In their coverage of 32 teams in 32 days, ESPN's NFL Live looked at the Seahawks today. If you missed it I am sure it will be on later, and if ESPN posts a video, I will add it to this post. In the meantime, here is a summary.....
Hasselback was on, and asked a couple of the big offseason questions. First he said that Holmgren leaving will inspire the team to really get after it, not that they wouldn't have already. Also, he thinks that the transition to Mora is no big deal because they have "great guys" and "great leadership" on this team. Also, he said he knows nothing about Shaun other than he is rehabbing. He said that every year he expects to see new people on the team, and it is always hard because you make friends with guys.
Marcellus Wiley had the quote of the show, when he said Shaun Alexander is a "turf monster". Which means while the rest of the guys are looking to hit, you are looking for a nice piece of turf to fall on. He then proceeded to question 37's heart.
Todd McShay was a little kinder, saying he thinks Shaun can still play in the right system. He thinks the Seahawks will look at Dustin Keller in the first. Might be a little high to take him, but he fits what the Hawks like to do with the TE perfectly. END

Pretty much the same stuff ESPN always says.
ReplyDeleteShaun is soft, they miss Hutchinson.
The Shaun is soft stuff always pisses me off, I think he's done, but I hate it when people start making personal attacks on him. Calling a player soft is a low blow and unfair to one of the best running backs of this decade.
He is soft! They are just calling it like it is, I have to say, I agree with them, he has always been soft.
ReplyDeleteIts not a personal attack, it an obvious point, and as a Die Hard hawks fan, I have a tough time admitting that one of our best players is a wuss, but I know it to be true, I watch every game and I would have to be blind not to see that!!
He's slow, overworked and finished not soft.
ReplyDeleteYes I admit that there are times that he falls down fairly easy, but to call a great NFL running back soft is just unfair.
Warrick Dunn was awful last year, is he soft? Wistrom was awful in 2006, was he soft?
Players decline, I don't understand why ESPN can't grasp that. Just because Shaun is a calm guy and doesn't yell and scream like Ray Lewis doesn't make him soft.
Joey, I am not arguing, just saying that Shaun has NEVER been a tough runner, and that had NEVER been his deal. I dont think ESPN or myself are saying that he wasnt a great back and he is declined and probably finished, but he has been a hook slider since he was backing up Ricky Watters!!
ReplyDeleteDont be blind to that fact.
Also, HOLMY ALWAYS said that "Shaun needs to bang it in there".
ReplyDeleteI think there are plenty of Video and Audio throughout his ENTIRE career.
I won't disagree with that, he certainly isn't a bruiser and I would not describe him as tough, but for ESPN to make comments like "he's a turf tackler" is immature.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a big deal, I just thing the term 'soft' is to harsh.
If you're worried about Shaun's feelings, he's got 30+ millions reasons over the last couple years to help soften the blow to his ego.
ReplyDeleteI'm not worried about Shaun's feelings. I doubt he cares what Marcellus Wiley and Trey Wingo think about him.
ReplyDeletehey who cares what espn says they are a bunch of one sided pricks anyway thanks D ROB
ReplyDeleteCompared to the running style of Jamal Lewis and other backs he ran soft and ran timidly. Compared to most 'average joes', he's tough as nails - I think NFL players don't roll into the pros as the Pillsbury Dough Boy...
ReplyDeleteI've no problem with Trey Wingo, except that SA would treat him like his personal B*%ch in person...
NOBODY CARES ABOUT ESPN. They act like they know everything at ESPN. Trey Wingo is a DIPSHIT (sorry for the language but he pisses me off).
ReplyDeleteI bet the whole segment was short too. They never like to talk about the Hawks. Its as if they only report on the east coast teams because they are on the east coast; with the exception of a few west coast teams they occasionally report on. hey Mike, make ESPN the next ASSCLOWN. HAHA
since we're all agreed ESPN sucks goat scroat, let's not let them have the last laugh and revisit this terrain ourselves, defending what doesn't need defending.
ReplyDeleteThe best part is that Trey Wingo wasn't even doing the show, it was the other guy
ReplyDeleteAgreed though, ESPN doesn't cover the Hawks very well, but who does, a couple of blogs? We take what we can get. I certainly don't turn ESPN off because they suck about talking about the Hawks, I at least listen and then degrade their coverage
ReplyDeletewell i agree with you Mike on that a little bit. I just prefer browsing the web for seahawks related news. I can always count on NFLN for the visual part of it. Again, who does report report on the seahawks besides a few blogs. (nice observation Mike)I still think ESPN could use some new faces. These guys on there now are no talent hacks.
ReplyDeleteESPN is the Fox News Channel of football coverage!!! Spit out what is already said, and try to throw some edge in there by stirring up the pot, obviously it works because people still care what they have to say for some reason... Anyway, I will miss 37, I mean how soft could you possibly be to play in the NFL, break a then-record, and be an MVP.
ReplyDeleteThe Hawks will again have the NFC West crown, but there could be some challenge this year, not from the Rams, but it will be a tougher division regardless.
I really want to see Seneca on the field more, but not at the cost of #8 getting injured. 2 quarterbacks lined up with Weaver in between in the I could definitely have some spectacular play possibilities. Coach is leaving after the season there is chance of crazy plays when they go all out! I am very excited to get to as many games as I can from down here in Portland, anyone selling tickets when they come in? I know it will be sold out completely by the time I can order them online!
Greg
Oh of course I mean "I-Formation"
ReplyDeleteGreg
in reality shaun was the nfl mvp, pro bowler, led team to the super bowl and will be in the ring of honor. most of the people taking shots at him are players who couldn't cut it in the league on these stupid shows or people like reporters that have been following players around and sniffing jocks their entire life.
