According to Mark Curnutte of the Cincinnatti Enquirer, the NFL Owners had enough votes to pass the measure for putting radios in defenders helemts.
Obviously this stems from the video taping of defensive signals done in New England, but it is actually a long time coming. This proposal has been on the table for several years, with Mike Holmgren always voting against it. However, there are so many rules in place to help the offense, I can't see this changing things that much, expcept now Lofa will hear something else in his ear rather than that quiet voice in the back of his head commanding him to kill all ball carriers.
UPDATE-- According to this article, the Seahawks actually voted against this measure, which was consistent to what they have done in the past.
could you explain how audio in the helmet for the defense is a result of videotaping allegations of the Patriots?
ReplyDeleteI don't see the link.
Because the Pats taped the defensive signals from other teams. You know when Lofa is looking toward the sideline, he's getting the play through signals from the coaches.

Looking toward the sidelines between plays I should say.

I would think that it would be possible to "tap" into the radio frequencies (even though I am sure they are encypted) and certainly much more difficult to catch the people doing it.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who gets rediected to some Iranian website on a regular basis. I have experienced this on different computers with no obvious consistancy. Sorry for straying from the topic at hand.
ReplyDeleteAnon...are you by accident clicking "next blog" in the upper left, because that takes you to another google blog and often they are from foreign countries
ReplyDeleteHow is Lofa going to hear the plays called when we are screaming so loud. Damn Belicheck and the Pats for cheating. Way to set an example for the youth of today belicheck.
ReplyDeleteThey can always fall back on the hand signals if Lofa can't hear. On another note, Mike I read over on Seahawks Insider that Mack's contract has been terminated due to a failed physical. Does this affect the cap any differently than retirement?
ReplyDeleteYung Hawk
Yung Hawk...no, his salary is finally off the books though, which clears yet another 900K. Until now, it technically was still counting against the cap.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to see that the people from Holmgren coaching tree voted against it. Andy Reid, Zorn, etc
ReplyDeleteif they can just "fall back on the hand signals" then why don't they just keep the rule the same. I see this opening up opportunities for Bilicheck to cheat further. I don't see the need for in helmet radio. This is not an answer to the cheaters in the league. Discipline is the only solution.
ReplyDeleteThank Mike!
ReplyDeleteYung Hawk
Winners win. Cheaters cheat. This will not qwell the cheating any more than anything else.
ReplyDeleteHolmgren is right, this will be confusing. But I'd say the Hawks get an advantage here, because we have a highly intelligent play calling LB who is on the field for almost all defensive plays and in all defensive formations. Other teams are not so fortunate.

I think Holmgren and his protege's vote against the radio helmet for defense because they are all offensive-minded coaches. All of them specialize in offense, and there is no way an offensive coach/player wants the defense to have a radio too.
ReplyDeleteHasselbecks back-and-forth audibles with the Tardinals and da Bears are gonna get REAL interesting...
Good to see you back PapaHawk...

Papahawk, don't you think we would be losing part of the advantage we have with a LB like Lofa? He's like a coach on the field, but now every defense will have a coach on the field via helmet audio.
