Holmgren Presser at Noon

by: Michael Steffes

Get your coverage right here. I will do an updating highlights post during the presser. Time to get ready for the Giants. Hooooooooooboy! To see the highlights....

  • Holmgren says that everyone should be practicing today, including Morris. He has to see how the players practice and how they feel at the end of the week before deciding who plays.
  • He told the team that the season starts all over this week, and the team needs to play better.
  • He called Bobby the soul of the team over the last few years. His rapport with Matt is what makes him so critical, along with being an upbeat guy in the locker room and a team leader.
  • For the game, they normally would have 5 active receivers. They are going to hold off on making a roster move until they see how everyone practices.
  • I couldn't hear the question clearly, but I think it was about Billy McMullen (or maybe Bumpus?). Coach said he made some big plays when he wasn't even expected to play. He hasn't done anything to suggest that he won't be part of the mix going forward.
  • Coach thinks we have improved each week. The Giants are a good football team and he expects this week to be a big test for the Hawks.
  • Holmgren said that he has learned a lot about the team's backs and line and is very pleased, but with healthy wide receivers his personality means there exists the temptation to throw more.
  • Morris coming back will likely take some snaps away from Duckett as a halfback.
  • This being Bobby and Deion's first game back, "to expect Star Wars out there" isn't fair. It will take them some time to get back into top form.
  • Coach senses that the players are coming back refreshed, which is a good thing because he is emphasizing that they are starting over again.
  • Holmgren shared his memories of Giants stadium, saying it is loud and a tough place to play, but he most remembers a strike game he played there in (89?). He said they ran the wishbone in a game against Parcells. He said he could hear individuals shouting obscenities at him, which is unusual, because the stands were so empty.
  • He said the team will makes changes to lighten the practice load on players as the season goes on. Not because the bye was so early but because it is a long and grueling season
  • He said the struggles on the east coast have nothing to do with disrupting sleep patterns or their seats on the airplane. You lose because you play lousy, and the rest is just noise. The team stays in the best hotels, eats the best food, etc. They just need to play better.
  • Part of the WR decision-making is the punt return duties. He mentioned that Bumpus is the punt returner, but both Seneca and Bobby can return punts.
