome and super athletic on offense....but Davis just has this presence about him when he is running routes and getting the ball. He makes things happen and really appears to be deceptively athletic.

You see Keller and instantly see him pull moves and are like WOW that was crazy.

You see Davis...and he just kind of somehow manages to get extra yards or break a tackle...and you say...sweet...allright, good job. But if you go back and watch the tape, he does a tons of little amazing things that allow him to get seperation, catches, broken tackles, extra yards, etc. They may not look spectacular like Keller, but they are deceptively effective.

Makes me excited to get Davis if we do infact pick him.

  5. Keller really doesn't fit this offense, as much as people are saying at least. If you watch the Hawks, they don't do a lot of things to ensure a free release for the TE. Usually they are lined up on the end of the line. That is where Davis' size and strength will be important.

Keller will thrive in an offense where he splits out in the slot and lines up in the backfield. Things that allow him to get out in a route with out being touched.

  6. If we need a talented TE, why is Fred Davis even a part of this conversation, I would not take him with anything higher than a 5th round pick. He is short, had one barely adequate year in college and is suddenly the next Tony Gonzoles, BULL.. he is already has the "BUST" stenciled on his butt, waiting for a team name to be put in front of it.

  7. I'm not sure about all of the excitement I've seen around here for TE Dustin Keller.

At the combine, one of the NFL Network guys said he asked Keller's agent why Keller didn't play in any of the Senior Bowl type games.

It was reported the agent held him out because teams run base offenses in those games and Keller can't be used that way. He said he was more of an H-Back or you would have to split him out, etc.

Well, we line our TE right next to the T predominately. We already have an amazing slot receiver. Keller's speed advantage is lost if he's running against a nickel back anyway. We have enough trouble running the ball without a liability as a blocker at that position.

If you ask me, he is a too-small TE and a too-slow, less-agile WR.

  8. we gotta get Jonathan Stewart, I know that questions raised with his surgery, but if he's still available when the hawks can pick, he will be a steal, he is a assuredly a future crowd pleaser and hometown hero that we would be lucky to have

Any guesses on the 12:30 press conference?

  10. I agree with this article regarding our needs. I've seen this blog say we need a Safety - I don't agree with that. D-Grant and Russell have plenty of years left in them.

Great Blog - your constant ability to find these articles about the hawks makes this my first stop for hawk news. Keep it up!!!

  14. What is the deal with Mike Green? Seems we have Grant, Russ, Green, and CB/S Babs for that position...maybe we release Green?

  15. My guess is that they are announcing multiple things. Maybe both Tru and Shaun. Hopefully it has nothing to do with Holmgren.

  16. If it was Ruskell alone it would be Tru news but with Ruskell and Holmgren together it is most likely Shaun news.

  17. I like Green, he hasn't gotten much of a chance, but I think he is a very good back up. We also have Wallace from UW. Plenty of depth at Safety, no need to draft a Safety in my opinion.

  18. Green makes 1.3 million. C.J. Wallace, anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  19. We all know how important it is to have experience at Safety. I say we keep Green - but 1.3M seems high for a back up safety.

  20. i wonder what the press conference is about today with Seattle?

  21. It's screwed up on my computer too. I can only see the last three blogs.

  22. Hey mike, you do have a problem with the blog. I too can only see the last 5 (now) blog items, but the 5th one is just cutoff, and it's just blue space below it, no bottom footer, not even links to comment on the 5th post. Also there is no right side menu of items, just empty blue space. Everything is gone from over there too.

  23. I'd love to grab two defensive linemen in the first two rounds.

    DE/DT (in either order)

I remember our line getting tossed around like rag dolls against GB.

The third can net us a TE if one is available. I think old Jeb can be good enough for '08 so we don't have to reach if there isn't one good enough available. I'm not too impressed with the TE class this year.

I'm also not sure why we need an offensive tackle if we have the best left tackle in the NFL and one of the best right tackles in the NFL.

Plus, our back-up is thought of highly by the coaches. Sure, our LT is 34, but our RT is the LT of the future and the young back-up RT will be fine at RT one day.

Doesn't it seem like overkill to have 4 good tackles on the team? It's not like they rotate like defensive linemen do.

    bk

    I think our needs are...

    1. DT
    2. DE (we're f-ed if Kerney goes down)
    3. TE

  24. I like J-Stew, but the signing of JJ & TJ make RB a lesser priority this year, plus I like the value of Ray Rice.

Lock up BPA at DT/CB/OT in the first... why CB? so you can either trade Tru or drop him at the end of the year. He wants more money than he's worth.

    This coming from a Coug

Why not TE in RD 1? Because the draft is deep at TE and I don't see much of a variance in the top 5 TE available.
