One Year Deals....Flavor of the Day

Well, all in one day, three of the bigger names left in free agency all signed one year deals.

Bryant Johnson, Derrick Ward, and Eugene Wilson

What does this mean for the Hawks?? Well, first it is clearly an indication that the money is beginning to dry up for the players left on the market. A lot of them may want to play their way into bigger deals next year. The obvious hope is that DJ comes back on a similar deal.

Also, Ellis Wyms deal never seemed to get finalized as expected. He could return on a one year deal. That would be great for the Hawks because of his versatility.

This is Tim Ruskell time folks. Good teams find solid contributers in the back end of free agency. There are a handful of gems still out there on the market. Lets hope Tim Ruskell has the eye and the funds to get a few on to the team.

Also, I apologize if the blog has been slow today. It is 80 and sunny here in So Cal, and I ain't got no school for three whole weeks, baby! END....

To be fair, it was a pretty decent day in Springfield, IL as well.

  3. I never realised you lived in So Cal Mike.

I bet it's not a patch on 'Rotherham, England'. Check it on google, if you want to feel even better about that sunny weather you've got.

  6. I assumed you lived in Seattle

  7. Nope, I grew up in Seattle. Ms. SA is in the fashion industry so she needs to be down here. I am afraid to give up my tickets because they rule and now there is a long waiting list. Plus, considering we are a winning team with strong management,it may be a while before I can get some again. So I travel a lot during the season. Obviously!

I saw that about Stewart. McShay is kind of a tool, and he kind of contradicted himself by saying it was not big deal because the teams had three years of tape and the combine. I think Seattle would be an ideal situation for him, plus his mom is local and he would be good for the community. The Hawks could wait for him to be ready too.

  8. Speaking of one year deals... Did I read someplace that JJ's contract could be terminated after a year without a lot of cap hemorrhage?

If J-Stew could fall to 25 that might be a good thing. But that's a whale of an if...

Personally if they can't grab J-Stew, I think they should go OL/DL/TE the first day and draft BPA day two.

    My two cents.

  9. I said that, but realized afterwords it may have been misinterupted.

Jones can be cut after next year, 09' and they can save money by doing that. So really he has to play two years to avoid any type of salary cap hit.

  10. J-STEW WANTS TO BE A HAWKS

Michael...don't if this is ok or not...but here is the CHAT RECAP with Jonathon Stewart from ESPN earlier today!

    SportsNation Buzzmaster: We've got Jonathan!

Jordan (Slinger, WI): What's your favorite pre game meal?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: Chicken. Chicken breast and some marinara sauce.

Tom (West Bloomfield, MI): How is your toe?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: My toe is getting better. I just had surgery. It's coming along. It will be ready to go a couple of months.

Allan (Seattle, WA): Who was your favorite team as a kid?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: Dallas Cowboys. I'm an Emmitt Smith fan.

Brian(Kirksville, MO): You had a great college career at Oregon, now what are your goals for your professional career.

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: To become one of the greatest RBs to ever play. That's what I want to accomplish. I am not going to put stats on it, because I don't think it comes down to statistics when you come down to the greatest players.

Brad (Gadsden,Alabama): What are you going to miss most at Oregon?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: I'm going to miss the most is my teammates and the fans. The fanbase that we had out in Oregon.

Smitty (Houston, Tx): If you had to compare yourself to a runner in todays game who would it be and why?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: I would say Jamaal Lewis. People tell me that I have some similarities to LT, the way he carries himself on the field. I would say Lewis, because we're close to the same size.

Woodinville, WA: Whats the part of your game you think you should work on most?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: Consistent blocking. Becoming a consistent pass blocker.

Shane Simmons, Seattle, WA: Jonathan, how would you feel about playing for the Seattle Seahawks being a local guy?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: That would be great. If that was possible for me to play there. I have a lot of family and friends there. My mom is there. There are a lot of things I can do in that community to help out the youth.

Shaun (Bellevue, WA): Do you feel your the best RB in this draft, if so why?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: Yeah. I feel that I have the capability to be the best in the draft. Just getting my opportunity to do that and show that.

