In a move than could have been predicted, J.J. Pesavento, of Next Level Scouting, has a report that the Seahawks are interested in Wisconsin PK Taylor Mehlhaff. Mehlhaff has a big leg and his accuracy has been improving. He should be used to performing in bad weather playing in Wisconsin. Pasavento is also reporting interest is being shown by the Chiefs, Broncos, Giants, Panthers, and Saints.
If you are interested in a more in depth profile, here is NFL Draft Countdowns.

Ok, so I am not entirely convinced. Do we want to draft a player to start, or a player to take the FG's?
ReplyDeleteMare, as much as some people dislike him, is pretty much the best in the business when it comes to kickoffs. But it seems to be both of these guys strengths, while accuracy could be a fluke with Melcaff (sp.?).
It's not a big deal tho, who ever we draft will get the job done, or else Mare will be an adequate second man for FG's.
It's Taylor Mehlhaff, that's the right spelling.
ReplyDeleteI feel that were good either way. I think as long as Mare's hip is healed he'll be more than adequate. Hopefully the rookie will just be an insurance policy. But I'd rather see them pick up a guy with more accuracy who is clutch in pressure situations rather than another big leg. No sense in picking up someone who's "accuracy is improving" when our kicker now is suspect.
ReplyDeleteI wonder: as opposed to kickers with "big" legs are there kickers out there advertised as having "little" legs?
ReplyDeleteanon-
ReplyDeletekind of, there are a couple kickers out there that are money from inside 40 but don't really have the leg to be consistant over 50. I would be more comfortable with one of them and let the strength coach add some distance.
After doing a little more research on this I am liking Coutu or Serna. Both have their problem, but are the best options in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteCoutu has a very big leg with a long of 58 yards and is VERY consistant inside 40 yards. Downfalls is that he can be streaky a times beyond 40 and that he had a hamstring injury in 2006 that caused him to miss a good chunk of the season. I believe that may have caused him to lose a bit of his leg.
Serna, my favorite choice, also has a strong leg with a long of 58 yards. He has good accuracy inside 40. He is from Oregon St. so is experienced kicking in bad weather (huge plus). His downfalls is that he can lose confidence and lost some of his accuracy last year. However, he did take over the punting last year which can take away from practice, interrupt his kicking approaches/timing and can put added stress on his leg. This wouldn't be an issue in Seattle.
I think Serna would be a great addition and if it weren't for him taking over the punting would probably been the #1 kicker in the draft.
Not sure what is going on here but Taylor is on Seahawks.net as the lowest kicker to get in the draft. I wonder if the Seahawks are just exploring all kickers they like and will have Mare train them to take his place?
