Because the Lions hold the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft they are free to negotiate with any and all draft picks they might see fit for drafting with said pick. According to the usual suspects, the Lions are in negotiations now with either one or a number of potential picks.
Pro Football Talk then followed up with a pretty sizable rumor: the likely pick? Sanchez. They state very clearly that this is merely a rumor and -- let's be honest -- it should be. I think there is very little chance that the Lions would take Sanchez #1 overall, but it is worth reporting.
The fact that the Lions are negotiating is not a shock and does not mean that anything will be decided or announced anytime soon. Nonetheless, it is interesting and worth following.
[UPDATE: Now they're reporting that KFFL is reporting (heh) that the Lions have "already decided" on Jason Smith. If this is the case, it is very likely that Stafford will drop to the Seahawks at pick four. It might also force the Rams to take a long hard look at Stafford with the #2 overall pick. While Bulger is the franchise QB, he is 31 years old and coming off two atrocious seasons. In the same way that the Hawks have to look long and hard at him, how could the Rams not do the same?]
