First off, I hate the Raiders. Always have, always will. The first time I went to a Chargers game, it was against the Raiders and I almost got stabbed...seriously. That doesn't even mention the long standing rivalry from the old AFC West.
Well, once again, it appears that the Raiders will be making the Seahawks pay. Instead of Bo Jackson running over the Boz, now it will be in the wallet. Chris Mortensen is reporting that Al Davis is set to hand DeAngelo Hall 70 mil for 7 years.
This most certainly affects the Marcus Trufant negotiations. How much is hard to tell. From the little nuggets of info that have come out, it appears Tim Ruskell is serious about not giving Trufant top corner money. This seems unlikely to change. However, it has to be pretty clear to Marcus that he would get that money on the open market. So that puts the parties at an impasse.
Folks, it may be time to start preparing ourselves for the final year of Marcus Trufant as a Seahawk. Unless either party changes their philosophical view, I have to imagine the one year tender is all Tru will play under. Would the team trade him? It certainly remains a possibility. We won't know till draft day probably. Either way, the more corners that get paid, the worse it gets for the Seahawks chances at reaching a long term deal with Marcus Trufant.

Nnamdi Asomugha has to be pissed. I can't imagine that locker room staying together through the 10th game of the season.
ReplyDeleteAs far as Trufant, lets see him produce at last years level for another season before writing him a big contract. We all know a good pass rush makes the secondary look that much better. Trufant's success, may not be all Trufant in my opinion.
~GnarlyHawk
First of all Al Davis has officially lost his mind. Second, if the we are truly dead locked with Tru then it is time to seriously consider a trade. Letting him walk after this year without getting something for him would be a waste. He isn't going to get any cheaper. However, getting only a 2nd and a 6th for him would be hard to swallow but it is better then nothing.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the Giants will trade Boss and a second rounder. That would be fine by me. With the CB FA market depleted, it would suck to go into the season with our current stable of CBs.

ReplyDeleteI admire anyone who also hates the Raiders. I hate the Raiders, past, present, and future, as well.
ReplyDeleteIt was awesome watching SA go for 266 against them in Husky Stadium. There were Raider fans there. They were not happy. I was happy.
:)
We need to lock up Tru, especially if we are freeing up SA's huge contract in the coming days. They need to find a way to make it happen. Eventually, I could see Walter's money going towards Lofa and others' new contracts. Right now, we need to pay Tru. We need to keep our window of opportunity open for more than next year.
Also, Boss and a 2nd rounder for Tru? Put down the crack pipe. Do you work for NYG? Insane.
ReplyDeleteMan... How about Al Davis for jackass of the day again?? What about (if we can't work a deal with Tru) trading him for a 2nd and a 5th or 6th. Trade up with our 1st and the 5th or 6th to get one of the top 3 CB's and still make it out with another 2nd... I wouldn't love the deal but would be more than okay with it. Would allow us to pick up a project CB later in the draft and would give us another 2nd to lock up Keller and a solid RB, DL or OL. I could totally handle that. Plus we could save some cash that way. What are your thoughts?

