Just thought I would update the kicker situation. According to this article by Lee Rasizer or the Rocky Mountain News, the Bronco's offered Olindo Mare a contract.
There are several items of note in the article. First, it would appear that Denver kept Mare in town most of yesterday putting on a full court press, (mixing sports analogies, bonus points) trying to get him to sign. No worries, the Hawks were probably a touch busy yesterday anyway. Mare got on a plane yesterday afternoon and headed to Seattle.
Second, the article says that the Seahawks have been in touch with Mare since it was apparent Brown was going to walk. Huh? Well, I guess this is the vet kicker we want. It seems if the idea of having Mare be the kicker is growing on some of you, and I would say I feel the same way. Kickers are kickers. If you want more proof, read this. The Mile High Report just did an analysis much like our Chris Sullivan which showed Elam is easily replaced too. The question now, is who is replacing their kicker with Olindo Mare?
END
Let Denver have him!!
ReplyDeleteI dont buy that "kickers are kickers" bs. Really clutch kickers are hard to find. How many games have been decided by a field goal or two? tons! a missed field goal in the third quarter or at the end of a half changes the way coaches call plays and how they strategize. If you cant depend on your kicker, you have to go for touchdowns and it also makes some coaches less aggressive on defense.
ReplyDeleteClutch kickers are damned important. We never would have had homefield advantage in '05 if it hadnt been for having a clutch kicker.
Mare sucked worse than any kicker ever has last year, and it boggles my mind that Seattle would prefer to sign an aging feeb like Mare instead of drafting another kicker like we did with Brown, Lindell, and Kasay.
No one thinks about the kicker untill your team is down by 2 points with less than two minutes to go...then all you want for christmas in Jason Elam or Josh Brown...

ESPN.COM poll of the day asks who the Seahawks should take with the 25th pick. Be sure to go on and vote.
ReplyDeleteHe had an injured hip last year. I doubt Brown does very well with a bad hip. I clearly remember Adam missing FGs in the Super Bowl for New England. Not game winning kicks, but FGs. If he were so good, he would have made those kicks so NE wouldn't have been in such a bad position late in the game. A decent kicker is a decent kicker. A great offense can make a decent kicker look like a great kicker.

No one is saying we aren't going to draft a kicker and have Mare as a veteran presence in case our rookie K falls flat this summer.
ReplyDeleteWhat other vet K is available for camp fodder?
No one
ReplyDeleteWhy don't we just go out and get the 95 yr old Morten Anderson?
ReplyDeleteI do think kickers are kickers for the most part, exceptions to every rule ofcourse. Brown was clutch, and Mare has been erratic.
ReplyDeleteI don't want him.
Clutch is kind of a myth, just like in baseball. Brown isn't clutch, he's just good.
ReplyDeleteThere is no reason why Mare couldn't make 4 game winners in 2008. Actually I hope he doesn't because I want blowout wins!
Did Brown save the team in 2006? probably, but that's pretty damn rare and isn't likely to be repeated.
Mare was good at kickoffs, which is very important for kickers. Accuracy can come and go, Mare might make every kick in 2008 for all we know.
I'm not trying to start the Olindo Mare fan club, he's probably an average kicker at best and probably equal to what a rookie kicker would give us.
Brown missed a lot of makeable kicks in the biggest games. He had one career year and the rest was average.
ReplyDeleteAnyway he's gone so let's hope a rookie can shine
Our best bet might be a rookie, but at least with Mare we have some insurance going into training camp. Kind of like the Vern Fonk type of insurance, though. Maybe if we sign him, he'll end up in one of their ads.
