S.A.- NFL DRAFT PREVIEW-Round 6

Alright...getting down to the nitty gritty. The Seahawk Addicts draft preview is moving into the sixth round. Obviously at this point, specialists such as kickers are included. No one at this point is guaranteed to make the team. I trended back towards skill position players because it seems Tim Ruskell likes to pick up skill players from good teams who dropped. I think that there could be some value in those type of picks this year. Anyway to see the sixth round chart....

First, Here are the links to the previous projections:

First Round...Second Round...Third Round....Fourth Round.

The theory I have used to make these selections is based on the vast (very little) knowledge I have acquired on Tim Ruskell. You can read a more detailed account in either of the first two projections.

Any way, here are the picks.

SEAHAWK ADDICTS 6th ROUND PICKS

Ali Highsmith-LB-LSU-5'11", 230 lbs, 5.0 40 yrd dash time does not equal high draft pick. However, if you watched this guy play for LSU he was all over the field. Clearly his heart and desire make him do things on the field that don't seem possible with his measurables, like when he ran Darren McFadden down from behind. He is versatile and can play at any LB position. He is a good leader and excels at rushing the passer from the LB position. That fits the Hawks scheme well. Also, at this point he is an excellent value.

Nick Hayden-DT- Wisconsin- It is kind of iffy if he will be available at this point, but it was a reach to take him in the fourth. If he is here expect the Hawks to have him high on their list. He is a hard worker and consistent over achiever. He is known to be dependable and durable. A little light at only 290 lbs, but makes up for it with hard work and good intangibles. They say he is more of a run stuffer than a penetrator, but he had 4.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss in his senior season.

Adrian Arrington-WR-Mich- I was already looking to include him, and then it was announced he was coming to Kirkland for a visit. I think Arrington totally fits the mold of picks like Courtney Taylor and Ben Obamanu. He had some character issues early in his time at Michigan, but he must pass the Hawks filters or they wouldn't be having him for a visit. His value is in his toughness over the middle. He is 6'3" and provides a nice target to throw to. Also was a beast in the red zone, with 5 td passes, despite Manningham often being the preferred target. His best game was his last game in the Capitol One Bowl vs Fla.

Hussian Abadullah-S-Washington St.-There are probably some of you who can tell us more about Abdullah than any scouting report, but here is some of his qualities that the Hawks will like. First off, his bloodlines. His brother is a safety for the Broncos, so he knows what it means to be a pro. Second, he plays with attitude, which is important for a safety. He has decent hands and ball skills and makes plays at key times. Also, was a standout on special teams at WSU, so no question about his value as a young player in the NFL.

Mike Hart-RB-Michigan- Mike Hart has a great college resume, yet some people think he will be lucky to hear his name called on draft day. That is how bad his combine was. Also, it is just too deep a draft class. However, the Hawks will love what he brings to the table, and if he slips this far they may take a flier on him. He is tough as nails, runs hard, attacks the middle of line, and NEVER (except his bowl game) fumbles. He went three years with out a fumble before his last game. He is an adequate receiver and the fact that he doesn't have good speed won't bother the Hawks because they have a perfect compliment in Julius Jones.

Taylor Mehlhaff-K-Wisconson- Not too much can be said, except we need a kicker. He has the strongest leg of the bunch. He is used to kicking in inclement weather. He has a good record on kicks 50 yds or longer. He is a hard worker and if he is available here there is no reason not to take him. Especially if the Hawks don't have a kicker, or have Olindo Mare for him to compete with.

Ok folks... One more to go...or at least until the supplemental picks are announced. Although i am still not sure why Ruskell thinks the Hawks are getting one. Anyway...Now I can watch basketball tonight and know that the heavy lifting for the day is done. Hope you enjoy...

  1. Good preview Mike. I especially like the note about Mehlhaff - kicking in inclement weather is a definite plus for kicking at Qwest. Very simple but for some reason it didn't cross my mind.

You should keep a comparison of actual picks to your predictions, just to see how accurate your mock was(for fun).

  2. I think a guy like Joe Mays (ILB)out of North Dakota St. would be a good addition here. He could back up Lofa while making Special Team contributions.

  3. I have stayed away from small school players simply because Ruskell doesn't draft them. Look at his record, he takes bcs school guys exclusively.

