Two Kickers to Stay

by: Michael Steffes

If you haven't seen this yet, Clare Farnsworth has an interesting post up. He is talking about the befuddling moves made in recent days, considering that the team is keeping two kickers.

Guess what? Two kickers appears here to stay. The team really likes Brandon "the angry cabbage patch kid" Coutu. They didn't intend to keep Mare, but he won the job fair and square. Clare says....

I even talked to club president Tim Ruskell about this. They have yet to release Coutu, and sign him to the practice squad, because they do not want to lose him. Coutu is the future at the position.
So where does this leave Justin Forsett? Well, it seems obvious, that management doesn't see him as the future at his position, which is why they were willing to lose him. That are probably right. Forsett projects as more of a third down, time share type back. These players are easily found. Clare adds...
The fact that Forsett was the one dangled for the rest of the league to have a shot at – one the Colts took – also indicates that the coaches and some in the personnel department weren't quite as high on the multi-faceted back from Cal as the fans and his teammates.
If Forsett turns out to be a stud, then they will be forced to re-examine their evaluation of him, however for now, they wanted Coutu more. Lets remember, he was pretty good in the preseason too, and with Mare's injury history, this is a calculated risk that he will be needed sooner. Also, it seems good kickers are harder to find. Look at all the shuffling that has gone on around the league already this year. Only time will tell if this was a smart move or not. ~END~
