Receiver Rearrangement?

by: Mike Parker

Something caught my attention just now in this post by Danny O'Neil, in which a New York-area fan of the Hawks recapped a few things while at the game on Sunday.

He suggests that McMullen isn't as bad as he seemed, and was getting "absolutely mugged" by the Giants' Aaron Ross throughout the entire game with no interference calls. Keary Colbert, on the other hand, dropped "at least" two passes (I only recall seeing one) and the reader thinks we should definitely cut him for his lack of production thus far. And with Deion Branch piling up his 154th injury in 20 games, it could be time to do the previously-unthinkable and cut the former Super Bowl MVP. (It seriously looks weird to even type that.)

This guy's observations made me realize just how badly this Seahawks team misses Nate Burleson and D.J. Hackett. Hell, by now it misses Darrell Jackson and Jerheme Urban, too, but I'm not thinking about that because we at least brought back Koren, if for nothing else but nostalgia's sake so far. (Early reports are saying Koren could be back on the field Sunday against the Pack, though.)

There are obviously a slew of problems that Tim Ruskell and Mike Holmgren need to address at this point, but remember last year when Engram took over for Branch at flanker? Engram set a franchise for receptions at 94 and was easily Matt's most reliable target. Branch being potentially out again might not be a bad thing as long as this rotation repeats itself. The team needs it.

So what now? What does everyone think about the receiver arrangement we're using for the moment, and what could possibly be done to make it better? A trade, perhaps? But then the problem arises of learning a very complex offense in the middle of the season . . .

On a side note, someone in the comments here mentioned this earlier as well: Why not give C.J. Wallace and Kevin Hobbs a shot at starting in the secondary? Hobbs is a quick CB who plays excellent, physical defense, and Wallace rightfully earned his spot on the roster as well. With Jennings and Wilson regressing this year, what could benching them for a game possibly hurt? We certainly wouldn't be giving up any more big plays than we already have. -END-
