Hackett Signs in Carolina

Adam Caplan of Scout.com reports it is a two year 3.5 mil deal.

First off, I am quite surprised. I would think that DJ would prefer a 1 yr deal to this. Two more years of making minimal money. It is possible the Seahawks never stepped up to keep him. As I have stated, they just may not have faith in his ability to stay healthy, coupled with a great deal of faith in the young players.

I will be announcing the winner of the contest later, once the details are confirmed.

Also folks, lets remember, the last time we lost a free agent to Carolina, they came to Seattle and got embarassed in the NFC Championship game that season. This is a little different, but lets all hold out hope for the same result.

  1. Do you think Ruskell has an analagous plan for a WR like he pulled with Julius Jones? Someone being overlooked who is just right for our type of game? That's what I am hoping!

  2. I really hope this doesn't come back to bite us.

  3. Yup, His name either Ben, Courtney, or Logan. We have good, young, and most importantly CHEAP Wr's.

I get it. The fans will be worried until they prove themselves...but if they never get to play, how are they supposed to do that.

We have to trust the FO on this one, just like Crumpler. They wouldn't have passed on such a minimal deal unless they knew something we didnt

  4. Has Ruskell done enough to earn our blind trust on this Michael? If we head into week 1 with Engram and Burleson as our 1,2 is there a team in the league with a weaker pairing?

    ReplyDelete
  5. We headed into about half the weeks in 2007 with Engram and Burleson as #1 and #2 and we did fine. The way I see it, Branch and Hackett weren't sure things any single game last season.

  6. He drops back to pass,[sacked].He had no one to throw to.

  7. Engram 1147 receiving yards and 6 td's.

    Burleson 694 receivning yards and 9 receiving td's + 2 kickreturn td's

    Hackett 374 receiving yards and 3 td's

So, if your #1 and #2 can't stay on the field and you get that type of production out of your supposed #3 and #4, how would having Engram and Burleson be a problem?

  8. If I'm Matt Hasselbeck, I'm really not happy. The fact of the matter is that we just let arguably our most productive receiver when healthy leave for a minimal deal. That's great we have confidence in our younger receivers but they are still an unknown and do not have the experience of Hackett. I will reserve judgement until the season begins on letting Hackett and Crumpler sign elsewhere for deals we easily could have matched, but right now, these decisions are looking questionable at best.

  9. Weaker pairing? Over Engram who put up pro bowl numbers last year and Burleson who is always a threat to break a big play? The team managed just fine with essentially just those two fueling the passing game last season. Obamanu stepped up in several games, and was the only guy in GB out there consistently catching balls. Plus Branch will be back at the end of October. I can think of several teams with recievers who are nothing special including one team in our division. This is nothing to worry about because I think if there is anything that has been proven since 04/05 is that the passing game revolves around Hass assuming they have anyone out there with reasonable hands. The biggest problem we have had is the injury bug so the best course is to just find guys who can be healthy.

  10. I wouldn't go as far as to say Bobby and Nate are the weakest pair. This just makes nate step up even more, and bobby is the perfect vet to lead the younger WR crew. I love Hackett, but not his weak ankles. We will be alright i think.

  11. Haha... it's not that the fans are so much worried about these 3 proving themselves as it is that right now our experienced talant is limited to an injured Branch, Burley and father time himself.

I trust in Burley's talant and Engram has always been consistant and beyond productive so I'm not so worried about our 1, 2 puch as long as we get a TE that can step up and produce. I'm just worried about what an injury to one of these could mean. But Mike's right, we need to give them a shot and more than anyone I trust TR. I would like to stay away from WR's in the draft and load up elsewhere (unless a player we can't pass up hits), but that's just me talking.

  12. Bummer. I loved watching Hackett play, his big goofy grin, and his athletic ability. Now we have no WR's over 6'-1". I hope Hackett does well in Carolina, but I wish he had stayed here.

The young guys had better step up.

  13. Someone put up the heights of the WRs the other day. The three youngsters were all over 6 feet so stop your bitchin'

    ReplyDelete
  14. Man at a price like that how do we not resign him? This sucks

    ReplyDelete
  15. Exactly, Payne is 6' 2", Obamanu is 6' 0", Courtney Taylor is 6' 1", and Jordan Kent is is 6' 4".