  4. Wow - Mike Hart is still available in the 6th. If we have not taken a RB I think he would be worth a 6th rounder but like mark mentioned earlier Mehlhaff could be valuable at Qwest.

    Good preview.

Thanks for what you are doing Mike. You bring a lot of passion that is missing from many of the other Seahawk blogs.

  5. Mike, what do you think about Jacob Hester, I love the way the guy plays. For the last 2 years he was on a team surrounded with
1st round picks, yet he always seemed to be the one that made the big plays.

  6. Forgot about that Mike. It's too bad that he doesn't look at some small school talent. Kevin Boss would have been a nice grab last year.

  7. Coach B- I agree, I think he is somewhat missing the boat on the smaller school guys, however, for every Boss, there is a Michael Allen, the guy from Withworth everybody wanted who we haven't heard from since. At least guys who play at big schools play against a lot of future NFLers, so my guess is maybe Ruskell feels the jump up in games speed/competition isn't as daunting.

As for Hester, I think he is too much of a tweener for the Hawks. He is kind of like Brian Leonard. He is a tailback in a smaller fullbacks body. The Hawks most likely want a tailback or a fullback, not a hybrid. But who knoows?? If he is hanging around in the late rounds, they make take a chance. They already have a speed back in Jones.

  8. Still right with you, MS.

My guess is the Seahawks will do something to get a fifth, maybe for a 2009 selection or a trade for MoMo or ....

But let's go to the sixth.

Taylor Mehlhaff is my first choice. He will not make it through to our seventh and he appears to be the real deal.

If we haven't picked up Owen Schmitt or Peyton Hillis then we need a Jacob Hester. A "tweener" you call him ... maybe Mora is gonna like him more than Holmgren.

Safety Jamie Silva plays way over his head and is always around the ball. Did you see this guy in the Shrine game? This here fella is a Ruskell type for sure.

RB Thomas Brown is an all everything ... but he is only 5'9" and this might cause him to drop to the sixth. I hope so. If we haven't snagged an RB in the first two rounds this is the guy.

And, finally, I would consider a WR. Marcus Monk. This fella is going to make some team seem brilliant as a late pick.
    Marcus Monk, who woulda thunk?

Looking forward to your seventh rounders.

And maybe a contest with each entrant picking 5 names for each round for the Hawks. There's plenty of time for a couple dozen people to jump in.

And maybe a spin off contest to see who has the most picks in the given round by any team.

    Lotsa possibilities.

    Honorable Mentions?
Maybe a can of pomade for everybody who gets more rounds right than Kiper, or a bag of mojo's for anyone who can top Rang.

Hey, anybody can do it with a little homework.

  9. Yeah, right.

Five minutes after I posted about Melhaff being our "must" sixth round pick they sign Mare.

So toss Melhaff. They will undoubtedly bring in a UFA to compete for the job.

Add C John Sullivan as my replacement pick.

  10. Mike I can tell you are a Michigan man...flat out gushing about Hart. Just think you like a team that shares the state with the Huskies. Husky victories over the Blue are some of my best memories as a kid.
Nowadays all I have are memories of the winning tradition, I guess Michigan came out on top there!

Let's have a contest for the draft!

    Efrin Herrera

  11. Arrington is a better talent than Monk while still just as solid a "Tall" red zone threat. Mike Hart is a poor mans Ray Rice. And we have a FB for the future...we will not take Jacob Hester or Owen schmidt unless the latter FALLS a ways past his value. Not a chance w/ Hester tho. Reminds me of Keller as a hybrid and too small for his position. I know its the 6th but ill repeat KELLER is an H-back not a TE. Chad Reuter is a poor mans Mike Mayock and they are both Morons!!

  12. Phildurt... I like your creative ideas for the contest, the only problem is that I have to keep track of all those names some how. I am thinking something simpler.

And, I am only kind of a Michigan man. I was born in Ann Arbor, but it is really my Dad who likes Michigan. However I was at the one Rose Bowl were UM beat the Huskies, maybe 90'.

The reason I like Mike Hart is because he as a damn good football player who is going to fall because he doesn't have 4.5 speed. Also, he fits what the Hawks need, someone who gets tough yards between the tackles.

  13. Mike-

Just a thought, but with all of this talk of J Stew dropping and the possibility of him dropping to us. It does seem that there is a decent chance TR will pick up a RB on day one. So if that happens and Mo gets traded, how about a mock 5th round? Would like to see where we could go there. Just a thought