I have a question for all of you folks on the board that has been nagging all through the post-season: Is Marcus Trufant as good as many people are making him out to be? Is he really a "shut-down" corner, who can be counted on to consistently take on the opposing team's best receivers and keep the ball out of their hands?
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that I'm not so sure. Last year we had an above-average pass rush, and a lot of below-average opponents. That combination tends to inflate the states of a defensive backfield.
Anyone have any insights that they want to share?
-TMann
Thats Al Davis for Jack ass Gm of the last 30 years..That organazation will forever go nowhere with him runnin the show there...A total IDIOT..
ReplyDeleteAnd I say we need to draft a corner this year and let Tru walk next year or trade him this year...Just cause of the Niners and Raiders payin stupid money to corners doesnt Tru deserves $10 mill a year...Im sure deep down inside Tru knows he isnt as good as these guys..But the market is constantly be raised by IDIOTS
They need to trade Tru to the Chiefs...Im sure hed have a lot of fun there not winnin
ReplyDeletetmann- I agree with you about Marcus. The Hawks play a cover 2 which does not require the CB to be locked man to man with the WR for the entire play. Basically Truf is responsible for the first 15 or so yards on the majority of plays. I don't see how we can pay him the $10 mil a year that true man-to-man CBs are getting paid.
ReplyDeleteThat said, if his production drops off a little this season (which is a great possibility)then we can possibly sign him long term for less.
Also there is no stipulation in his franchise tender that says the Hawks can't tag him again next year. I know that is unrealistic because of all the big time FA's that the Hawks will have next year. It is gonna be brutal to have Lofa, Hill, and Trufant as free agents. Ruskell needs to find a way to cut Shaun without making him a June 1 cut, simply to prevent his contract from taking up cap space next year.
I wouldn't mind seeing the Hawks locking up Tru for $8.5 mil a year simply to help the team out for next year. With all these CBs getting paid their price is only going to continue to go up, and if we could get a small hometown discount (signing for $8.5)I think the contract would look pretty good three years from now.
-Brady
I think we have a new (perpetual) AssClown..
ReplyDeleteIf we can't back load a $9.5-10M/yr contract that they'd agree to.. then trade Trufant
Giants have the 32 (31st) pick? I think that and Boss would be fair... if the Giants want to give us that, we take the best corner at25 and the best TE/RB/DE at 31. pay 1/5 the money for both of them over the next 5 years.
ReplyDeleteElgranderojo
First, I was under the impression that there was at least a semblence of a deal in the works with Trufant, which gave Trufant the bucks he wanted and the Hawks the caproom they required???
ReplyDeleteTrufant can be had by anybody who wants to pay him 9.5 mil a year PLUS give us 2 1st rounders, where's the long line??
I wouldn't take any player including Eli Manning of the Giants Roster.. but I would take the #31 pick this year and what I expect to be a top 20 pick next year when they fail to make the playoffs...
End of Rant

ReplyDeleteyoure forgetting one thing, he's a football player. Of course he thinks he's that good and worth MORE than the others on the field. Have you ever met a FB player. Even average college players think they'll make it to the league and make a name for themselves.

Ruskell has been quoted as saying that they want Trufant on the team. He said that he is a great corner, but not a shut-down corner, and that's why he isn't offering "shut-down corner" money to him. That's how the Seahawks see his value. There was a report that Ruskell offered Trufant a deal worth about $7 mil per year, before FA started. Not long after Samuel signed in Phily for $9.5 mil per year, Trufant and his representatives offered a proposal that would pay him $9 mil per year, a little less than Samuel. The deal was also back-loaded and reportedly would save the Hawks about $6 mil in cap space in '08. Of course, that means the cap hits are going to get pretty big in the ensuing years.
ReplyDeleteJust based off of reports I've read, the two sides are about $2 mil per year apart.
I agree that Trufant is not a shut-down corner, and should not be paid like one. However, I also agree with Ruskell that he is a great corner. What should a great corner be paid? Is Hall a shut-down corner or a great corner? Is Samual a shut-down corner or a great corner? I know those guys are two of the top CBs in the league, but are they that much better than Trufant? Are they shut-down corners? I don't know...
I like Tru, and I think he is a great player, and despite only 1 year of big plays, he's played SOLID his entire career. This guy is NOT a one year wonder. In addition, he plays great in our defensive system. I don't know how others feel, but I really think he would have more success on the Seahawks next year than either Hall or Samuel.
That's my two cents...darnit, I had a bad feeling that Al Davis was going to sign Hall for too much money. This totally takes away so much of the Seahawk's leverage. Son of a....

