Tim Ruskell Favors Stewart

Profootballweekly has a rumor article called whispers that comes out every 5 to 7 days. This weeks, posted this morning contains two whispers about the Seahawks.

Here is what they say....
  • Our Seahawks sources tell us the team couldn’t cut beleaguered RB Shaun Alexander right now, even if they wanted to, because he is still recovering from surgery on his left wrist. If the team released Alexander without some sort of injury settlement, the door would be open for an injury grievance, which would tie up even more money under the team’s already-tight salary cap.
  • There are rumblings that Seahawks president of football operations/GM Tim Ruskell absolutely loves Orgeon RB Jonathan Stewart — perhaps enough to trade up from the 25th spot in the first round to land him.
First, Shaun. If they wanted to reach a settlement they would. Kevin Jones just got cut with an ACL injury. The Seahawks are just in no rush to do anything, and unless Shaun starts whining about it, they will stand pat till they have to make a move.

Second, Jonathan Stewart. I hope this is true. I absolutely love J-Stew too. However, I naturally question anything that comes out about who loves who this time of year because most of it is smokescreen.

Either way, maybe now the Seahawks won't have to trade up and they can still get him. The only team that has a back in place that would also be willing to wait is AZ, but they need a CB, and if they took a 1st round RB, they would cut Edge to create cap space, so I think they would prefer someone who is ready day one.

Thanks Misfit, for pointing this out. END

  3. How insightful is Draft Daddy? It looks like their most recent mock has J-Stew out of the first round completely. Or did I miss something?

I've seen other mocks that have him going to Houston and, living in H-town, I gotta say I don't see it. First they just signed Chris Brown because their new OL coach is familiar with him from his Colorado days. But more importantly, I really think the Texans will either take an OT or a CB now that they've added a RB in free agency; just a gut feeling. Dunta Robinson may never play at his previous level and they need depth in the secondary anyway.

I agree, you can't take anything seriously in March (with all the smokescreens blooming), but I think grabbing Stewart is less improbable than I did a couple weeks ago.

  4. Usually they are pretty good, Lonestar, but that Mock looks like it was kind of random. I doubt the Patriots are taking Mendenhall at 7, especially considering the lost their 3rd starting DB this week, but i suppose anything is possible right

  6. Michael, it looks like your blogger draft pick could come true as well.

Stewart's and Merling's stock dropping is just what we need to nab one of em.

  7. I would prefer passing on Stewart and going with OL, TE, DT in the first, second and third, and not necessarily in that order..

There will be another hb available next year at draft time, with just as much ability as Stewart, and without the durability and toughness issues (we know how that story ends).

That said, I do love that he is from Fort Lewis.. Not that being a hometown guy guarantees he will stick around or give us a discount (see Tru) but it never hurts..

  8. As much as we need a tight end, or even o line help, i am all for picking the best available, and stewart would be just that. I hope that we dont trade up to get him though. I dont like throwing away draft picks just to move up a couple spots, especially with Ruskell in charge of the draft witch we all know he does very well with!

  9. BMsnyder...

You don't just pass on people because 'there might be another one next year'.

If Stewart is the best player available at that jucture (and he probably will be if he drops to no.25) then you take him. You don't reach on another position.

  10. MS, this site is wonderful.

But you gotta relax about Stewart and Mendenhall. You are not a windshield wiper.

You're up to the minute which other media can't seem to understand, or pay to do so.

We move to #19 and swap with the Eagles to beat out the raft of teams between 20 and 25 which might take him.

I do not see how we can pass on him if he's there at 19 unless this sprain or turf toe of whatever is really scary to other teams.

I say we take him anyway.

I've just about given up on Mendenhall falling to #2 5, but strange things might happen with Houston and the Cardinals, among others.

I've got to withdraw from the draft until mid-April. He requires way too much hypothecating.

  11. I have to agree with stimqpqb1 any scenario that ends up with the Hawks getting J-Stew I love! However, annually, the player I believe will most benefit the Hawks, ends up elsewhere! (Two years ago, for example, I dreamed of Antonio Cromartie and thought they might choose Mathias Kiwanuka, Johnathan Joseph, or Donte Whitner. Last year, I dreamed of Greg Olsen or Justin Harrell and thought they would select Ben Patrick - with their second round choice. Who didn't think that was a possibility?) What I am learning is Rob Rang earns his buck and the draft remains a shot in the dark.

  12. Maybe you wanna be nice to Rang because he is a local.

But last year, with a handful of names for each pick, he only got 1 out of 7 Hawk selections.

  13. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the best Hawk related news I've heard in a long while.

Can you imagine a tandem of Stewart and Jones with Duckett coming in on 3rd and short? Try and tell me thats not a top 5 backfield in the NFL

I'm so pumped right now haha.

  14. I wonder if Stewart's toe surgery effects his attractiveness in the draft. He might fall to #25.

I agree you don't trade up for him, but if he's there at #25 you take him as BPA. Otherwise (broken record) take BPA TE/DT.

  15. Being able to go BPA is a luxury.. and it's a luxury we don't have..

Stewart is injury prone and goes down easy.. do we want that?
