Now that compensation picks have been announced, the draft order can be calculated. Thankfully, Frank Hughes at Seahawk Insider has done this for us. The Seahawks have pick numbers...25, 55, 86, 121, 189, & 233.

ReplyDeleteHave you ever noticed that draft picks are always graded on expectations but rarely on actual impact?
ReplyDeleteI read an article last year on ESPN about half way through the season that adjusted the mock draft based on the performance of the rookies, Mebane ranked much higher - I think like a 17th overall selection. Could be interesting to look at as we ramp up for the 08' draft.

Yes, SDHawksFan, I have noticed that, and I would love to see grades of past years' drafts based on performance along with the grades given by draft experts at the time of the draft. For example, Tatupu was considered a reach and I don't remember what grade Seahawks were given in that draft, but I'm sure it was mediocre. I'd like to see the grade now.

Chris Spencer is able to play center and both guard positions and is a big help, but linebacker Lofa Tatupu, quarterback David Greene and linebacker Leroy Hill were all reaches. Offensive tackle Ray Willis was a good pick in the fourth round, end Jeb Huckeba is an overachiever and the remainder of Seattle's draftees look like backups or special teamers.
Oh, and here's a team that always gets an A+
Arizona Cardinals: A
The Cardinals had to have a corner and a running back in this draft and they got both in the first two rounds. Antrel Rolle was maybe the best defensive player on the board and J.J. Arrington is a productive back who was a good value in the second round. Eric Green adds depth at corner; linebacker Darryl Blackstock and guard Elton Brown were also nice values; and if linebacker Lance Mitchell reverts to his pre-injury form, he could become a decent player.
After we trade down and trade Mo. Morris we will have a few more picks. IMO.

Another interesting thing from 2005- the ESPN sportsnation fan poll for the Hawks biggest needs were:

Thanks, zaxk and realspd. Does anyone know of grades for past years that are based on how the players have performed, though?
ReplyDeleteI've never seen anything like that Galigo, I think the reason is to put out any sort of list like that they would have to then say when they were right and wrong about certain players and they are probably wrong way more than they are right, so to put out a list like that would be very tough for any of these nfl guru's.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I could see a guy like Clayton putting out something like that he doesn't seem to have the same crazy ego as the others. But I wouldn't hold your breath.
Just go back and grade them yourself! If you do it in an email with a nice write up, I will post it.
ReplyDeleteRuskell waits 3 years till after a draft to grade it. The number of starters/contributors is what he uses to grade it.

Ex: They have Mebane the 6th rated DT, projected round: 3.
We drafted him with the 22nd pick in round 3 (2007).
Was he better than the 6th rated DT? One could certainly make that argument. A tough position to judge; I would say he was top 2-3 and maybe the best after Okoye, who was drafted in the 1st round (10th overall).