No, "we don't have any recievers over 6 foot". Try getting educated sometime, it helps.

    ReplyDelete
  16. That price, for a guy who has played 0, 3, 5, and 6 games in the last 4 seasons is a high price. DJ is a great reciever, when healthy. But that's a huge WHEN, as he hasn't been healthy enough to play in more than 60% of hawks games the last 3 years, and wasn't yet good enough to play his first year.

We could draft someone who can do the stuff he does, mainly the longer routes, pretty easy, plus, Taylor and Obomanu both can get open mid to deep as well. Lets just see how it goes.

  18. This is just plain stupid. Hackett is a proven receiver that has made big plays in big games. None of these other guys have done squat.

Taylor and Obamanu played, but what were their big impact games?

We couldn't come up with this kind of money?

    Dumb.

    ReplyDelete
  19. What I've noticed is that the Hawks passing game revolves around Hass's ability to deliver the ball where and when it needs to be. It does not seem to depend on particular receivers such as a Moss or Owens. That said we need three things from the receiving corps: Run your route precisely. Catch it when it's there. Be healthy enough to play.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I bet he would've stayed for a little less with the hawks.

The young guys are gonna need a year or two before having an impact.

Watch him turn Steve Smith into the best receiver in the league again.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I said we didnt have any wr's over 6'-1'', not 6'-0". I had read that Payne was 6'-1", and Kent probably is another year from seeing any playing time, so he doesnt really count.

Relax, my point was our WR are a little small, and they lack experience, not that the sky is falling or they suck. Im hoping they play well and at least one of them can get open deep.

  23. It seems like that much cash wouldn't have been unreasonable to pay for Hackett... the team must not have wanted him, because that is cheap in this day and age.

Alternatively, I know some people would hate this, but any chance Djax comes back here at a bargain basement price? He is a known commodity and Matt had great chemistry with him. I'm all for having high motor-good character guys, but was Jackson really that bad? He played a lot of good years for Seattle and sacrificed his body for the team. Sometimes I wonder if this is the Seahawks or Timmy's Choir Boys.

  24. The bottom line is that Ruskell didn't want to give DJ any more than a one-year contract and Carolina did.

I think it was the right move on Ruskell's part. Let the young- un's get their touches and step up.

I thank DJ for his contributions.

  25. This situation reminds me a little bit of when we got rid of Ahman Green a few years ago. Hackett is probably more or less a victim of circumstance like the "fumble-prone" Green, but like Green, he isn't needed. Green had some success outside the hawks, and Hack probably will too. It won't be terrible for us though, because like with Green, we'll manage just fine with the WRs we've got.

  26. "This is just plain stupid. Hackett is a proven receiver that has made big plays in big games. None of these other guys have done squat"

The only thing he has proven is how efficiently he can play the IR position. He can't be a playmaker if he's not on the field... Look at his stats, his average is good and he has big play abilities, but at the end of the year do you really want to see 384 yds with 3 TD's by your #2 receiver? Not me because that's not a productive year and nothing has indicated that he will play any differently this year. You pay him the 3.5 mil to ride the pine. Yes, I would love to give him another year in a Hawks jersey because he is great, but I for one, am not upset TR made the decision he did. He obviously doesn't think he will stay healthy because he didn't even offer to match or one up that minor offer. I may not be the most educated in the ongoings of the Hawks, but one thing I do know is that TR knows more than any of us put together.

  28. I think the Hawks draft WR in the first round of the draft. Devin Thomas, the kid from Michigan State should be there. He had a great year and an increidible combine. He is big, fast, runs good routes and has great hands. He would be a perfect fit for this offense. I think Timmie surprises us all.... then he addresses TE in round 2.

  29. Just wondering: how many of the people complaining today about the loss of Hackett were complaining a year ago about the trade involving D-Jack?

Some fans seem to think the composition of the team should never change -- or if it does, it should only be by adding new players, preferably big-name, high-price free agents. But last year's players must be kept, at all costs. I'll bet these fans thought signing Shaun to that huge contract was a great idea. They have no understanding of the salary cap or its long-term impact.

Hackett wanted more than the Seahawks thought he was worth. So he's gone. Time will tell if the Panthers overpaid to get their new receiver. I suspect that they have.

