Tim Ruskell Scorecard Update

There seemed to be quite a ground swell of support for Leroy Hill to be established as a exemplary move worth of a "5". It has been changed.

Also, Leonard Weaver being signed as an undrafted free agent has been added, and assigned a "2"

This now makes 2005 the greatest season in the history of any general manager. No wonder it is so hard for this guy to please people. He set the bar waaaaaaaaaaaay too high his first year.

Anyway, if you want to check it out, the link is now in the right hand column.

  1. He made some nice additions on the cheap (especially Jurevicius) but the fact of the matter is that most of the team he inherited in '05 was brought in by other people.

What about Holmgren drafting Hutch and trading for Hasselbeck?

What about Dennis Erickson drafting Walter Jones?

If you look at why we played in the Super Bowl, those three guys mentioned above were big reasons.

The MVP that year - much of his credit is due to the Walt/Hutch combo (Robbie was solid, Grey was functional, and nobody could have known Lock would do so well at RT, Hannam did a great job of sealing the edges, and JJ was a monster blocking outside). Only one of the players mentioned was because of Ruskell.

I'm not saying he sucks, lets just give where credit is also due and that's with some of the previous regimes. Aside from Hutch, I'd say he's done okay.

  2. And who can forget about the lead blocking from Mack in '05? I don't know how the heck I just did!

Lofa sure as heck was a nice pick-up though for the '05 squad (and Hill, not Jamie Sharper).

  3. Michael.. a little bit off the subject but can you explain why I never see the Hawks being listed anywhere as either looking at a veteran player or going to see a college draftee, even on a pro day when you would think all the teams would be represented?

  4. I have reported the Hawks presence at pro days and lots of different stories of them being interested in veteran players.

They supposedly have interest in Justin Hartwig, and possibly still Caleb Miller.

I think one reason you haven't heard much, is first, they have been working hard on things close to home, like the RB's and Marcus Trufant.

Also, I know that Ruskell trusts his area scouts more than some. He doesn't want the season long scouting work to be influenced by a one day work out, so I don't think they put a ton of stock in pro days.

That said, it also probably goes unnoticed when the Seahawks are there, more so than a Dallas, or NY team.

  5. Good point, Mike. Ruskell made all the right moves in '05, but its not been so easy since. He did inherit a great team though.

  6. Any news on Justin Hartwig? or any other players?

  7. Another off-topic question, Michael:

How do you think DeAngelo Hall's huge contract will affect our dealings with Tru? Oakland is out of control. Maybe another 'lost his mind' comment needed...

I've seen it listed unofficially at about 7 years 70 mil with 20 mil SB.

  8. Hartwig was just in KC and PIT is also reportedly interested in him. I hope we are.

  9. I smell 1st round cornerback.....

I think it will affect what Marcus wants... I don't think it will effect what Ruskell will give.

At some point Marcus is going to have to decide between playing in Seattle or a few million bucks.

  10. Hartwig would be a nice addition.

  11. That would make three conrnerbacks taken in the first two rounds in three years...Jennings, Wilson and the newby. Is it just me or does that trio not strike fear into the hearts of opposing WR's?!

Ruskell needs to pick better CB's if he's gonna keep spending early round picks. So far it looks like Ruskells drafting weakness is picking mediocre CB's way too early.

  12. SlaveTTBM, The run on corners always seems to start before the hawks pick. Look at this years Mock drafts and it is the same. Unless they trade up they don't get a top flight CB. Trufant was the exception back when we weren't picking so low (picking low is a good thing in terms of success BTW).

  13. How can you judge that now?

    A) you don't know who the newbie is, but he won't need to play until next year.

    B) Wilson barely got to play anything but dime, and look how much Jennings improved from his 1st to 2nd year.

Marcus will play this year, but corners are just do damn expensive, pay rookie scale wages. Unless you want to let the LB's leave.

  14. Anonymous, Walter Jones came as a Randy Mueller trade at #6 overall as I remember, Erickon shouldn't get credit for him IMO. He traded for two 1st rounders that year as I remember.

  16. I still love this scorecard, but still think that the scores need to be judged against "replacement player" data or some such. Either that, or players that don't work out (even if picked up undrafted) need negative scores. Otherwise all you are saying is Weaver worked out, give him 2 points, Joe Schmoo didn't work out give him 0 points. I think if other teams bloggers ran this points schedule for their GM's they would probably score high too. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Ruskell supporter and a SeaHawks Addicts supporter but for these numbers to prove something, they need more structure.

  17. Re: Al Davis, I wonder if the court can order a "caretaker" for his team like they did for Britney spear's estate. I pity whoever the next head coach is for the raiders in the next few years. How come Davis has always been so stingy with coaches but now he is trowing money at FAs like it is water. Bizzaro!

  18. Really, Surfhawk, all it was intended to do was show the totality of the numerous smart decisions that have worked out, that never get mentioned by those who bring up one or two moves to discredit the man.

If an undrafted FA doesn't work out, that is neutral because he wasn't expected to. When you find one that sticks and is a projected starter, that is a good move.

I would bet bad teams have lots of negative draft picks, and negative signings that Ruskell wouldn't.

Think about how a Bengals fan would rate theirs?

  19. Another example would be if I did this for Bill Bavasi. He would get a negative number I bet... doesn't mean I a not a Mariners fan

  20. I honestly think that all these quiet decisions for veteran mins that were made make the measure of his talent evaluations. I'd rather hit more than I miss, in any sport.

OK - you win. Let's give Ruskell credit for bringing Walter Jones to the Seahawks.

  22. This new Hall contract from the senile Al Davis really sucks for us hoping Trufant signs soon.

While at least Tru is a good person and Hall is a complete moron, Trufant's talent isn't close to Hall's.

  23. Went to wikipedia to look up 1997 draft. We took shawn springs #3 overall and Walter Jones #6 overall. Itula Mili was injured and slipped to the 6th round. I remember Kiper thought Mili was the steal of the draft for later round picks.

Man, when is the last time someone had the #3 plus the #6 pick? Mueller was a wheeler dealer on that one. Can't remember what the trades were though. I wonder what kind of pick it is going to take to get Wlater Jones replacement in the next couple years.?

  24. Hey Dude Ruskell Came into a system that already had a draft board. Why don't you give the credit where it is due to the staff that was already there. I would say 06 and 07 reflects better his true talent evaluation ability. I wouldn't mind seeing this dude leave and Holmgren take over his sorry butt.

  25. Hey I hear the CB Ruskell Will pick will be in the 1st round and weigh 85 pounds wet and reach a whopping 4'9" tall.

  26. Who the Hell Drafted Sims?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yeah anon, I am sure Ruskell came on board in Feb 05' and said, hey you know what, there are two months till the draft, but screw it, take who ever you want, I am going on vacation.

Especially considering his expertise was the draft in Tampa and Atlanta.

  28. Great article on the Seattle PI with Holmgren making jokes at Ruskell cast off D-jack!

    http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/football/archives/134627.asp

Bottom line with Hutch that no one ever says is that like Josh Brown, he choose to leave. His agent told him the terms of the deal with the poison pill and he had to know there was no way the Hawks were going to guarantee that much money. Ruskel should have franchised him but the move was so random that even after it was upheald except for the screw you back to MIN with Nate no other team has used this tactic.
