Wyms, Darby, and Marinelli...Reunited?

Danny O'Neil has a report on his blog that says Ellis Wyms and Chuck Darby are scheduled to meet with Detroit next week. The obvious connection here is that the were both coached in Tampa by Detroit head coach Rod Marinelli. It seems that the Hawks have cleared some space now by cutting Ashworth.

The time might be now to move to keep some guys, if we need them.

Personally, I think that Darby is done. Big men with hurt knees who rely on speed over bulk and are on the wrong side of thirty, don't fare so well.

Wyms is a quality rotational guy. He plays both end and tackle. However, it seems to be in the Hawks plans to take another DT. Add that to the possibility, slim as it is, that Tubbs contributes, and there may not be space.

This has already been a tough year on the Hawks free agency wise. But no panic here, we improved the offensive line already, which was the biggest priority.

  1. this would be a good time to re mention "Red." I know some others have been raving about him on the blog. This guy simply plugs it up <75 yards a game (or something like that).I say in the 2nd or 3rd we draft a cork to fill the whole in the DL. Mike what is your opinion on 2rd and 3rd round picks for the DL?

  2. Kevin, once free agency dies down, i am going to start looking at the draft more. The hawks have several needs. They tend to choose for value. If a 1st round RB falls then DT in the 2nd or 3rd is possible. If the backs are gone, they may take one in the first. I am going to go position by position and talk about players the Hawks might take in each round, once all the picks are officially announced.

  3. Darby is a question mark with his knee injury/age, but he was a great player and leader in the clubhouse. If he leaves, he will be missed.

Wyms was a pretty nice surprise, and he's fairly young--plus, he is cheap! With the FA DL market so crazy this year, he might be expensive to replace.

    I hope they both stay...

  4. Yeah, I agree with JBSucks. I'd love to see us hold onto Wyms, he is a good backup who seemed to make plays when we needed them towards the end of last year. I like Darby, of course, but I can see him heading out and us not missing him much... still, since we can likely assume Tubbs will play in approximately 3 games it would be nice to hold onto the Darb-meister.

  5. The team will not miss Darby with Tubbs and Mebane as starters along with Bernard and Terril rotating in. Wymns is a dime-a-dozen. Actually Tripplett would we a nice upgrade for his spot in the rotation. The draft has some nice options as well, but as this is not a dire need (unless management thinks Tubbs is done/doomed), a DT will only be choosen if the value is completely right.

It would be nice to draft a solid DE late - like Dingle in the third or Johnston from Garner-Webb a little later.

  6. Red Bryant? If you like Marcus Tubbs knee problems you'll love this guy.

Ah, Wyms and Darby, the Sims and Womack of the defensive line. Oh, by all means spend money on those two.

  7. They are still reporting that Darby and Wyms are expected to show up in Detriot, which I guess means they haven't yet:

Seahawks defensive linemen Chuck Darby and Ellis Wyms are expected in this week. Both played in Tampa Bay when Detroit coach Rod Marinelli coached the defensive line.
