Seahawks Interviewing Running Backs

On Sirius NFL Radio, Kevin Smith, CUSA offensive player of the year, said that the Seahawks showed a lot of interest in him. They were the first team to interview him and gave him a bag full of gear. He is big and fast, and claims he can run better than he did. Considering he ran a 4.43, that would be impressive. His pro day is March 20th.

I would just say that it is good to know that there isn't a blind spot of loyalty to Shaun Alexander. Whether or not he is on the game one roster, a replacement needs to be ready, especially since lately he hasn't been able to get out of week one with out hurting himself.

  1. yea its good that they are not blindly loyal to shaun, but I, like probably quite a few fans are going to consider this draft a failure if we don't get stewart or mendenhall. drafting another back just feels like we're playing to get 2nd place...i dunno though, if ryan grant showed us anything you don't need the pedigree to be a good RB. still, it would be really tough for me to swallow

  2. I doubt Stewart or Mendenhall will be around when the Hawks pick at 25. It's possible, but unlikely. So, they would probably have to trade up in the first to have a chance, but would lose a draft pick in the process, and we're already a touch short on those. There are enough good backs in the draft this year that it might not be worth giving up a second round pick to grab one of the top backs (though it would be pretty friggin' sweet to have Stewart on the team).

I guess my point is that they likely won't trade up, and if they don't, they aren't likely to get either player...but I definitely don't think that the draft would be a failure if we don't draft one of these two very hyped up players...there are a lot more players in the draft, and plenty of em can play. Besides, the draft is a crap shoot...there's a good chance one of the two will be a bust, anyway. They'll take the best players on the board and in two years we can talk about whether or not this draft was a failure.

  3. I really want Mendenhall, however, I'm resigned to the fact that he won't be there (or Stewart)...

...which means I'd really, really, really, really, really, really like us to trade down to get extra picks.

Honestly, I don't overly care about the RB position if the offensive line sucks. It should be much improved with Wahle though! I don't care who the RB is, if they had "holes" to run through like the Hawk RBs last season, they could make Walter Payton and Barry Sanders look like crappy players (and that includes our terrible blocking from TEs and WRs).

  4. I'm with you regarding the priority on RB. If the RB is a game breaker, then sure; but not sure I see that type of RB in this year's draft. Trading down for more picks to allow us a shot a high end DL and OL to bolster our effectiveness in the trenches would go a long ways in improving our D and O.

  5. Stewart and Mendenhall will be gone by the time we pick, but Smith at the end of the second round would be nice. The guy almost broke Barry Sanders record for yards in a season. The first round could be TE or a big nasty DT.

  6. Alexander needs to go.

  7. I think that Stewart or Mendenhall will be around for the 25th pick. There are only a few teams in need of a running back. Most teams need OL or DT's. I think the Seahawks are keeping their options open for all rounds and Smith just happens to be available for the 2nd round just in case Stewart and Mendenhall are gone.

Alexander is still a good back. I still think we are giving him one more year and if he plays like he did this past year he will either be cut or retire.

  8. Stewart MIGHT still be around but Mendenhall will be LONG GONE at the 25th pick..would be nice if we could trade up a few spots to get Stewart

  9. I think the player that we secretly covet is Ray Rice... that guy is a football player. Not to mention incredibly talented. Granted he is probably not as talented as Mendenhall or Stewart, but is there really that much of a difference? I wonder.

  10. Rice's 40 time at the combine shocked me. He never looked that fast in college, so I'm betting it was a fluke due to his busting ass training to smoke the 40 time...He is a great back. There are tons of great backs this year. I dont see how the Hawks can lose, unless they get stupid and draft someone tiny like Mo Morris...

Smith looks kinda scrawny in that photo...is he a 25 carry a game back?!

  11. Yes, Shaun needs to restructure is contract or go. But there are two problems with either scenario.

    1) Shaun won't restructure because 'classy organizations don't do that to their core players.' His exact words. He's not seeing the handwriting on the wall.

    2) cutting him this year as opposed to next year will be too big of a hit on an already strapped salary cap.

If I were a betting man I'd say that he will be on the team for one more season and then he'll be released for 2009.
