Holmgren's Press Conference

by: Michael Steffes

Here are quick notes from Mike Holmgren's Wed Press Conference. As you can imagine, there is a lot to talk about. I will be updating this throughout the press conference for those who work and can't watch it at Seahawks.com.

To See the Highlights...

  • Holmy says people shouldn't be so surprised by the moves. This team has always done what it needs to improve the football team as they go.

  • Billy McMullen is familiar with the system. For Sammy, everything is brand new.
  • There will be 4 healthy wide receivers for the game. Practice this week will determine how they are used.
  • Forsett and Kent are described as young players with an upside, but they felt the team needed some guys who could do things right now. He said they did some things in the preseason, but when the lights come on it is not the same. They are hoping they can keep them around on the practice squad.
  • Chop will get first crack at right guard
  • On Plack....he says he had a bad game and punting and kicking in this league is fairly tenuous. There are guys waiting for jobs. He thinks Plack will end up kicking in the league somewhere, and maybe back with Seahawks. Coach said Ryan is consistent and had a really good workout here.
  • Seneca will be working out more at wide reciever. How they decide to use him will depend on how things work out with the new guys. He may also return punts, but Holmgren isn't making that decision till Saturday night.
  • There is a chance the team will still make more moves this week. He said everybody stay on your toes.
  • Coach feels confident that he can use Logan Payne at any of the positions. He and Courtney are able to play all the positions.
  • He expects to get Locklear back next week, but it is possible he will be ready. He said they would probably get a linemen from the practice squad and then put another guy on the practice squad. Simply to have enough numbers to practice with two full lines.
  • Coach says no outside the building cares about our injuries. They have their own. Luckily the defense is intact and they are just going about their business. Offense we just have to play. No excuses. Go out an play.
  • Holmgren thinks the Niners look improved. He was watching the defense. He said they look very fast. And it will be a challenge, as it always is.
  • We need to pressure the quarterback, because a young guy is more prone to make mistakes. When we don't pressure the quarterback, the outcome hasn't been very good for this team.
  • They did talk about Koren Robinson, but he was one of 30 names talked about. There is some logic to it. Asked if he wanted Koren back.... Coach said he would take the reporter on right now if he could play WR. But being serious, any player with a history like that, if they could help the team in a position like this, they talk about it. And they did.
  • He expects Courtney Taylor to start this week. He says he is a resilient young man.
  • Coach says it is one game. He is fine. Lets off on the doom and gloom. This team has faced adversity before. It is one game. He said they still have their quarterbacks walking around, and the defense which they were counting on anyway to hold us together until after the bye week anyway is still intact. Holmgren supposes he has been in WORSE situations than this.
  • He expects to have Bobby and Deion after the bye. "According to the medical people. But we are not going to go into a shell, we have to play. We have to win games." That is how they look at it, and he is sure that is how management and ownership are looking at it.
  • He says the Cards, Niners and Rams are on the rise. And even though this division has been maligned, he thinks it is getting tougher. All of the defenses are movement defenses and tough to play against.
