S.A.- NFL DRAFT PREVIEW-Round 4

And the hits just keep on coming! I have completed my round 4 analysis for the Seahawk Addicts draft preview. I must say, round 4 was the toughest. Mainly because the Hawks don't currently have a 5th rounder, so I was conscious of players they might really like who could go in the fifth as well. Picking in the 4th, Ruskell could grab someone he really likes projected for the fifth. At this point, it is about getting good players and good fits, and very little is considered a reach. Especially when you won't be picking again for 65-70 slots.

Anyway, lets get to the projections. As always, these are educated guesses formed around all I have read and learned about Tim Ruskell. To Continue...

If you haven't been following along, here are the previous projections.

Round 1..............Round 2..................Round 3

In both of the first two projections, the reasoning behind how I made my decisions is discussed. Meanwhile.....

SEAHAWK ADDICTS 4TH ROUND PROJECTIONS

JerMichael Finley-TE- Finley probably has one of the bigger upsides of all the TE's. He is big, fast, and has good ball skills. He has ideal height for the position at 6'4" He is also known to be a team guy and has good intangibles. The knock on him is his blocking. He also could use to put on some weight. He is also kind of inexperienced, he would have benefited greatly from staying another year in Texas. Because of that, he is likely to find himself drafted in the 4th. Expect TE's to slide a little further after the teams with a glaring need take the top 4 or 5.

Brian Kehl-LB-BYU- Kehl is a Ruskell guy to a tee. He is a bit undersized, but makes up for it with quickness, effort, and attitude. He is a big hitter despite his lesser attributes. He was a leader of an overachieving BYU defense. He will be an excellent back up and special team with the possibility to be more. The one knock is that he is a little older at 24 because of taking a mission.

Marcus Griffin-S-Texas- Lots of people have been speculating about Texas players that the Hawks may be interested in, but nobody mentions Griffin. The Hawks interviewed him at the senior bowl, and it is just as likely they are looking a little closer at him. He has great bloodlines, and a great attitude. He is a hard worker who clearly understands football. While his measurables aren't off the charts, he has enough to get by with his smarts. Would be an asset on special teams as a rookie.

Carlton Powell-DT-VT- Powell has the ability to be a very good second day pick. Doesn't have the measurables, only weighing 290, but the numbers don't lie. VT was one of the best rush defenses in the country and Powell was a big reason why. He has started to develop pass rush moves too. He only had 2 1/2 sacks as a senior, but had 15 Qb pressures. Often that is a better indication of his actual success in rushing the passer. He would be a valued addition to the Hawks as he earned awards at VT for both leadership and hustle. It didn't show up right in the chart, but teams have gained NEGATIVE 13 yards on their last 106 running plays towards Powell.

Kirk Barton- T- Ohio St- Could be an excellent use of a 4th round pick. He started almost every game of his four year career at OSU, and played well against top competition. Seahawks have had some success getting linemen from OSU later in the draft. Rob Sims at least is a starter, which more than a lot of 4th round picks can say. If the team is serious about eventually moving Lock to the left side, then Barton could be the right tackle of the future. In the short term he could replace Ray Willis if he leaves as a free agent next year, or as the back up tackle if Willis has success at guard.

Chris Harrington-DE- Texas A+M- Harrington's pops was a Los Angeles Ram. He is the kind of try hard overachiever that Tim Ruskell loves. He has top notch leadership and is a tireless worker. Right now he holds up against the run better than rushes the passer, but that is what would make him a good complement to the current rotation. He is said to have football instincts that can't be taught. Could turn out to be anything from a solid end to the next Aaron Kampman.

Ok, there is round 4. No round 5 selection, so I may take a few days before throwing up the late round selections with the specialists. Also, special thanks to Coach B. I had a different DT in the mix who was kind of a reach, but after reading his comment in the Laws thread I discovered someone I hadn't looked at too much. After a second look, I included him.

THANKS AGAIN FOLKS!!!!

  1. Since I am a Cal fan, I want more Craig Stevens. I was advocating Brandon Mebane last year because he is humble beast of eccentric nature. The guy has some freaking weird outfits. I remember at a party at Cal, he had a bright purple pimp hat. My friend, she was one of the trainers for the team. Telford has his players prepared for the next level and plus you have to be humble after working out the Cal's football facilities, Waterboy style.

  3. Also while on KJR JC states that once the wrist is healed Shaun is gone, and that he thinks best player available of OT,DT,TE,RB will be selected in first round. Nothing new, but thought I would pass it along.

  4. Mare is in Denver today, so he has to make it out of there first

  5. I think that if Kevin Smith is available in the 3rd or 4th that they would give him a look. In a normal year the guy would go in the 2nd.

  6. how did Jermichael do in the combine? Or did he even participate? I want to know if there is any film on this guy. I looked but I do not have subscriptions to any scout sites. What else can you tell us about this guy Mike?

