I thought that would change the very polarizing Shaun Alexander topic by posing this question. Does the Patriots failure to sign Randy Moss help the Seahawks?
For more information.....
I say yes. When free agency started on Thursday night, the hot receiver was Bernard Berrian. He received a six 42 million dollar deal, w/ 16 guaranteed. That is 5 mil above DB money. Why was he the hot the receiver? Well probably because most teams made an errant assumption that Randy Moss back to the Pats was a done deal. Now, with numerous receivers such as Berrian, Stallworth, Porter, Wilford, and even Kerry Colbert cashing in, it would appear that needy teams have filled their WR needs. With suitors thinning out, it is becoming increasingly possible that Moss will leave New England. If you have money (Tampa Bay/Chicago) and you need a receiver, who are you targeting Randy Moss or DJ Hackett? I think that a general manager is obligated at this point to kick the tires on Randy Moss.
Where does this leave DJ Hackett? Well, losing Randy Moss makes New England a team in need of WR's, however they did waste a 2nd on Chad Jackson two years ago. They still have Welker. Gaffney, who has been there for two years now remains unsigned. I don't get the feeling they would break the bank for oft injured wideout Hackett. So where can he go where the pastures are greener? I am having a hard time finding a landing spot that seems plausible. I really think that he comes back for a 1 or 2 year deal. It allows the young guys to be groomed as replacements for Bobby who is a free agent and conceivably retire next year. It allows for more continuity on offense with the chance that next year the team could more likely continue with out missing a beat. That is the goal isn't it, sustained success.
If the Hawks ink Crumpler, which I think will happen by tomorrow afternoon, that fills one of the two biggest needs. Resigning Hackett would ensure an effective air attack in 08'. The question would be a ground game. If the Hawks have to clear cap space to get both deals done, wouldn't it be worth it even if the team had to reach or trade up to get a back they liked. It would still leave numerous picks to take the best available player. I think so. Obviously a DT would need to be picked as well, so the first two rounds could be looked at as either a DT or RB. If one of the big three falls, take him and go DT in the 2nd. If all the 1st round backs are gone, go DT and take a 2nd round RB. Maybe even take a RB in the 7th too, that creates competition.
It is certainly a lot to chew on, so please discuss.
UPDATE---Two things I failed to mention in my original diatribe, Javon Walker is also available and supposedly 10 teams are interested. He appears to be the favorite for teams looking at perpetually hurt wideouts. Also, the Skins still haven't spent any money, so that remains a possibility.
Well I left comments elsewhere that says under the right circumstances I would see the possibility of us signing him even, were he and we so inclined..
ReplyDeleteI agree with your draft prediction. If mendenhall or stewart don't fall to our pick, then I think we go DT 1st, RB 2nd. TE in the 3rd or 4th? At all? Kicker in the 6th :P
ReplyDeleteSome interesting points, I think teams are put off in the same way we didn't make more of an effort to lock up Hackett. The injuries are just too much of a red flag. Teams are signing players who are arguably lesser quality but whom will guarantee you 14-16 games.
ReplyDeleteA team will offer him a 2nd or 3rd tier deal, which if we can match I'm sure he comes back. He was hoping for big bucks which he wont get now.
As for the draft, we'll go BPA in round 1 which could be any position in reality. I still like the look of Branden Albert.
I would agree that Moss is helping the Seahawks cause, but I'm not quite sure how many GM's are taking him seriously about leaving NE.
ReplyDeleteI think Berrian's deal will be looked upon in a couple of years as a pretty bad deal. I think Deion and him are in the same boat. 2nd tier guys making 1st tier money.
I'm a big fan of us getting Stewart. Heres to him falling to us and the Seahawks not breaking all of our hearts by ignoring RB's until the 2nd day...
I think if the RB's are gone when we pick and OG Brando Albert is there we need to JUMP on that guy..This would insure a dominant OLINE next season
ReplyDeleteSupposedly Randy and Daunte are talking a reunion year in which they play on the same team. A team that needs a QB and WR might get a great WR and at best a mediocre QB!

i love matt, but honestly in watching his long ball, and randy's ability to separate quickly and get open alone way downfield regularly, i'm not sure matt could routinely get him the ball, but it's a real neat thought. go...hawks!