Anthony (portland, or): Would you rather play for a competeing team for nfl and have a limited role or team thats not and starting?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: I want to be on a competiting team and compete for a starting role. I wouldn't want to go to a situation where it was easy. It hasn't been that way my whole life. It would make me a better athlete and competitor to compete for a spot.

Griggs (Seattle, WA): There is a notion you are more of a gliding runner than a power back, what do you have to say in defense of yourself?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: I'm not a glider. I think people get that mixed up because I'm a bigger back with the way I run. I run with patience and set things up. I think people will see at the next level that I'm not a glider, I'm an explosive runner.

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: They'll see my speed more often. I'm not a glider at all.

Jordan (Slinger, WI): What's on your iPod right now?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: A lot of music. A lot of variety of music. I have like 2,000 songs. The last thing I probably listened to was probably the old Usher CD. I listened to it on the airplane a couple of days ago.

Krishna (Newport Beach, CA): Hey Jonathan, In the draft i know its frustrating to know where you are going, but do you have a specific team that you would like to play for? or rather a favorite team?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: I've always wanted to play in the Northwest, in Seattle or somewhere because of my family. That would be the only team that if I had a choice that would be the one I would want to play for.

Santino (Portsmouth, VA): Jonathan, if you had to pick one thing that gets you hype before the game what is it?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: I'm motivated by the opportunity. I'm thankful by the opportunity to do things in football. I approach football humbly and being thankful for the opportunity. I just get in the zone and creating an atmosphere of peace within me so I can go out and give it my all. I listen to my iPod or whatever to create a cool little environment.

Danny (Santa rRosa, CA): Which do you feel is the better stat rushing yards or all purpose yards?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: I'm not really sure what's more important. Just doing everything you can, running the ball, catching the ball. So I guess I say all-purpose yards.

Gary G, Independence Ore.: Jonathan, props on a great career at Oregon. What is your honest opinion on how the U of O would have done without all the injuries last year?

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: Great question. We would have dominated the whole nation. We had a lot of talent on the team. It was unfortunate when our QB went down. He was an athletic QB that could make plays. When he went down, teams started to see us as one-dimensional.

SportsNation Jonathan Stewart: Continue to support me and the Oregon football team. Keep us in your prayers. I'm thankful for the opportunity to have such a great fanbase.

  11. Speaking of FA deals. I noticed that Chaun Thompson just got picked up... I'm begining to get really frustrated because the whole Tru/Hackett situation is distracting the FO from addressing our other needs on the team, primarily our ST. We still need to sign a LB who could be a major contributor on ST and possible be the captain. Mike, I know you said that Caleb Miller was a likely candidate and he is still available, but if TR keeps screwing around and he gets picked up where does that leave us with the remaining LB's in FA? I've noticed that there are still some solid players, but haven't heard if they are even looking. Also, many of the remaining good backers would either be looking to start or come at too high of price... How does the Tru/Hackett situation effect our ST needs? Might be a good discussion to get started.

  14. Here's to So Cal Hawk fans! I'm a displaced Northwesterner living in the sunny south as well. Since I don't have season tickets like you Mike, I have to rely on Direct TV's NFL package and a good dose of sites like this to quench my thirst for everthing Seahawk. Cheers!

  15. I still have my season tickets too, but I only get to go to one or two games a year at Qwest...

Thankfully I've seen three playoff wins in recent years in person (I've never seen the Hawks lose at Qwest in person actually), and I also usually go to 1 or 2 road games a year as well.

  16. DKSB,
You live in Springfield? I've been reading your blog lately and it's pretty enjoyable. I didn't realize you lived in the middle of Illinois near me. I'm going to school up in Bloomington. Sucks being a Seahawks fan in Bear country eh?

  17. Purplepansy,
Hells yeah it sucks. The reaction I get from people when they find out I'm a Seahawks fan is usually:

"Huh... I didn't know you guys actually existed..."

Like I'm a chupacabra or something... One of my neighbors asked me if the 12th Man flag outside my house was "a nascar thing." Ugh.

I have to say it was pretty sweet taunting my neighbors about that game at Qwest last season :-]

Ahh.. Bloomington... The cheaper place to fly back to Seattle from :-]
