A recent Mike Sando article discusses how T.J. Houshmandzadeh fits into Seattle's offense. Within the article, Sando talks with Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. about the move and has him explain how he thinks Houshmandzadeh will affect the Seahawk's offense. Sando writes:
T.J. Houshmandzadeh gives the Seahawks a third starting-caliber receiver, with a fourth -- Bobby Engram -- still available as an unrestricted free agent if the team seeks more depth.
Matt Williamson talks about how Houshmandzadeh will help Seattle:
He fits the West Coast offense well. You'll see quick-timing routes. He catches everything. He catches the ball away from his frame, uses his body well. He is more quick than fast, but he does a nice job on those short-to-intermediate timing routes that the West Coast offense thrives on. It's a good fit.
It's a good read and gives some good insight into how this deal will give Seattle what it sorely lacked the last few seasons besides healthy receivers. It is expected that defensive coordinators will try to take T.J. away from Seattle's offense, thereby opening up the game for Branch, Burleson, and Carlson to exploit the defense. All three players should be licking their chops over this move as it should certainly bolster their games and give them more room in which to operate.
If Seattle now takes the next step and builds an offensive line capable of both opening holes for the running game to balance the offense and protecting Hasselbeck and giving him time to find our receivers, there's no reason Seattle can't climb back into the top ten offenses again this season. With our defense performing more like we expected of them with the level of talent present, Seattle's chances of storming back to take the West away from the Cardinals may have taken a major step in the right direction with this signing.