First off Al davis is Insane. And as much as i like Tru i support Ruskell not signing him to that kind of deal. I would hate to lose either hill or tatupu next year. The only hope seems to be if tru can somehow work out a "reasonable" deal for the hawks.
ReplyDeleteRuskell knows what he is willing to pay and is not going to change his mind. good or bad that is the way it is. That is why Josh is gone (good) and why Hutch is gone and Hackett.
ReplyDeleteHe is the one in charge so I will asume he knows what he is doing.
By the way J. Jones was a steal I will have to call that a plus on Timmy's resume but only time will tell
A trade may be the only option. If Tru is not signed by the draft it could happen. I would be surprised if the Giants would give up Boss and a 1st rounder. They all saw him play better then Shockey
Just another reason to hate the Raiders even more. Isn't Kaz a Raider now? Yeech...
ReplyDeleteI'm still hoping for a long-term deal to get done for Tru. He came into his own when Mora and the new safeties were brought in and Tru would continue to flourish if we can keep him.
Al Davis should be a HOF AssClown.
--JRuss
this is stupid - TR needs to get this done. if Tru commands $9M on the open market, then pay him $9M. Our pass defense is suspect enough with him - I don't want to go into the season without a top shelf corner like Tru.
ReplyDeleteREN
This idea that "the market has been set" for CBs is flawed to me. First of all,, it's pretty hard to compare CBs...there are so many other things besides their physical talent...like, the REST of the team they are playing on! So, we can debate on and on how good or not good Trufant is. He is what he is. Maybe performs better one year than another, but that can change in a second, based on injuries to him or the team. Second, just because SOMEONE else pays a player a certain exorbitant amount of money, doesn't mean we have to pay that amount. Look at your neighbors..they probably make less than you do, yet own 2 BMWs, have maid and lawn service, and have credit card debt up the ass. But they look good! Who says this is the best way to 'succeed'?
ReplyDeleteI say, pay exactly what you can afford to pay and pay what is "reasonable and customary" not what is headlines and idiotic.
Tezzer 21
DeAngelo Hall was never satisfied in Atlanta..he's a chronic complainer who has used poor judgement on several occasions regarding his buddy Mike Vick. Just imagine his tantrums in LA, where he'll be rich as hell, and as unsatisfied and unfulfilled as any real competitor can get. I will enjoy watching the teams who spread it out and pay all of their players, succeed. Can you say Giants?
ReplyDeleteTezzer 21
I would rather pay Nnamdi Asomugha 10 million a year then Tru. Have you seen this guy play, nobody throws the ball his way, he is a true shut down corner.
ReplyDeleteI've been saying all offseason (not post season) that if the Hawks don't lock up Trufant with a long-term reasonable deal prior to the draft, the first pick is likely to be a CB and Tru will play his last year in Seattle.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I still think Trufant wants to stay in Seattle and will make this thing work.
I totally agree with GnarlyHawk. what's up harley? Trufants sucess in this system is because of the linebackers, and D-line. I mean look at how he gets beat down field by larger faster Wideouts in the league. If you put Tru against the top receiver in the league ie...Moss, or even Andre Johnson etc... in a one on one sttus he will get beat a majority of the time. In the cover two defense wich is the most commonly used in seattle and the rest of the league for that matter... He will do great! However, he still needs a supporting cast! I say they play the home town card on Trufant to get some leverage with the deal and forget about how much Hall got or Samuels got. Move forward already Ruskell
ReplyDeleteI dont like the thought of paying anyone 9-10 million a year, there are a lot of role players and difference makers we could sign with that kind of money, shop him and get the best package of draft picks we can get... we can sign a above average corner with very little cap hit, and take the field with young corners, and let the veteran safeties help out. and get extra draft picks out of the deal. so i say trade him now, dont give anyone 10 mill a year!
ReplyDeleteknutson_11
So some of you are willing to over pay Tru, even though next year the heart and soul of the Defence will be a free agent? Sure going to suck watching Tru get payed all that money, and have Lofa playing middle linebacker for the Bears!
ReplyDeleteDoes any one agree that the addition of Grant and Russel helped Tru out? Four of his picks last year I could have made, and I'm almost 50!
This team can't afford another contract like SA's, they have guys that need to be paid next year, and wrapping up Tru who is good, but not Great would cause them to be pretty close to the same position they are in this year.
I say get what you can for him on draft day and let him go...
Al Davis needs to get comfortable as an ass clown on this site especially if he keeps giving out contracts like this.
ReplyDeletejustin
We may have to let Tru go. Unless he can give a cap friendly contract within the appropriate pay established by FO, we should get what we can for him prior to draft day.
ReplyDeleteHow many times can anyone remember a free agent CB living up to the exaggerated contract they end up signing with a new team? It just doesn't happen anymore because the defensive system is typically what make the corners look better than they are once they change systems. Very few CBs are shut down corners that can play in any defense and still excel. Remember, our defense may change philosophy after Holmgren leaves and Mora changes the coaching staffs.
I would be all for trading Tru for a couple of firsts or a first (or a high second) and very good player that would start for us immediately.
Maybe crazy man Davis would trade us Asomungha and a 2nd for Tru and our second - we move up in #2
AND we get a true man-to-man shut down corner.
This doesn't worry me. It probably means that we won't get deal done, but if that is true the worst case scenario is that we throw the cash Trufant wants us to throw at him, at Asomugha next year; and I would rather have Asomugha.
ReplyDeleteOr maybe we get a rookie for cheap? Or maybe Mora can do this year to Wilson, what he did last year to Trufant, and then we will have no need to sign a corner at
10+ mil per year.
-Griffin
I hate to see him go, but trade Tru. Lofa's much more important in the grand scheme of things, he's more than given it his all on every play, and who would hurt us more playing for someone else -- Trufant, or Lofa?