ReplyDeleteshaun was a stud. got hurt and has gotten older and his O line has been terrible the past 2 years. i have a feeling he still might have something left ...if he can stay healthy.
peace.
Does anyone know when the schedule comes out? I need to figure out when to take trips to see the family up there.
ReplyDelete~USAFANARC
Yes. ESPN sucks when it comes to covering us.
ReplyDeleteThis is really for a different thread... but it amazes me when these idiotic "experts" talk about who we'll draft and then they mention people who Ruskell would never touch (character issues).
I don't claim to know everything about every other team but if knowing football was my job, you can bet that I'd sure as hell know more than these idiots.
I try and cut ESPN some slack because they do have to cover every team, so obviously they're gonna miss some things.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately that leads to things like "Kelly Jennings had 0 picks,so he isn't good." That isn't a direct quote, but it's the type of stuff ESPN looks at.
The only thing I don't like about ESPN is when they make personal attacks. For Marcellus Wiley (a former player) to call a former MVP, pro-bowler and great running back 'soft' is poor journalism/analysts. Then for Wiley to question is heart is just wrong.
he is soft, will always be soft, and once he got his payday he became even softer....he will most likely be cut by june 1st. i would like to see the hawks keep him around for one more year to see if some of his fight may come back. he is never soft at the 1 yard line though is he?
ReplyDeleteWiley may be wrong, but he is however very accurate. We win a Super Bowl or two and ESPN and all the rest will put us in a different catagory, eh!
ReplyDeleteWiley was a stud.
ReplyDeleteSA was a stud.
SA is raking in millions that he does not earn nor deserve.
ESPN backer is Boomer who has always been a Hawks guy...Too bad he is never around.
And Jennings gets beat like a rug way too often....Of course so did Tru for most of his career.
I DO have something bad to say about #37.
ReplyDeleteNot long ago the team was discussing restructuring his deal to make it fair for both parties involved.
1) The TEAM would have had more room this season to keep Brown (which really we don't need him anyway), or added some other free agents.
2) Shaun would still have a long contract and would be easier to trade so he can be with another team (Hawks no longer need him).
3) The FANS would have more understandingand respect for a guy who is willing to do what is best for the team, not the pocket. Who knows the fans may not yell at and heckle him when he comes back to town in a new uniform. Of course if he is not injured when he plays us next, because lets be honest, who would want to run against our LBs and DEs? And hopefully this year we can clog the middle better
Greg
Some of the comments here are as bad as CNN's biased reporting. (one silly political remark deserves another)
ReplyDeleteIf you're calling someone soft, I'd like to see you do it to their face. Otherwise, maybe you're the soft one.
On the other hand, if you say his style has always been soft compared to a Duckett or Bus type, you'd be right. Shaun has always been closer to a slicer or dancer than a mauler. Got to agree with those who said he's gone down hill, but I'm not writing his career off until I can see what he might do behind a better o-line. Nobody runs to their capability when the defense is in the back field too quickly.
Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteJennings didn't get beat like a rug this year. He played well, he played consistent, and he showed a lot of improvement over his rookie year. He was able to go out there and get the job done and held his own against some pretty good receivers. He made some nice pass deflections, including one I were he broke on a hitch route and made a tough play to bat the ball away on what could have been a big completion in a crucial point in the game, despite having just returned after hurting his ankle.
And Tru DEFINITELY didn't get beat like a rug for most of his career. Tru has been a solid corner ever since he was drafted. Interceptions are not the only measure of a CB's skills. Tru has always been a solid, all-around player. He has been commended by the coaches in past years for his play, and Ruskell said himself that last year was NOT a fluke, he has always been a good corner.

Walt/Hutch had more to do with Shaun's MVP than Shaun did. He's not the reason he won it. It was his blocking. Yes, he did a good job that year (contract year) but he was overrated b/c of the run blocking in front on him. I know he scored a million TDs in '05, but we all know it was the blocking that inflated his stats (and his desire to score TDs and try harder from a yard out than he would otherwise try from anywhere else on the field).
ReplyDeleteI also agree Jennings did well even though he didn't have a pick.
Tru has always been decent. However, I think our we all expected more from him since he was such a high pick. He hasn't become a Champ Bailey, but he has always been above average and really played well this past year. To say he is bad is just plain dumb.
bk
Jennings was picked on against good receivers. He is potential that hopefully will get big enough to play up.
ReplyDeleteTrufant was a big draft pick that is not a shut down corner. He is not one of the top or maybe even ten corners in the league.
And yes. He was beaten all the time early. Until this last year he was about as close to being a bust as you can be for a #11 pick.
Does that mean he can't turn a corner? No. He has not played up to expectations or potential until last year.
Yes. They both were beaten like rugs. And it is not a coincidence that having good safety's saved Trufant.
I did a search for "Shaun Alexander soft" and some fun things came up. This is the best one liner quote I saw.
ReplyDelete"Shaun Alexander, yeah he's soft. I've seen bongs take harder hits and remain upright."
Thats some funny stuff right there. Oh if it just wern't true.
~GnarlyHawk
i hsve said it before if you are going to knock someones opinion at least have the balls to put your name to it!
ReplyDeleteon that note, go back and watch the washington playoff game. if shuan hadnt been trying to find a place to avoid a hit there would not have been a replay. i don't care how sorry your line is you don't give up and lay down to take a nap. he was a good back behind a great line and even greater fullback. now he is a sad shell of his former self. if you dont believe me look at game highlights from 05/07 its sad.
It will be nice when people dont have to defend or bash SA. A decision or new news will be nice, I wish there was a productive conversation that people could be so passionate about. Still glad I stumbled across this blog and am happy that Seahawk fans are alive and well. GO HAWKS!!!
