Chris Mortensen, when talking about the Hawks game, reported that what kept Matthew out of the preseason was a bulging disc in his back.
Mort has been known to say a thing or two that is a bit overly dramatic, but in this case we have no idea. He says that a cortisone injection solved the disc problem. This is consistent with the information I found. Wisegeek.com says...Treatment for a bulging disk or even a herniated disk is relatively conservative in most cases. Rest and lifting restrictions are common, and a doctor may recommend a combination of heat and ice therapy and anti-inflammatory medications or cortisone injections. Medication may be prescribed to deal with any associated pain.
It also says that a bulging disc is something that happens over time and is not a result of a specific trauma or injury. However, the bulging disc may be more susceptible to being herniated, which is the term used when a disc is injured from a specific trauma.
What does this mean? It means it is a good thing that Walt has been feeling good this preseason, because we want to keep helmets and shoulder pads out of the small of Matt's back for another week or two.
UPDATE: Jay Glazer received a text message from Matt saying he is 100% ~END~