  7. Mike-

Any insight to Cottam's injury status? With all this talk of TE's he could be a steal in the 3rd if his wrist is expected to hold up. His size and blocking abilities would fit good with our system and he has the ability to stretch the field. Just seems that if he could be counted on to be healthy, he may be the top TE in the draft.

  8. Yes, Kevin Smith could be a good pick, however I tend to agree with previous analysis by Michael...the Hawks seem most likely to draft a RB in round 1 or 2, or just wait until 6, 7, or sign an undrafted FA RB. If they draft a RB, the FO needs to be confident that he will be able to replace Mo on the roster and contribute, or make the practice squad. They aren't likely to put a 3rd or 4th round pick on the practice squad, especially if they don't want another team to sign him, and they might not feel comfortable with a 3rd or 4th round pick being capable of replacing Mo without some time to learn the system and work under the coaching staff for a while. If they get a guy on day 1 of the draft, they also can spend the night working out a deal to trade Mo for a second day pick, whereas this might not be as easy if they "replace" Mo with a back in the 3rd or 4th round and have to put together a trade during the second day...but, hey, who knows. If the value is right, why not take him and figure something out? But it would be nice if we could get something for Mo if he is replaced, and it would be really nice to get a pick in round 4 or 5 of this years draft, something that might be easier if we are working on a trade before day 2 starts.

It also makes a lot of sense that we have to be confident that any replacement for Mo can actually replace his production and be successful from week 1 in our offense. I wouldn't be surprised if they've told Mo that he will get a chance to compete with JJ for the starting job. They didn't pay JJ like he was just going to be handed the job, so if they want a back that can challenge JJ, they really need a sure thing, and there aren't as many sure things in round 3 and 4 as there are in round 1 and 2. There is also basically no risk in signing an undrafted rookie FA and letting him compete with Mo, but if you draft a guy in round 3 or 4, you've already decided that he's gonna get Mo's roster spot, otherwise it's a wasted pick.

But Kevin Smith is a great player, so maybe he would present a lot of value in the 4th and it would be worth the risk.

  9. CTS,

My understanding of this guy is that most teams view him as a large injury risk due to his college years. They also are looking at his production in college, in all of his years at college he caught a total of about 21 balls. If he had been healthy throughout those years, he'd probably be the 1st TE taken this year.

  10. Ahtyba Rubin could just as easily been my selection in the third instead of Pressley - it is a tossup for two very different DT's.

FB Peyton Hillis could be our next Mack Strong multi-tooled guy.

S Tom Zbikowski is a throwback tough football guy and a boxer, another career he might pursue.

TE Brad Cottam could last this long because of injury factors and, if so, I would grab him before Finley. I fear Finley's Wunderlic score might very well be single didget. TE Craig Stevens could have moved himself up to this round by draft day, and he is the only TE that can block.
Anyway, TE if it hasn't been addressed earlier has to be thoroughly examined here.

DE Johnny Dingle would be a priority as a fifth rounder, but we don't get one of those so I move him up to this round.

Very difficult so separate the possibilities in the third and fourth.

Ah, it's great to be retired and have some time to invest in something so esoteric and non-sensical as the draft when it's raining and blowing and the wood doesn't have to be split for a month or so.

Looking forward to round 6, MS.

  11. Anonymous,

My thought about Kevin Smith is that he seems to be a very good player, and would, in either the 3rd or 4th rounds represent very good value. I think the team might have signed Duckett with the idea of also playing as a backup FB type so that they could let go of Kirtman, who hasn't looked so good. (Admitedly, I haven't looked into this idea as of yet, but it is one I have been mulling over).
Also, if their are enough RB left that they like after day one, even if they hadn't selected one they could still trade Mo with the intention of grabbing one.

I don't think Ruskell thinks Duckett/JJ is the long term answer, and would love to get a great value RB this year so that he doesn't have to select one next year when the draft is much weaker at the position.

  12. Seattle times is reporting that the Seahawks have resigned LB D.D. Lewis and DL Chris Cooper, both of whom were on our team in 2006.

Its great to have D.D. back, lets hope he can stay injury-free this season. Cooper brings some depth to the line.

  14. Still, I tend to think the Hawks are more concerned with TE's in the draft over RB's. Don't get me wrong RB is a position we need some depth at but why would we sign JJ and Duckett if we were going to pick a RB in the 1st or 2nd round of the draft. Doesn't seem to make much sense...

  16. Griffin,
Good points. Another thing to consider: The Hawks like their 3rd RB to contribute on special teams. Mo might not be a great option on special teams, apart from returning kicks. A rookie picked up in round 3 or 4 (or any round, really) could be a special teams contributor while taking a year to learn the O. That might help the special teams more than with Mo on the roster.
