Randy Moss Helping the Seahawks

I thought that would change the very polarizing Shaun Alexander topic by posing this question. Does the Patriots failure to sign Randy Moss help the Seahawks?

For more information.....

I say yes. When free agency started on Thursday night, the hot receiver was Bernard Berrian. He received a six 42 million dollar deal, w/ 16 guaranteed. That is 5 mil above DB money. Why was he the hot the receiver? Well probably because most teams made an errant assumption that Randy Moss back to the Pats was a done deal. Now, with numerous receivers such as Berrian, Stallworth, Porter, Wilford, and even Kerry Colbert cashing in, it would appear that needy teams have filled their WR needs. With suitors thinning out, it is becoming increasingly possible that Moss will leave New England. If you have money (Tampa Bay/Chicago) and you need a receiver, who are you targeting Randy Moss or DJ Hackett? I think that a general manager is obligated at this point to kick the tires on Randy Moss.

Where does this leave DJ Hackett? Well, losing Randy Moss makes New England a team in need of WR's, however they did waste a 2nd on Chad Jackson two years ago. They still have Welker. Gaffney, who has been there for two years now remains unsigned. I don't get the feeling they would break the bank for oft injured wideout Hackett. So where can he go where the pastures are greener? I am having a hard time finding a landing spot that seems plausible. I really think that he comes back for a 1 or 2 year deal. It allows the young guys to be groomed as replacements for Bobby who is a free agent and conceivably retire next year. It allows for more continuity on offense with the chance that next year the team could more likely continue with out missing a beat. That is the goal isn't it, sustained success.

If the Hawks ink Crumpler, which I think will happen by tomorrow afternoon, that fills one of the two biggest needs. Resigning Hackett would ensure an effective air attack in 08'. The question would be a ground game. If the Hawks have to clear cap space to get both deals done, wouldn't it be worth it even if the team had to reach or trade up to get a back they liked. It would still leave numerous picks to take the best available player. I think so. Obviously a DT would need to be picked as well, so the first two rounds could be looked at as either a DT or RB. If one of the big three falls, take him and go DT in the 2nd. If all the 1st round backs are gone, go DT and take a 2nd round RB. Maybe even take a RB in the 7th too, that creates competition.
It is certainly a lot to chew on, so please discuss.

UPDATE---Two things I failed to mention in my original diatribe, Javon Walker is also available and supposedly 10 teams are interested. He appears to be the favorite for teams looking at perpetually hurt wideouts. Also, the Skins still haven't spent any money, so that remains a possibility.