  30. PHX-

Have to disagree. TR is drooling over his young guys. I would be surprised to see him take a WR until late. If he picks up Keller it would be as good as picking up a WR in the pick too. I think that would be the way to go. I honestly think he'll go TE, OL, DL or even RB if J Stew falls before he'll think WR. But then again TR has suprised us all before.

  31. well, PFT is reporting the deal is 3.75mil over 2 years.. I think I would be looking at offering him vet min plus $100,000 for every game he dresses, plus $100,000 for not being on IR after game 5 and after game 10, that would be 1.8 mil (approximately) plus the vet min which is 600,000k or so. Add in percentage caught, percentage of offensive plays he is on the field for, number of TD passes caught, and he has the opportunity to make $5 or 6 mil during the course of the season with not terribly hard to reach goals.
Other than being able to stay on the field instead of IR...

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm interested to see what the coaches think about our back up wideouts. Engrams great but he a little old. I bet they pick a TE in the second round and pick another back up WR like R. Davis from the bears for added experience.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hackett made plays when he was on the field. None of the other WRs can say that. None of them have regularly got open and caught passes from Hasslebeck.

We've only ever had one receiver who had no history with Hasslebeck who came in and made an impact right away, and that was Joe J, a seasoned veteran.

We are banking on rookie WRs who have never done anything. They have never faced an NFL cornerback, had to go over the middle vs. NFL players etc.

We couldn't come up with 4 mil over 2 years for a proven WR? We'll end up paying more than that for the Bears WR, and he's never proven anything either.

Burleson has yet to prove he's a big time WR in this offense.

Hackett had a high ankle sprain. These are hard to come back from in one season, but not habitual injuries.

  34. My roommate works at the airport for TSA (yeah I know we all hate them) and was just telling me this weekend that he saw and talked with Matt Hasselbeck as he was going somewhere. Matt was stuck in the line with everyone else because of some retarded security as usual, and my roommate started talking with him. One of the main things he said though about the front office and free agency was that he thought it was KEY for us to get Hackett resigned... my roommate said he was adamant about it. He also said he really liked what the front office was doing with the backfield (RB's) and that he thought that it'd work out really well for the team and he was excited about the changes. Also, he said something to the effect of the fact he was glad that the front office was holding people/players accountable for things... he left it sorta vague, but I don't think its very hard to know what he was talking about considering it followed directly after the comments about the new FA RB's.

Anyway, just thought I'd share that. I hope Matt isn't too upset about the loss, and if he is, I hope Ruskell gets him something he can feel more confident about unless the younger receivers somehow show Matt the light that he wasn't seeing this weekend... =oP

  35. Also, I wanted to point out that I'm not against the move, nor did I mean to sound like I did. So far I like a lot of what Ruskell has done, and trust his judgment in scouting talent considering he wouldn't be where he is if he was a complete moron. If any of us always knew better, we'd be GM's right?

One thing I wanted to throw out there though was.. has anyone else noticed that almost all of the passes hasselbeck throws are the types receivers always have to turn around for? and or jump for but always facing the pass. Why doesn't he ever do those deeper passes they can catch over their shoulder while still running, like right in the bread basket... leading passes? Has anyone else noticed this? or am I just crazy?

Hasselbeck is a great QB, I've just never really noticed him throwing those passes, or when he does they always seem different than what I'm used to seeing with other QB's..

  37. I was disappointed when I saw the headline, and am even more disappointed now that I have contemplated it for the last couple of hours. I trust Ruskell's ability to evaluate talent. (Although, I have even greater trust of his capacity to evaluate defensive personnel.) However, I consider the loss of Hackett (a veteran) a move that significantly weakens a now (speaking in general terms) very inexperienced unit. Maybe Branch is ahead of schedule in his rehab and recovery? Maybe Obomanu is on the verge of becoming a legitimate starter? Maybe Payne, Taylor, Kent, or someone in the draft is going to exhibit the ability to step in and make us forget about DJ? Regardless, the departure of Hack creates TOO MANY new questions at the WR position. Wide receiver should be a position of stability, not uncertainty.

  38. The Hawks window of opportunity to win the Super Bowl is shrinking as the nucleus gets older (Hasselback and Walter Jones) or probably leaves the team (Alexander). We can bring in guys to fill gaps but the glory days are waning.

It's time the Seahawks do something dramatic. It's time they take a chance on a big play wideout for Hasselback. The time is now, trade for Chad Johnson.
